Amen Bryan!
Having also grown up here in Sacramento, I too listened to the mightly KROY. Heck, even my mother did when she attended high school in the late 50's.
This entire episode is sad indeed. I remember that everyone was listening to KROY and for my friends and me, it was a magical station--Wonder Rabbitt, TN Tanaka (sp?), and the rest. I remember my father taking me to the studios on Arden Way, and we watched through the window as the DJ back-cued 45's. It was magical to me, and I knew radio was in my future.
My fondest memory is when I was about 13 years old and KROY was in the basement of an Old Sacramento building. My friend and I were trying to see whether we could look into the studio but we found only a solid door. As we were walking away, one of the DJs walked up and asked us what we were doing. After we explained, he let us in and we watched the DJ work his magic: cue records, insert carts, talk on-air. To me, it was magical, and I was truly depressed when we had to leave.
So, I agree: for many of us, 1240 is much more than "just a frequency."
