Mix 965 Houston

They need to do at least a revamp and make it a better Mix at least! From the 90’s until now like 104.3 My Fm L.A.
There's really no incentive to.

Poor 6+ ratings don't mean much if they're getting good ratings in their desired demographic (women 25-54) and it bills well. Plus, as David mentioned, cluster synergy strongly plays into it as well. A flip wouldn't make business sense.

KHMX could adjust the music to perform even better than 5th in the desired demographics mentioned earlier, but more '90s is unlikely to happen. That would start to cannibalize its sister KKHH, which plays about 2-3 '90s songs an hour.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that KBIG is part of a three station "Wall of Women" lineup of iHeart stations in Los Angeles (KIIS and KOST being the other two.) This allows KBIG a tighter musical focus on the middle section of the broader female demographic, while the other stations focus on younger/older listeners.

Imagine if KODA, KHMX and KRBE had common ownership, then you'd have the same dynamic here in Houston. But the three have separate owners, so the music on each wanders around a bit more to fit the existing overall ownership strategy.

If Audacy were to buy CHR KRBE, they could build their own "Wall of Women" with KRBE playing the KIIS role, KHMX as the KBIG equivalent, and a tweaked KKHH as a KOST clone. And Audacy would still have KLOL for young Hispanic demos.

Of course, what to do about KILT-FM. In my fantasy world, Audacy would cede the Country audience to Apollo/Cox and move SportsRadio 610 to 100.3 to shore up male demographics (FM sportstalk seems to do well in DFW for example, see KTCK-FM.) Continuing the fantasy, Cox buys KROI, pairs it in a simulcast with KTHT, and launches a new Country format of recurrent/older tunes, while KKBQ focuses on newer music (I am using KSCS and KPLX in DFW as a template for this.)

Fun to think of these sorts of things, but I am playing with other people's radio stations and other people's money.

Agencies usually and predominantly buy based on ratings, not share. And they buy on multi-book averages. They know that shares wobble around... a lot sometimes... and they are looking for consistent levels of listening, not the last book.

Using the last three books for averaging, there are Three stations, KLTN, KSBJ and KODA, that average a 0.4 rating in Women 25-54.

After that, there are 6 stations, KHMX, KKHH, KTBZ, KLOL, KRBE and KMJQ that have a 0.3 rating. There are 6 with a 0.2.

KHMX has occasionally been in the 0.4 group, but not often enough for a short term average to put it there.

Buys will establish ratings vs. price goals, and then decide on the individual stations based on a variety of other factors, including the client's specific targets and user profiles.

I just want mix 965 Houston to play a better mix of songs
If their research tells them that their current playlist is the best *fishing net to cast*, then that's what they'll play. It is not going to satisfy everyone, but it is going to catch as much if their target demographic as possible.

It seems you would be better off exploring the world of streaming where you can edit your own mix of music to your liking. Or find a station in another market and stream it.

The format seems fine -- I am certainly not in the target demo, but the playlist is comparable to just about any other Hot AC I've listened to...

What I find rather bizarre is the jock they have on Middays and morning traffic on the other Audacy stations -- she has an extremely thick accent to the point of being almost unintelligible... doesn't seem to fit well, but again, I'm not in the target demo...

Just a new revamped Mix will do, just include more songs and make it a better with throwbacks.
For "better with throwbacks", Mix may have to choose between getting listeners from places like Mission Bend or Missouri City, or from places like The Woodlands, Kingwood, or League City. Mix has been attempting to attract the latter by playing more country-pop tracks, whilst sprinkling more rhythmic tracks to attract a little of the former.

Mix 965 Houston said they are not going to play throwbacks
