Mix 102-9 purse promotion

I thought this had to be the most silly giveaway ever...and then I get a mailer today saying that they're doing it AGAIN for the spring. Here's the story, from their mailer:

"Every weekday at 7AM we restock our inventory of high-end designer handbags...tune your radio at work to Mix 102.9...listen at 9:15, 2:15 and 5:15 for your cue to call. Be the 20th caller and Pick your Purse."

For one, PURSES? C'mon. Talk about a cheap, throwaway kinda giveaway...probably traded out for Sam Moon spots. Second, who's going to answer the phone? I thought the daytime schedule was all voicetracked now. Third, suppose this is yet another one of CC's NATIONAL contests, with 'up to ONE purse given away to one lucky nationwide caller'?!? Fourth, does Mix really cater that strongly to women that men are completely alienated from an ongoing contest? Maybe it's just me, but this is just plain WEIRD. Perhaps The Ticket or Live 105 can use the same basic idea and give away Just For Men or wallets or jock itch cream.

Mike, check out this link.

You'll find, 3,4, even 5 HUNDRED dollar purses. Sam Moon might be carrying the knock offs, but I doubt their carrying the real thing.

So even going with the low end, they're giving away somewhere around a thousand dollars a day in purses. Even if they're not paying full retail (although they probably are, a lot of companies like Kate Spade, etc don't really 'discount' their merchandise) that's still a significant chunk of change, no?

And yes, KDMX caters that strongly to women. As I was pointing out to Bass over there>>>>
KVIL, KDMX, KLTY all skew heavily female. They're ALL competiting for the same basic pie.

And it's a piece of pie, (women) who might not spend 500 bucks on a designer purse (they'd probably buy the knock off at Sam Moon) but sure aren't going to say no to a free one.

But you also confessed over there that you don't care about anything but your precious 401K and Social Security. Leave Bass alone. He's doing something that he cares about.

First of all... Voicetracked? You must be thinking of KISS. Mix is live and local all day... Tony Zaza, Lisa Thomas & Rick O'Bryan. Second... this is not a national promo - it (like the on air talent) is local.

I agree Andy. Little 1's image is rusty at best. Purses for giveaways? Remember when it was weekend getaways, cars, dinners? Now Purses. What next? One pair of payless tennies? A pound of oven roasted turkey from oscar meyer?a dairy queen Blizzard with your choice of cookies or candy? My my cheap channel certainly is consistent with scraps.

KDMX ranks 18th 6a-7p (share). #6 Cume with M25-54 from the Winter survey, ahead of KLTY, KVIL, KJKK, KDBN, KPLX, KSCS ...

The Spring book is about to start so expect the promotions to start flying.

Clear Channel stock, used bubble gum, a wad of paper found on the street... Yup, all the worthless prizes you could ever want, and then some.

Andy

The purses are not cheap by any means. Personally, I could give a rat's about designer purses, but there are many women who thrive on that kind of thing. Remember, we are in Dallas where $30,000 millionaires thrive. ;)

LOVE that...describes many of the "instant gratification" generation people...all style, no substance.

I'm not a CC person, haven't toured the facility in a while, etc...but a story I heard recently (only handed down once, so not much opportunity for false embellishment, etc) had a client of CC's who insisted on touring the stations a couple of months ago just to see the DJs in action. The AE took them around, opened the control room door at Kiss, then at Mix, then at KZPS, then at the Edge...not a soul at any board in any studio, right smack in the middle of the day on a weekday. The AE then had to explain the art of voicetracking to his client, and that some shifts were handled by jocks 'hundreds of miles away from here.'

Sure, someone could have stepped out for a Coke or a smoke, but strange that no one was on duty in any studio they looked at. So you tell me...fluke or reality? If I have this all wrong, I apologize. But if it's me unveiling a trade secret, so be it. But I know on my last trip to CC, maybe four years ago when engineer Radi0chic took me on a tour there, it was the exact same thing...not a soul around in any studio, and this was around noon-1PM. So hearing such a story again is no surprise to me.

Mike,

You don't need to apologize. Shame on CC for voicetracking in market #5 on weekdays. It just confirms how little the company cares at doing anything other than turning a profit.

On a side note,

What baffles me is not so much that women carry handbags. It’s what they carry “in” the handbags. Let’s take makeup, for example. Until a few years ago, I had no idea what makeup was made of. But after hearing some makeup was made from animal fats, I started wondering “but don’t a lot of women avoid most animal products from the animal cruelty standpoint?” The really big shocker, at least for me, is that makeup contains toxins! Guys, think about that the next time you kiss a girl who has caked her face in makeup. You might end up getting a little lead in your system.

Which begs the other question, "Why would a radio station give away something women use to carry around so many potential toxins with?"

Andy

Because the female version of the 30K millionaire loves them. And if you're trying to draw in that audience, why not give away something they'd be interested in?

IIRC, KDMX is something like 70% female audience. They'll take the guys that don't like the Edge, aren't old enough for classic rock, etc, but their bread and butter is the 20 and 30 something female.

I hate stations who promote purse giveaways because it does nothing for people of my gender. Why would men want purses? LOL.
How about a collection of 1970s "Man Purses" to give away?!? Anyone remember those? Bet they fetch more money on Ebay these days than any Gucci bag. Personally, my bag looks ssssssimply ssssstunning, and is bright red (to match my eyes...) :-*

Tell ya what I'll do...one day when I just can't get enough Maroon 5, I'll listen to Mix at the proper times and call in to win myself a bag. I'll be sure to tell the automated operator that, "No, it's not for my girl, it's for ME." (Oh, and don't make it a white purse, or else I can't wear it past Labor Day.)

I am sure Little 1 has a set of stunning bags that he could spin all day on. With his/her 401 k in a few years he/she may need it to carry all their possesions. A suggested logo for Mix "Midol Music that won't cramp your style".

Sadly, there is alot of VT'ing going on at CC Dallas. Eagle, KZPS and KISS are all tracked in middays. KZPS, Eagle and Edge are also tracked at night. I am not sure whether Jen Austin on MIX is live or Memorex. ;)

HA!!!! We used to call those "Sit-n-Spin"s, circa 1975. I believe Woolco and Gibson's sold them for less than $10, not $57.99 as Amazon wants. Nothing like making the kiddoes dizzy...keeps them quiet while the "Blues Clues" DVD is resetting itself.
