MORE CBS CUTS

CBS axed three at KRLD, including morning co-anchor Carla Marion ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

Not only did they cut Carla, they did it before she returned from Maternity Leave. (READ: Still out on F.M.L.A.)
She was due back on-air Monday AM and they called her to come to the office today to give her the axe. Classy! Morning drive won't be the same. (No offense to Brad Barton or Mike Rogers.)

Damn.

To be honest, Carla was really the only reason to listen in the morning. I was really looking forward to her coming back next week. She had been with the station for as long as I remember and was one of their major talents. Put her in the booth with ANY of the other on-air talents and she immediately had chemistry.

And to dismiss her the Friday before she was due back - one of the most crass moves from a major corporation. KRLD is left with Alice Rios as the only on-air female reporter---is this due to CBS going in a more jock-sports oriented direction, like KLLI? Should Alice be watching her back as well?

This move will just hasten KRLD's inevitable slide into obscurity, much like KLIF before it.

I really hope one of the other stations snaps her up.

Who were the other two? I've heard someone named Scott and Barb recently, who I am guessing are new hires. Did they get cut?

I'm curious to know who the other two are...

But to anyone thinking of hiring Carla Marion, I have to say, she would be a good hire. Not only is she a talented air personality, she is also a good writer, and functioned quite effectively as afternoon editor.
And, on top of that, she has a positive personality and a good sense of humor.
I'd hire her.

Carla is going to end up on her feet, no matter if she leaves the business or stays in. I also give congrats to her and her husband on the birth of their kid, what an amazing gift that is :)

Back on topic, what a total doucebag move by CBS radio, to cut someone on FMLA opens you up for a potential civil and federal lawsuit, as I my understanding under the law is your are unable to cut a worker whos on leave for any reason. That opens a whole huge can of worms and id like to see how this would play out in a court of law...

Could you imagine the CBS-11 investigation of a major employer in the D-FW area with multiple companies under its umbrella who cut somebody the Friday before she returned from maternity leave? I can already hear the scary music and hear Bennett Cunningham's voice, "She gave the best years of her life to XYZ company; now they cut her loose. It's a bad economy, but was it legal? Tonight on CBS-11 News at 10, in HD...." :) But, I guess if you're a media company you can do what you want to because absent a few blogs and this message board, there are darn few people to call you on the carpet publicly.

^I'm sure the corporate lawyers for CBS gave the OK.

Possibly, but don't be so sure. I can't tell you the number of PR messes I have helped clean up (none in the media industry and none local) that would have been avoided by one simple phone call to legal....

I'll miss Carla Marion. She had a nice on-air persona.

Terry King is the next casualty.

Let go just before his shift on Monday morning.

He's a great guy who brought his A game every shift.
Unfortunate.

The Dallas Observer could possibly run the story....

Have they covered TV/Newspaper shenanigans before ??

Anyone know if Carla is any relation to Dan Marion? Dan was GSM at one of the Rock stations (Q102?) a long, long time ago. I thought he moved to Chicago at one point.

CBS has the bean counter working overtime to balance budgets. $crew the ratings or listeners wants. Count the beans
Radio is a business just like any other. CBS is doing what it needs to in this tough economic time.

You got that one right... they are exiting the Denver market altogether...

Just this morning they signed an agreement to sell three of their stations in Denver

country KWLI
hot AC KIMN
classic hits KXKL

to Wilks Broadcasting for $19.5 million in cash.

Well, of course, you can always cook beans. Those are what feed the robotic staff. Cooking people and ratings aren't that good for the tummy. ;)
