Mix 1079 into the New Year

Listening to Mix and seeing Kevin Rudolf/Lil Wayne - Let It Rock on RDS actually made me have hope that maybe the rap version was in! Nope, rapless, but still fun to hear it. Although, they just segued into Don't Mess With My Heart - pretty cool to hear as well.

The problem is.....

I remember listening to Mix going into last year hoping for some change after the New Year, and they did change positioners, but the music's pretty much similar. I'm asking myself, why am I not hearing Nelly's Just A Dream or Usher's DJ Got Us Fallin In Love? What about Ke$ha's We R Who We R or even better Tik Tok? You can catch a lot of these songs on Mix 1077 in Dayton and they're more 80s than ever!

Mix 1079 has a good format for Columbus, but it's a bad signal and it really could be programmed a little more younger. I'd go after the 18+ at this point, adding some more current tunes since the adult demos are pretty much being catered to with all of the other alternatives. Mix is probably preset 3, hopefully 2 with the adult women following WNCI, but I wouldn't be surprised if Gen X is beating Mix on presets... obviously with the numbers we're seeing.

Question 1) Would it hurt Mix to sound a little more current? Still safe, but current like WNCI years ago with Michael McCoy.
Question 2) Who really is calling the shots here? Is it TJ Holland because rumor has it, he's not even programming it. I mean, all the jocks except for Dantzer are VT'd and the music is the same day-to-day except for Billy Bush. It makes me wonder if Florentino would've stayed with Mix, would he have took Mix in a younger direction? ESPECIALLY with Rewind in the building....
Question 3) Will we see changes with Mix and if so, will it happen after the New Year? What should we expect?

Anyone wanna ponder? It's bugging me.... like the song they're playing now "Maybe" by Sick Puppies, as they say it best, "Maybe it's time to change." :D

It's not a bad signal - it is exactly as it is supposed to be. They are just trying to be something they are not, a Columbus station, when in fact it is a Delaware station.

Actually they are now licensed to Westerville.
A minor technicality - the transmitter site and signal remain the same.

They lowered the tower height and increased the power for a zero-sum gain. I'm still puzzled as to the rationale behind that. Were they ordered to do so?

Correct, however it goes without saying that one might have completed the COL change in hopes of one day moving the transmitter site closer to Columbus.

I doubt they'd be able to move closer to Columbus...wouldn't that cause interference with Dayton's WMMX/Mix 107.7, since they're so close on the dial?

If TJ Holland isn't programming it, who's "Minding the laptop on TJ's desk"?

That's a good question. Mix 107-9 is just so blah at times. You know you're going to be expecting songs everytime you tune in. They really need to work on it more and maybe back off only focusing on Rewind for a while because Rewind is sounding pretty amazing.

Oh yeah, BTW, I prefer the version of Kevin Rudolf's "Let It Rock" minus Lil' Wayne and his screechy voice. Talk about a musician I can't stand. That's the one that Mix 107.7 plays.

It wasn't so much that I prefer his version, more that I was excited when I saw his name on the RDS that maybe, just maybe, Mix was skewing a little hotter!

If mix 107.9 were to follow the hot ac charts they would sound alot better than they do now. I think they should sound more like either Cincys Q102, Baltimores Mix 106.5, Indianapolis's Z99.5 or Clevelands Q104. If they were to sound like one of those stations they would give WNCI a run for the money. Though it's signal will still be the downfall.

Too bad WBNS didn't think about doing it that way when they were Hot ac. They probably would've had good enough ratings to keep it on instead of switching to sports.

Before football season WBNS-FM's 12+ PPM AQH share was actually lower than both Gen-X and the Brew -- but higher than 93.3's of course. So we'll have to see what happens going into 2011. Even if it's a seasonal rise, it's got to be longer-lasting and more significant to the bottom line than 93.3's annual Christmas burp.

I doubt RadiOhio would ever flip The Fan now though. No matter how bad they fall off.
The chances are slim to none, and slim just left town.  IMHO, I think that the flip at 'BNS-FM had everything to do with running the station on the cheap than anything else(They can say it was all about folks wanting FM sports, but I don't buy that for a minute).  I was sad to see them flip.  They had just started to get it right when they went Sports.  Had Mix stuck around, once the PPM hit, I bet they could've given 'NCI a run for their money.  They definitely have the signal to compete, which is 107.9's downfall, no matter what music they spin.  I guess we'll never know...unless the Wolfe family would sell the station to someone who would put music back on 97.1.  Too bad I don't have a few mill sitting around...if I did, I GUARANTEE music would go back on 97.1...and Sports would go back to HD-2 and AM. Immediately.

On another tread they were talking about that me too format on 93.3. I told them that when cc moved that signal into Columbus they should have kept the format that it had. When it moved here it was calling itself Mix 93.3 which had a better variety than what WBNS had or what Mix 107.9 has. The only reason I think they even became that me to ac format is because of all the complaining that Saga did when cc started moving in signals closer to Columbus from other cities. Cc could have owned both the CHR and the Hot AC audience had they kept 93.3 Mix 93.3.
