MIX 98.5

Does anyone know how the management is at this place?Suppose there was someone who worked on the air at a Providence radio station for a year back in the 90's, but who has been out of the industry since, and now would like to get back in part-time. Would a station like Mix hire him?

Re: MIX 98.5...in trouble?

Mix has been doing poorly in the ratings from what I hear. It used to be one of the better stations in Boston but it seems like no one is listening to it anymore. The music doesn't sound bad but I did notice some needless talk. It seems like that should be a station that plays a lot of music. Just wondering if anyone thinks this station is in serious trouble. Is a shake up needed to turn things around?

its just going through the same fate as hot ac in other city's, l.a and sf come to mind

Hmmm interesting. That seems to be an easy excuse. There are many other Hot AC type stations that are doing very well across the country.

I've noticed that in the past week, they seem to have added more 80's and 90's songs to their playlist. Perhaps it was just the Memorial Day weekend, but I'd guess that if there is a change, they're trying to go after WMKK's most recent book that showed a nice uptick.Mix has been going down for around a year now, and it's time for some sort of change. This sounds ridiculous, but what about relaunching Mix as a current-intensive Jack? With less overhead and less talk, could they add some shares?

Yeah, there's a lot of that. I don't think anyone listens to WBMX for quality talk.

My take on Mix 98.5?When Star 93.7 went away, it appears that Mix made a strategic mistake. They figured they could inherit the old Star audience...and brought in the Star PD (McKenna) and some Star personalities (LAdy Di, Fast Freddy, etc.)The numbers have been going downhill ever since. It appears with every trend they are in worse and worse shape! Not only did they not benefit from any orpahned star listeners...but they lost a lot of their core listeners as well.If you look at the Star P1's and the old Mix P1's...I don't think they would fit together at a party....or even in the same waiting room.McKenna is not a seasoned programmer. He has little experience....and most of it from one format style. Lady Di, while a jock(ette) who has made a name for herself....probably isn't what the typical MIX listener is looking for. (I would say she is too closely associated with Star, Jamn and Kiss)And, most of all.....there is much too much TALK on that station. Greg Danials (a pretty good Jock), gabs, gabs, gabs! About too much of nothing! If they are going to be perosnality driven...their jocks need better content, etc.If they are going to be music intensive...they need to clamp down on the jocks a bit. (Kiss 108 has jocks, but they never get in the way of appearing to be playing a TON of music.)BAck to the origianl question....about what kind of company are they??? How long will it take for them to realize they are on the wrong track? The longer it takes, the worse the reputation.I remember a year or so ago....Greg Danials was #1 in Women, adults, etc.I believe the last trend had hiom 16th?(And in 22nd place in the isolated month.)Something is worng at this radio station.A little wear and tear on the format is expected from time to time...but from 1st place to 22nd? Just my $.02......your milage may vary.

I have to agree with most if not all of what you said. Also,I would love to know who listens to Lander in the morning because I find him so boring. In fact the people that surround him are that way too. I also believe I heard Lady Di on in the morning too. She is another voice that adds nothing to that show. Why is she on in the morning when she is also on in the evening. I heard she was doing very poorly in the ratings at night so it doesn't make sense to put her on another shift when she's not doing well in her primary time slot.I agree Greg Daniels is a decent enough jock but he babbles on and on and on and then you hear the traffic girl and they talk forever and then you hear fast freddie and he makes no sense on that station whatsoever and doesn't even sound like he fits it. The content should appeal to the type of people that listen to that station.I know this format has had a little trouble BUT not THIS much trouble. There are stations that are having success with it. It just seems like someone at the helm is missing the boat on what it takes to drive this station back up.

On the McKenna comments I think I remember even before he was PD at STAR the whole idea was to staff the station with personalities who were known in the market. It didn't work although known or not known you have to consider the format itself wasn't a winner. Jerry programmed HOT106 in Providence and really had nothing to work with when it came to staff. They still don't over there. Now he brought Diana Steele to MIX and I think that was a good move. She's really the only one on Lander's show that has a personality since the others are generic and are there because they play other roles like producer and weather. As far as Fast Freddie putting him on with Daniels makes no sense other than it seems some station has to have him on for some oddball reason. He fit on STAR. He's a turnoff anywhere else. MIX music sucks too. It has no focus and over the years every time they find some focus they end up losing it.As far as the original guy's original question I don't think it matters if you have one year experience in Providence or 5 somewhere else if your airchecks grabs the PD quickly. Problem may be that MIX has a ton of weekenders already.

In regards to Lander's show..is it mandatory for everyone who works with him to Kiss his...because the weather guy just agrees with everything he says. As far as Fast freddie being a turn off..he's a turnoff on Mix! When his annoying voice comes on I can only stand it for 2 seconds before I have to turn the dial.

Sadly DB, talent is not what it takes to get on MIX 985 these days. Frankie, Freddy and D are trying to get Frankie Foxx on the air doing traffic. She is part of the click and they along with Alicia (the spy in the morning) will do ANYTHING to make that happen, including dirty tricks if need be. Freddy is a glorified van driver who would be nowhere without Jerry being the boss. As far as ratings go, look at TIC in Hartford owned by the same company, same format. They have been going up in the ratings in the past year. So much for the format being to blame. Look at the difference between this year and last and refer to the last paragraph for your answer.

That's a little harsh. I think Lady D has been a nice addition to the morning show. I know the Star people have made an "invasion" of sorts of the station but not that much when you think of how long Lander and Erin and Daniels have been there. I happen to like Sue Brady on with Daniels as well. She is sweet and funny.

i think the station sounds great.... its prolly one of the only stations that have a full air staff even overnights and weekends... speakin of witch i listened last weekend and heard nothing about the "whatever weekend" and they sounded the same as they did all week... did they stop the whatever weekends?

Lady D is fine in moderation, but doing both mornings and nights is just too much!

If the "Star invasion" was bringing listeners to Mix, then there would be no issue. There's a reason why Star became Mike: it wasn't working! I can't think of any other PD who would try to bring back to life a station that simply failed. Star was a station with a lot of great, heritage personalities that fit the format, but Mix is a station that badly needs ratings that the personalities, which sound awkward talking up rock-based tracks, aren't delivering. If Foxx is indeed hired by McKenna, seems like we'll have "Star 98.5".Lander isn't exempt either; that show has become fairly stale in the past few months. And as another poster said, the music needs direction: one set, you'll hear tracks by artists like Coldplay and U2, thus mirroring a rock-based hot AC like WTMX/Chicago. Another set, you'll hear Shakira and Rihanna and you'll think that you're listening to Kiss. The Whatever Weekends at least provide an excuse for the variety, and don't honestly sound too bad... though I haven't decided whether it's because of the lack of Star personalities or not.

I don't see a problem with Lander playing whatever in the morning. He ALWAYS has done that. And sometimes he exposes people to music that they wouldn't normally hear. I know I have grown to like some hip hop music that I wouldn't have been exposed top otherwise.

I enjoy the variety on Lander as well, but a morning show should try to bring all elements of a station together, though contests, promotions, and music. There's nothing wrong with Lander playing a variety of music, but the station should follow through with his blend throughout the rest of the day, otherwise, you're just going to confuse the listeners like the musical segregation on WILD-FM. Then again, some of his choices like The Game's "Hate It or Love It" wouldn't exactly follow the typical definition of hot AC.

Ok so maybe The Game is a bit harsh lol but he tends to just play a snippet of that I think to keep people informed. The thing is Lander is allowed to play whatever he wants - too bad more DJs aren't allowed to really play requests or throw something unsual in once in awhile.
