Mimi Chen joins The Sound tonight

Sorry guys, I was getting distracted because I just filled the car up at the very dismal pump...aaargh!

This thread is interesting as it started out about Mimi Chen joining the Sound. Lots of positive feelings, and then....like every other thread it spiraled into the usual "nobody is ever satisfied" type of thread with post after post heaping negatives about how the station isn't living up to the posters expectations. It's a AAA format, but for some not AAA enough, for others it's not familiar enough. Many think that is should sound like KSCA or 103.1, but they were failures. Yes I know those were considered marginal signals and that didn't help, but the ethnic make up of the market didn't help either. So then, why did Bonneville go AAA? I'm thinking that they felt that in the PPM world a rock format had a chance and I give them credit for not duplicating a format already on the air. I will say that I'm a little disappointed with some of the air staff hires. I for one feel that Mimi should be full time, and like others on these boards I have a friend or two who would sound great on the Sound, but weren't considered by Mr. Beasing. I think that his APD may be influencing staff decisions too and I expect KFOG people to be added to the staff soon if not already. That's too bad because there are some fine people who are local and would be great there. Unlike MOVIN who seemed to be dead from the start, and it was obvious to most, I really think we need to give the Sound more time before we declare it a failure. Still after seeing the pre-pre-pre PPM results it could be an uphill climb for KSWD. Okay, I've said my piece, now I'm off to the SF board to read about how disappointed people are with KFRC-FM again, ha!

Definitely the economics are tough when it comes to radio. And it's easy for us listeners to be critical from the safety of our armchairs. If it were our own mortgages or careers at stake, we'd probably be very hesitant to take risks.

As for oil and the economy, we might as well develop a new way of moving around the planet anyway. There is only so much oil on the earth. Humans are pretty resourceful, and I'm sure we'll have electric, solar, wind...who knows what kinds of energy sources. Maybe Americans will stop being so gluttonous and wasteful after this.

To get back on topic, I'm going to have to say that it isn't just the "radio geeks" who are bored by radio. I know plenty of ordinary folks who stopped listening ten or fifteen years ago when the playlists really started shrinking. I don't think radio people are in touch with enough "normal" people to realize what people are thinking. Some of them seem to me like the band on the Titanic that continues to play, oblivious, while the sink ships into the sea.

Radio would be wise to look at newspapers (particularly the LA Times) for a cautionary tale about what happens when you become irrelevant. (Or controlled by greedy corporations.)

As for the "tortoise and the hare" that is so right on. If people are loyal to the station, and they're connected to the jocks, and they "trust" it, they will stick with it. If a "burnt" song comes on, or a song they don't like, they'll stick through it, because they know a good song is on its way. You can be sure I'd sit through "Once In A Lifetime" if I knew that a few songs later I might hear "Zimbra," the acoustic Psycho Killer, or "Pulled Up." Similarly, I'll sit through Red Hot Chili Peppers if I know a few songs later I'm gonna hear King Crimson.

Meanwhile across town, somebody is sitting through King Crimson, and gets jazzed when Red Hot Chili Peppers come on. (Poor guy has no taste, but what can you do.;)

And most importantly, there's a third guy who hears King Crimson and says "WHAT IS THAT? I LOVE IT!"

But if ALL the songs are mass appeal, familiar, and inoffensive, then you quickly learn "there's nothing to see here," and you move on.

Anyway, good luck to the Sound. If it gets interesting I'll start listening again. Until then it's Indie, Pandora, MySpace, and XM for me.... (Like everybody else.)

Cheers!

The last "old music" station to really make a mark in town was JACK. Why? It was something different, novel, and exciting. It broke the mold.

The Sound will need to be special IN SOME WAY in order for it to, well, be special! :)

(Hint: Playing The Eagles is not it.)

I'm still hoping Meems could get the full-time slot...I was enjoying Meems on Mon night (While Mike Powers was Honeymooning... ::)) and I still believe she fits 'just right' at night... The postings show we all love The Sound, but some feel is not AAA enough, while others feel differently. It shows we want 'The Sound' to succeed where others have failed. I can't wait for the next 'Sound Session' - Peace JG
