I wish it were more true than it is. I prefer to judge people as individuals ... what they are doing with their lives, are they helping their families when needed, etc. This evening on ABC7 Eyewitness News (L.A.) one of their reports included a quick sound bite from a young Latino who said he had volunteered to work extra hours at his job so that his father could stay home while ICE is so focused on arresting people they "think" are criminals. My immediate thought was that he is a good son; my second thought was that I had more respect for him than I do for almost anyone in the current federal administration.
And I'm white. With Black friends, Latino friends, Jewish friends, you name it. By my standards, they are all good people and that is all that matters to me.
I fear the good Dr. King's dream is being turned into a nightmare these days and turning out exactly the opposite of what he had hoped for.
