MIX 1079 - BEST SOUNDING STATION IN COLUMBUS

I think what TJ Holland is doing with Mix is amazing! They sound A LOT more current (less 80s) and of course the imaging is always good. Jocks are good. I would love to hear some jingles but if they market it, I could see them pulling in some decent ratings. Good to hear stuff like:

Bad Romance
Two Is Better Than One
According To You

Not to mention, I requested Tik Tok by Ke$ha this morning and they played it 15 minutes later. If you like hit music, and you could use an occasional 80s song an hour without the annoying repitition of WNCI - choose Mix 1079!

Thoughts?

Don't think you'll be seeing ANY ratings for them, decent or not, since Saga is no longer an Arbitron subscriber.

Less 80's on Mix? Today I heard Lady Gaga sandwiched between Pour Some Sugar on Me and When Doves Cry. If you count 80's, 90's and the first half of the 00's I'd say they're playing at least as much gold as before, maybe more.

That is true that Pour Some Sugar On Me played at 4:56 and then Bad Romance kicked off the 5:00 hour. Then When Doves Cry... however, the next 80s track after that was at 6:23p and it was You Spin Me Round (Like A Record) - I think Prince also was one added in to sound good on Fri at 5pm

Well, since you think I'm so wrong. Who sounds the best?

That's a trick question jammin. Trying to figure out who sounds the best in this town is like trying to find a corner in a round room. It's like asking me to pick the hottest girl out of 20 ugly ones. It just can't be done.

They played When Doves Cry? 1 out of 3 ain't bad I guess. Seriously though, I can't listen to this station. Hot AC couldn't beat WNCI on a good signal so I'm not sure where the logic is of putting that format on a crappy one.

While it probably wouldn't be too popular among posters here, the kind of Hot AC that might have the best chance in Columbus  is a heavily gold-based one (especially with pop-rock), like CC's Premium Choice version.  It would be the most differentiated approach from what's already available in the market on AC & CHR.  It would actually make more sense for (and thus never be considered by) 93.3 than 107.9, since it would have more music overlap with Saga's SNY than with NCI.

That's a really good point, Matt. For how big Columbus is, you'd think the stations would be a lot better. Honestly, there are decent sounding stations in the city, but there is something wrong with all of them. I think no matter if you're Z100 New York or 700WLW, two rating powerhouses, something still isn't right. I think Mix 1079 could obviously use some work, but overall, you can tell that time is spent on it. The music is good! It's programmed to Columbus! There's a lot of songs they play that other Hot ACs don't even consider.

Think about this...

1. They are risky.

Their music mix, like I said before, is programmed to Columbus. Tony Florentino did a good job before he left. TJ Holland came in and I hear even more stuff added to the playlist than before.

2. Imaging

It's hard to find a station these days that actually has fun and upbet imaging. Although, I do like the old Mix 97.1's imaging better, this stuff isn't bad and a pretty decent carbon copy of it. Maybe if they add jingles, and more of the CHR-sounding stuff, they'll have it nailed down.

3. Generation NOW

Yes, they still do use the positioner, 80s, 90s, Now, but I think they are keeping up with the generation. Every DJ has a twitter and facebook and promotes their information along with the station's Mix Clique and such. I think they are doing a much better job wth promotion than the old Mix. Plus of course, the music is up to date.

I think they are starting to become more of a WNCI alternative. That's what I can appreciate. No, they don't have the signal or heritage, but I think besides the 80s, they have a better product. It's hard for a Hot AC to fail in any market, so I think Saga will hold on to Mix awhile. We can't see the ratings, but I think if they hit the streets, and keep doing a good job with the on-air sound, it'll be much better than Oldies.

Last 3 songs:

Gives You Hell/AAR
Let It Rock/Kevin Rudolf
According To You/Orianthi

Someone who is tired of WNCI playing Ke$ha once an hr, will flip to Mix and hear the hits PLUS sme throwbacks and maybe an 80 once an hr or so. Good work TJ Holland.

It's not a trick question in a town with a ton of crappy sounding signals. ;D

Premium Choice Hot AC is extremely current! They're just about as current as Mix 1079 if not more.

A post you made on another Radio-Info board indicates that you may be listening to CC's Alice in Fresno and assuming the music they are playing (which is indeed very current) is CC's Premium Choice Hot AC.  But Alice actually stopped using CC's original Premium Choice Hot AC long before that post.  (Fyi, there is a Premium Choice Mainstream AC in Fresno, KSOF, with music that is identical to Columbus’s WLZT most of the time).

The CC Premium Choice Hot AC format that I referred to is still on KGBY Sacramento and WSNE Providence.   And as you can see from the Sat 1-28 4pm Hour (local time) rundown below, it is indeed a gold-heavy version.  At least 7 of the 13 songs are 6+ years old (mostly 90’s plus two 80’s releases):

Goo Goo Dolls - Give A Little Bit
Colbie Caillat - Fallin' For You
New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle
John Mayer - No Such Thing
Jack Johnson - Upside Down
Lady Gaga - Paparazzi
Hootie & The Blowfish - Only Wanna Be With You
David Cook - Light On
O.A.R. - Shattered (Turn The Car Around)
Green Day - When I Come Around
Michael Buble - Haven't Met You Yet
Sophie B. Hawkins - Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover
The Black Crowes - Hard To Handle

For reasons I mentioned in my previous post, this is what would make the most sense for Columbus in terms of filling a hole, despite the fact that Alice-in-Fresno's extremely-current approach would probably be closer to the tastes of people who frequent this board.

This past week I heard "Let It Rock" on Mix 107.7/Dayton.
Mix 107.9 sounds a lot like Q102/Cincinnati music-wise. Q is more of an Adult CHR though.

Yeah, both Mix's play Let It Rock. Mix 1079 is surely becoming more of an adult CHR. It's becoming even more Adult CHR as TJ Holland works on it. This morning at 7:55 on 1079, I heard Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani. I heard Single Ladies by Beyonce yesterday. Smart move! Kudos to TJ. Last year, we were discussing how we hope Mix would get a little risky. Here we go!
