MLK Mix Weekend

Dr. King also had a dream about us not being judged by the color of our skin. Has that come true for any of us?

I wish it were more true than it is. I prefer to judge people as individuals ... what they are doing with their lives, are they helping their families when needed, etc. This evening on ABC7 Eyewitness News (L.A.) one of their reports included a quick sound bite from a young Latino who said he had volunteered to work extra hours at his job so that his father could stay home while ICE is so focused on arresting people they "think" are criminals. My immediate thought was that he is a good son; my second thought was that I had more respect for him than I do for almost anyone in the current federal administration.

And I'm white. With Black friends, Latino friends, Jewish friends, you name it. By my standards, they are all good people and that is all that matters to me.

I fear the good Dr. King's dream is being turned into a nightmare these days and turning out exactly the opposite of what he had hoped for.

For some, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered that one line and that was his entire career.

Which is very unfortunate, IMHO. Dr. King was a very intelligent and thoughtful man. That he was largely ignored by the masses is a sad commentary on what people thought at the time.

I was one month away from my 12th birthday when he was assassinated and even at that age, I already understood that he was a remarkable human being.

I've visited the Civil Rights Museum twice in Memphis, and I learned alot about Dr. King that I'm sure many people don't know.

Besides fighting for equality, he was very big on helping the less fortunate. No matter their race.

With all due respect, let's keep our personal political opinions off of here. I don't know about anyone else, but one reason I participate in this group, is to escape all of that and interact with people who have the same interests as me.
