More Layoffs At WNYC

The problem with those syndicated formats is that they are locked into one-hour program blocks, which prevents playing long works, such as many symphonies. You won’t hear a complete Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, for example.

There are also internal breaks. Classical 24 has two 60 second floating avails between :06 and :59 after the hour that can be locally filled (only one break during overnights.) There are also hard times at :59 and :00 which are options for TOHID and local announcements, and an optional five minute block :01-06 that can be used for news or other local material. So a lot of constrictions for longer musical works.
The Classical Station (WCPE) out of Raleigh, NC offers their programs free of charge to anyone who wants to affiliate. All local, volunteer run. Full time classical music, no nonsense.

Yes, It’s very disappointing that my home city San Diego, along with Houston and Miami don’t have traditional classical radio anymore. I donate to KUSC in Los Angeles to help keep classical music with fun personalities alive. While there are alternatives like Amazon Echo and Sirius XM, they lack great local personalities like Jeff Spurgeon on WQXR and Jennifer Miller on KUSC.
I left out no OTA classical stations in Atlanta and Nashville. So many large cities in the southern US (including SW San Diego) have lost their traditional classical station. Of course it’s not too hard or expensive to play other sources of classical, but no alternative is cheaper, easier, and more local than OTA classical radio. I think it’s a cultural loss for these cities.

Up here in upstate New York, we're lucky to have four all-classical public radio services that are locally programmed.

WXXI Classical (WXXO 91.5) here in Rochester draws heavily on the resources of the Rochester Philharmonic and Eastman School of Music. WNED Classical in Buffalo, WCNY in Syracuse (with repeaters in Utica and Watertown) and WMHT in Albany are all good listens too.

Colorado Public Radio Classical is locally programmed 24/7 and hosted daily 6 am-9 pm Mountain time, with stations in Denver and Fort Collins and translators in various mountain communities. The Denver station is KVOD, commemorating the longtime commercial classical station in Denver at 99.5. Also streams.

That’s fantastic. I remember driving in northern NY state to Canada and was really impressed with the high quality local classical music stations there. Good for the funders for supporting classical radio.

The only 'free' classical service is to simulcast WCPE as much or as little as you wish. Classical 24 and Beethoven Network charge based on market size but rates are quite reasonable.

As for WCPE, here's details: Rebroadcast / Retransmisson Consent | The Classical Station
Affiliates: Partner Stations | The Classical Station

The big difference between Classical 24 and Beethoven Network is WCPE's ability to play a full work versus a movement:

WCPE is a little gold nugget <3 .

Pass. Although they reversed the decision, not the sort of people I want to support in 2024.
I get they don't want to upset their more politically conservative Southern listeners (the bulk of their listening audience). I don't listen to The Met broadcasts so this was irrelevant to me.

Plenty of other sources carry "uncensored" Met Opera broadcasts, it seems at least one classical music station per city. Not hard to find.

WCPE is one of the last few radio stations that has a live local announcer at the microphone in the wee overnight hours. You can even call the studio phone and talk to them about the music if you wish. That counts for a lot in my book.

I appreciate that they’re live - that’s a big deal. Classical24 is as well in all dayparts but you can’t call them.

I have long suspected WQXR was only live in AM drive and that was confirmed earlier in this thread, or another thread.

I don’t want to open the live / VT debate but it’s disappointing to learn in NYC they’re not live on-air most of the day. Sad.

High Standards, say what you want of WCPE but at least they try to reflect what their donors want as was the case here. There's always somebody ready to try to bring down a station for something. Like us all, radio, like people aren't perfect. I have to question what your comments do to add to the discussion of programming options for WQXR.

Personally, I could care less. I appreciate the music, the live presentation and the fact they're trying to expand classical music.

Sounds like the GM knew the audience well but you can bet primary donors had already okayed the GM doing that the GM did. You simply don't risk your big donors with a 'stunt' like this unless they know about it and are okay with it.

Has WCPE ever refused to air a performance of Strauss's Salome?

For those unfamiliar with the opera:
Salome (Work - Richard Strauss/Hedwig Lachmann)
I thought there was an article about this around the beginning of the year. Something about the new GM or something suddenly looking at things from a conservative viewpoint. Or maybe it was one doner raising a fuss. Very fuzzy memory, but I do know this is not new. This issue has been out there for a few months.
