More Info About The New WLNY

One thing that still doesn't seem clear - are these news/talk shows going to be primarily focused on Long Island news, or will it encompass the entire tri-state area? I would think they would want to cover the entire area to gain a larger audience.

IMO: If they're going to bring in talent like Carolina Bermudez, I doubt "The Couch" is going to be a Long Island-centric show.

There's no way this is going to be a LI-centric station. Maybe their news will have 1 or 2 more LI based stories per day, but they are going to treat this as a full NYC market "compliment" to Channel 2. No question. It will be run out of the CBS Broadcast Center on W. 57th Street.

Do they have any plans to add a translator for better OTA coverage in NYC and the western suburbs?

CBS would've bought the translators that had already existed if they wanted to extend OTA coverage.

Not necessarily. The translators that existed, particularly the one in Morristown, were extremely weak and useless to any OTA viewer. I'm thinking more like a translator on top of ESB that would cover the 5 boroughs and immediate suburbs.

WCBS does have two Long Island-based reporters plus Richard Rose who, I think, will also focus on island events.

With the new news programs starting on Monday, any word if they will be simulcast on 2.2? Seems as if they are truly limiting themselves if they will only be on WLNY.

Unlikely, since WLNY is on virtually every cable system in the tri-state region and in HD, something it would not be if it was carried on a sub channel of WCBS.

From what I read on the WLNY Facebook page, they apparently used to have a translator in Brooklyn/Queens which would have provided OTA coverage for at least part of NYC. But apparently that translator was not included as part of the sale of the station, so it is no longer on the air.

WLNY will have to function as a KCAL9 type operation for NYC. This means TV 10/55 they can air sports programming like the Yankees, NY Giants, NY Mets, NY Jets whenever WCBS2 can't pre-empt shows because of Network reasons. Look at KCAL9 they air LA Lakers, LA Angels and LA Dodgers whenever KCBS2 has to air CBS programming.

WCBS doesn't carry any of those teams except the Jets, so you won't see any Yankees, Mets, or Giants games on WLNY. And I can't imagine a Jets game would ever be pre-empted on WCBS. WLNY has carried an occasional Nets game in the past (usually in the spring when Nets games conflict with Yankees games).

WLNY has for some time picked up CBS Sports programming when WCBS was covering breaking or ongoing local news, such as the 9/11 coverage last year and also storm coverage. When did WCBS last show a Mets or Yankees game?

About 5 years ago WCBS was the OTA home of the Yankees and would show about 20 games a year (usually on a weekday night). The carriage rights for those games are now on WWOR MY 9.

Virtually, but not all. There are a number of counties (particularly in NJ) that are within the NY DMA however, WLNY is not carried by the local cable systems. Also, all of the OTA viewers outside of the island will be in the dark. WCBS should be working on a plan to get the WLNY programming, especially news, to the entire viewing area, not just most of it. Seems like a repeater in NYC, as mentioned by others here, would be an ideal start. I also wish the out of town PBS stations would do the same.

I read that the Time Warner system in Poughkeepsie just added WLNY this week, so it sounds like CBS is actively working towards expanding the channel's cable carriage.

July 4th, WLNY will be airing a 12-hour I Love Lucy marathon from 9 AM to 9 PM. This would be a semi-flashback to the WLIG days when they aired some classic TV shows. I checked out the station's schedule online. For the most part it's court shows, The Doctors (from CBS2) Judge Judy, Dr. Phil and will also include a 9PM Newscast, produced obviously by CBS2

Well it looks like Directv has added the HD feed for WLNY today, just in time for the newscast launches.
