Mix 94.1 and JYY: The "OHP" Dilemma

This drives me friggin' mad. Why the hell would direct competitors both play the same exact show, Open House Party, on the weekends. That, and WHY would SupeRadio allow two stations in the same market to air the show.

I think JYY has more problems then that. Especially there Morning Show- Jeanmarie has to be one of the WORST morning personalities in New Hampshire, maybe even the country.

I think Kane is a far more compelling air talent than John Garabedian at this point in John's career.

FWIW: WKSS and the semi overlap of WILI and it's 97.5 Bolton translator in Hartford, CT would air OHP on Sundays at the same time...
 
What makes her so bad in your opinion? I have never heard the show... Just curious.

Hmm. I dunno if I'd say that. Every break with Kane is "Oh I just did your mom!! WHAT SONG CAN I PLAY FOR YOU!!". John is older, but at LEAST IT IS A LIVE SHOW...kane...not so much.

Here is the thing that bothers me. Mix and JYY are in a dead heat 12+, and no one is making a move to captialize. Mix still considers themselves a HotAC, which they arent, and they think their competitor is WLNH, which it isnt. WLNH crushes them. They need to pay attention to their real competitor, and JYY needs to do the same.

I'm in New Britain, about 9 miles southwest of Hartford. I get a so-so signal of WILI-FM 98.3 ("I-98"). All I get on 97.5 FM is WALK-FM from Patchogue, NY (Long Island). If you go back a few years, you used to get the show on WKCI-FM 101.3 ("KC-101") of Hamden/New Haven, too.

Incidentally, while the town of Willimantic (actually a portion of Windham) and the municipality of Bolton are both in the Hartford market for TV, I don't think the same holds true for radio.

The JYY morning show can't be any worse than the MIX morning show. Though I have never heard it, I can't imagine they are actually WORSE than Fred Carusa and his co-host of the week. There's a reason he's been there 30 years...no one else would hire him!

Just boring and doesn't fit with JYY. Her co-host and all the listeners are peppy and she seems boring and just everything -- listen to the show.

I have known Fred for years. He has been offered many jobs, but he's loyal to his kids and family, also Jeff Fisher is great to work for, real good to his staff. The entire company, WSCY and WPNH staff have alot of longevity fom airstaff to sales.
 
Mix doesn't even come close to JYY in terms of quality. Music mix, jocks, imaging, promotions, JYY has them beat. Try listening to Mix for a day, then JYY for a day. There's just no comparison.
With the signal Mix has, they should have crushed JYY in the new Concord book. The only people that listen to Mix are the people that can't get JYY.

The only problem with JYY is their entire staff sounds exactly the same. JYY has hardly any signal in the Lakes Region.

How can direct competitors air the same syndicated shows live? Are they grandfathered in? Are they numb above the neck? What is it?

Well, apparently noone knows the answer. Maybe JYY positioned themselves as a Manchester station(which they're not!) and FTN as Laconia/Lakes Region. Just a guess. Also, maybe Superradio is easily swayed by large corporate radio, i.e. Nassau. I'm sure Superradio would love to get on Wpst, Work, etc. and other Nassau stations. Saying no to Nassau is a lot harder than saying no to Northeast(Mix 94.1).

On another note, when did JYY start carrying OHP? Last I knew they were doing that dance remix show that came on CD, can't remeber from where..brain cramp, which incidently, Mix also use to air the same dance remix show as well.

The reason I ask is because there is NO REASON JYY should be tied with Mix.

*MIX PLAYS WET SWEEPERS OVER SONGS*. Who DOES that?!

So, now, TheGuyInTheRadio presents the three ways JYY could kick Mix's Arbitron Ass in the next book:

1) Get more callers on the air.
Have you EVER heard a caller on JYY that wasnt a contest winner???

2) Make it a rule: No two DJ's should sound alike.
Mix has some iffy DJ's, but at least they have their own way about things. JYY, I heard "105.5 JYY" said with the same inflection every time...same liner at that time of the hour. I've never heard an improv.

3) For the love of God, don't voicetrack any shows other than weekend and late night.

JYY, with the corporate power behind them, should be LAYING MIX OUT...Mix is a station who considers themselves a Hot AC and thinks WLNH is their competitor. They have no direction other than "copy their direction". CMON!!! I wanna see an Arbitron bloodbath.

For a station that "considers itself a Hot AC" Mix sure plays a lot of urban/hip-hop stuff...even in mid-days. Don't know what they're thinking...the Lakes Region ain't exactly the 'hood.
