More 1240....Sadness

I just finished.... Wow! You're right--it is completely unbelieveable that the press has not picked this up....

This is really a sad event for 1240. I remember the station (KROY) as a powerhouse when I was growing up in Sacramento....

Please Read this about their tower troubles in this Lawsuit filed in Federal Court.

I have no comment other than my complete amazement that there has been NO PRESS ON THIS:

??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

For the record, the station's call letters for 1240 are KRJY and 1620 KSMH.

KSMH just filed for an STA to broadcast from a new shorter tower next to the present tower owned by Diamond Broadcasting.

KZSA is just a name for "the broadcast tower entity". It looks like it was acquired when Diamond purchased KSQR from Moon. Moon bought KSQR from KZSA broadcasting several years earlier.

Daggs and IHR are going to lose this one without a doubt. Diamond is going to be resoundingly vindicated on this one. A friend of mine had several million dollars worth of equipment owned by him on state land. The business he operated was not such a great success and he shut it down. The state then tried to take all of his equipment in payment for money owed to the state and the court right here in Sacramento refused to grant the state authority to block him from removing his equipment. He got to remove all of his property from the state owned land and he still has it all. There are solid laws preventing this exact thing from happening to anyone over lease or rent payments for the use of land. The lessor can kick you off the property but you can't keep the tenants property that is on the property. No matter how permenant a radio installation looks it is considered temporary and can be removed quite easily and you'd never know it was ever there once it is removed. I can't wait to see IHR and Daggs response to this suit! Zowie!

Isn't it interesting that all of this is happening in the same time frame and quite near the Cal-Expo and railyard property that the Maloof's and the city of Sacramento want to turn into a new sports arena for the Sacramento Kings? Mmmmmmm very interesting indeed! Little players working for the benefit of the big boys perhaps? Perhaps the land above the dump can be converted into a parking lot maybe?

If you read any original complaint, it will look compelling. You really need to hear both sides of the story to a conclusion. For the record, I'm not picking on the Diamond ownership. I'll remain neutral on the subject except to say that I find this to be a really sad situation.

A real business person who really values having their own business in whatever field they're in would have had the foresite to make sure all the I's were dotted and all the T's crossed and would have known that "YOU CAN'T TRUST ANYONE!" Paula seems to be learning this lesson the hard way! I don't feel sorry for anyone that lets this happen to them. Sorry but that's just the way it is!
As Far As 1240 KROY goes it's just ancient history and you can never go home again! By the way 1240 is just a radio frequency and that's all it will ever be and the past has nothing to with that. It was the people and the time we were in that made KROY what it was! And that is exactly what it missing from radio today, to bad all these stupid corporations can't see that at all and they will go the way of the dodo bird it's just a matter of time!. That's just the way it is too! You can see it more everyday! Listen radio executives you get out what the **** you put in and that is the way it is in any business endeavor. And if your not getting anything in return your in the wrong business!

Yes, 1240 is only a radio frequency, and it is the people who make a station great, but to those of us who actually worked at 1240 KROY it is still a sad thing to see happen. It was a magical place for us. For me, even more so. I grew up in Sacramento and was lucky enough to get a job at KROY. It may be gone in a physical way, but it does live on in our hearts and memories. There is a rather tight knit group of alumni that still keep in touch through a Yahoo group and for us the magic is still there. We've been discussing what's been going on over the last few days and it is sad to see what has happened with the 1240 frequency...

Amen Bryan!

Having also grown up here in Sacramento, I too listened to the mightly KROY. Heck, even my mother did when she attended high school in the late 50's.

This entire episode is sad indeed. I remember that everyone was listening to KROY and for my friends and me, it was a magical station--Wonder Rabbitt, TN Tanaka (sp?), and the rest. I remember my father taking me to the studios on Arden Way, and we watched through the window as the DJ back-cued 45's. It was magical to me, and I knew radio was in my future.

My fondest memory is when I was about 13 years old and KROY was in the basement of an Old Sacramento building. My friend and I were trying to see whether we could look into the studio but we found only a solid door. As we were walking away, one of the DJs walked up and asked us what we were doing. After we explained, he let us in and we watched the DJ work his magic: cue records, insert carts, talk on-air. To me, it was magical, and I was truly depressed when we had to leave.

So, I agree: for many of us, 1240 is much more than "just a frequency."

We used to ride our bikes to the Arden Way location and look through the window, so I know exactly how you felt ChiefOperator. I was brought in to KROY in January of 1976 by Jo Jo Weed who was the music director and to a 17 year old high school student it was like being ushered into a fantasy world I could only imagine until that point. When I got there they had just moved to Old Town and everything was fresh and new. I spent 2 and a half years at KROI and KROY and it's still the most memorable period of my radio career. It just didn't last long enough. No knock on my time at KXOA either. About half the crew there had come from KROY and it was blast. We had a great GM and beautiful facilities. The only problem then was the mass exodus of listeners to FM.

I count myself very lucky to have worked at KROY and then at KZAP when it began it's ratings domination. Both great stations, but for me KROY was just the most fun.

