David, I'm certainly glad that you don't have any pull or influence with the good folks at Bonneville. And I really don't believe that they have invested back into this market just to take a beating. Sure, we're a small niche group of listeners - but, the difference in us - is that we are Very Loyal listeners. When commercial breaks are played, we don't automatically switch to another station. Truth be told, I haven't changed frequencies since The Sound's start-up and really don't plan too. I hope they add lots of sponsors and get the support to make this a stand-out station. The smart ad buyers will be investing in this station as their messages will
actually be heard, which will in turn make our 1 share to them worth several times more than that of the other guys.
Very good points. A loyal, engaged audience would have to be more attractive to an advertiser. And certainly the demo AAA attracts is probably desirable. Not too young, not too old, disposable income. You'd also have a good percentage of industry listeners - just the people you'd want to have hear your song and plonk it on a movie soundtrack or TV show. That has certainly happened with KCRW.
I know there will be some response along the lines of "PPM doesn't care about loyalty, you're just building cume, bla, bla." But logically I'd certainly prefer to advertise on a station where the listeners tune in through the breaks, and tune in religiously. As opposed to a K-Earth, Jack, or KLOS style jukebox that people pop in and out of.
Regarding Dave Morey, he is
great. I tune his 10@10 in online even though the sound quality is sketchy. That show is the approach I hope The Sound takes to the music: not "AAA" necessarily, but free-ranging and creative. A music-lover's station. He's not afraid to play the Village People next to Little Feat. He avoids boring songs. (AAA loves to play boring songs, I'm sad to say.) Some kind of special features like 10@10 would get me to tune in. Maybe just import the show!
For the morning, having a friendly, intelligent, non-shock morning show would attract a lot of listeners who have outgrown/are tired of the morning screamers. Morey himself would be good, though I'd hate to see him change his show for us - it's so San Fran based. It would be great to have someone with Morey's musical knowledge, and with a longtime knowledge of Los Angeles, on the air.