What's happened to 1240 is sad, but you could say that about many great AM's accross the country that now are largely forgotten.

Bryan-

Thanks for the memories. Indeed, it was a great time. I just returned from a friend's home, where a group of us discussed many of the old stations: KNDE, KROY, KZAP, KPOP.

Not to change the thread, but when were you at KZAP? I recall that giant as well. In around '80-'82 (or earlier??), it seemed EVERYONE listened to KZAP. Were you at the 9th/Jst studios?

Okay, one last comment and then I stop crying over this whole ordeal :). Almost everyday, I read numerous comments on Radio-Info.com from folks saddened to see the state of radio today: no connection to the community or to the listeners, no localism, no quality jocks, no "magic." Of course, they are correct and I agree.

In contrast, KROY had all the great qualities that stations lack today: connection to the community and the listeners, awesome jocks, and an overall feeling that the jocks were talking directly to you and were your friends. The station was magical..

To those of you who listened to KROY, I think you'll agree. To those who never heard KROY, it was truly great radio...

ChiefOperator , glad to share, indeed it was a great time for radio. As for KZAP, yes I did work at the 9th and "J" Street studios. It was an old building built around the turn of the 20th century, very comforable, very lived in. The control room looked out eastward over 9th and the edge of what we called "Gallo" park. It was like working in someone's living-room. I was there from January 1979 through February 1980 doing middays and was the production director, I even narrated and produced the very first KZAP Rock Awards. It was the very start of the station's rise and domination of the Sacramento ratings. In less than a year we were in the double digits. I've been blessed to work at both KROY and KZAP, fond memories to be sure...

Hey Guy's and Gals: Whatever happened to that phrase you heard when you were on your way out the door after your wonderful many years behind the mic? Radio: It's a business!, no hard feelings towards you at all. Well that's the problem it's a business and whomever owns the business is responsible for having the passion to do it right and not let these radio sharks out to destroy them ever cross the station's doorway! (Without having at least three independent lawyers look over the proposals!) Many smart operators would have never let the sharks in the door! Notable cases that we can all recall is when Ed stolz let the sharks from Entercom walk into his office with their poisoness "Letter Of Intent" in hand! And here it is again Daggs and IHR have their "Letter Of Intent" and a brand new victim! Do any of these people truely watch the world around them and take notes? I guess not. Again I'm sorry but KROY's history doesn't have a flying fig to do with all the shortsited actions of both Ms. Nelson and Mister Stolz! Remember, Radio Is A Business! And for the record I was listening to KROY from the late 50's all the way until it was ruined under the ownership of the Jonssons (Again No Real Passion For The Business Of Radio!) and under the stewardship of Dennis Newhall and his famous last word's "KROY 1240 It'll never be the same!" and it wasn't! 1240 KENZ what a joke that was! Now there's an example of sadness! My memories of KROY go way deeper (eleven years at least before Wonder Rabbit (Martin Ashely) was ever contacted by Johnny Hyde to be on the station.) than what has been sited here! What I read is a lot of johnny come lately's commenting on the history of the mighty 1240. Where were you in the fall of 1958? I was right here listening to KROY.

I have heard alot of stories on both Ken & Mark Jonsson. Some good and some bad. They literally turned 1240 into a joke however didn't they have early success on KROY-96.9 when it was "Adult Rock" from 1980-83? They even bought then Country KQKK-96.7 Manteca (now KMRQ) and did a simulcast of 96.9. I was actually surprised when they dropped Rock in favor of Adult Contemporary as KSAC. I think the Jonsson's owned Sacramento Magazine.

Actually KROY debuted in 1937. KROY's Top 40 format debuted in 1960. So RadioStarOne could have listened in 1958, it just wasn't a Top 40 powerhouse in those days.

>>>I can understand that...but he sounds like he is referring to top 40. Only top 40 stations in 58' were KXOA, KGMS 1380 (might have call letters wrong) and 1140 out of Stockton , right before the move to Sacramento.

I do indeed remember KRAK when it was doing the top 40 music format. It just didn't last very long that's all. My sister and I loved to listen to both KROY and KXOA in those early days and KROY was hardly exclusivly top 40 in those days because the music on the top 40 charts was very broad based then. A lot of folks I know say it was quite boring at times but then came Johnny Hyde and his Gear Hour and the Beatles and the rest is history! I may not remember all the exact times of the top 40 format's beginning on KROY because that was 50 years ago and we all get fuzzy memories to be sure. But 1240 KROY was on the family's car radio in the fall of 1958. So I'm not perfect are any of us? I do remember riding by the KROY transmitter on KROY Way many times on Sundy mornings on the way home from church, and by the way: My best friend at the time Connie and I used to ride our bike's from Rancho Cordova, to the studio's at 977 Arden Way many many times in the 60's and then driving in the car in the early seventies. Those were the days to be sure and we all enjoyed them because the trips there marked many mile stones in our lives. Thats why we remember them so fondly because of those milestones growing up! And because if our parents knew we were going that far we'd be grounded for life or longer or so it seemed at the time! lol...
