MORE NONSENSE AT ONE UTICA STATION???

I think most of us on here, try to conduct our comments professionally, even though some of our thoughts are direct and to the point. If what I was told is true, and comes about next week, then I would say, the move is stupid, and someone got a raw deal.

As many of us know, Bill Keeler left KISS-FM, and began doing mornings on WXUR-92.7-FM out of Herkimer. This station has never been a factor in the market. Whether everyone agrees with what Keeler does, in my opinion, he is a very talented person, and has always attracted a loyal following, along with strong ratings.

There seemed to be some light at the end of the tunnel for WXUR, when Keeler arrived. Keeler could put WXUR on the map. WXUR with help from the city of Utica and Keeler, would move their facilities to Keelers downtown Utica offices. WXUR would hopefully install new equipment. Maybe increase their power to 25,000 watts, which was rumored to have been approved, maybe change formats and become "The River", like the former Clear Channel River at 93.5-FM. All of these factors might have enabled WXUR to get on the map and become more of a Utica station to listeners who had never heard of them.

Now, the word is....ownership, out of the clear blue sky, tells Keeler that beginning December 3rd, they are moving him to afternoons, because WXUR owes it to their listeners to put Don Imus back on mornings.

If this is true all I can say is...Are You Kidding Me!! Lead Keeler on, then spring this on him. What a dirty trick. And when ownership says they owe it to their listeners....Give me a break. What drugs are they on. Imus never did anything for that station. He had no listeners in men or women under 45 years of age, and he had no women over 45. The only audience Imus had were some men 45-Plus, and those were in the the low single digits.

I am not saying I like everything Keeler does, but he has always gotten higher numbers than Imus by double to three times, and gets men and women in a wider age demo, so this move makes no sense, and isn't fair to anyone. I understand you never know in this business, but this move makes CC look like angels.

There is one station/group that should come a callin on Keeler if they were smart. It would be the best thing they ever did, if, they can get together and come to an agreement. Then Keeler can let WXUR drift back into the darkness.

Trouble in paradise? We're all shocked...very, very, very, very, very, very, very, shocked. Lets just hope it doesn't end up in court...because the last one is still dragging on...and on...and on.

I don't love the guy or hate him, but that's definitely a very raw deal for Keeler, if what you say is true. What the heck was Mindy thinking? It's not like she could call it a defensive move -- who else would possibly take Imus if she declines?

If I were Keeler, I'd be very insulted. Does Mindy actually think Imus could do better than Keeler? The guy hasn't even had a full book with WXUR yet. The fall book is still in progress for another few weeks. Even then, Keeler moved over midway through the book, so the fall book isn't even a fair evaluation of his performance. Furthermore, if Keeler is still paying for the time and selling his own spots... WXUR should be happy with that. I'd assume whatever Keeler is paying MUST be more than whatever they were making off local avails during Imus.

I guess the big question here is: what does Keeler's contract say? If he's got an airtight deal giving him mornings, then WXUR has no choice but to honor it. But if there are any loopholes whatsoever, I almost have to fault Keeler for assuming Imus would never make a comeback (or for rushing into the deal without reading it carefully enough).

Granted, in the end, I think Imus would be a very bad move for WXUR. After all, it's not like he jumped to satellite radio like Stern did. He's coming back from being fired. Will the audience come back strong as ever, or will the new Imus be just a shadow of his former self? He's also 67 years old. How much longer until he decides he's had enough and it's time to retire?

Keeler, on the other hand, is clearly prepared to get into it for the long haul. He's already tried the big market thing; he probably won't repeat that. He's here to stay, he has a proven record with the market. Even if you don't listen to him, you still know his name. While Imus may be on the air for maybe 5 years at best (I can't see the guy staying on the air much past 70), Keeler could potentially rack up just as many years with WXUR as he did with WRCK.

The way I see it, Imus is a shaky bet, while Keeler is more of a "sure thing." If Keeler is moved to afternoons, he's gonna be looking to jump ship as soon as someone offers him morning drive elsewhere. And then WXUR is stuck with no options when Imus finally gets fired or retires. Remember, the main reason Imus is getting back on the air, is because he's being syndicated by Citadel -- who is likely carrying him in most, if not all, of their own markets. You need plenty of affiliates in major markets for a network show to work. But if those stations see their numbers go down, Citadel can drop him just as fast as they picked him up.

Now, let me understand this. Mindy, the lady of the trailer, is more interested in paying Imus to do mornings than getting paid by Keeler to do mornings? Memo to Keeler - - you are officially over.

This sets up a battle for the ages. The TERRIBLE local sports show on WIBX vs. the TERRIBLE local talk show from Herkimer.
The winner gets the "trailer".

This is beyond pathetic! While Bankrupt Bill can't buy his way on to mornings on a Herkimer station, his ex gopher Kidd Chris is doing mornings in Philadelphia for BIG money.Guess what?He is not buying the time, they are paying HIM!
When you are good on the radio, they pay you to do a show. When you are yesterdays news, you pay the station, and then they STILL throw you off.
Too funny if it wasn't so pathetic!

Thanks for the WIBX compliment again. Amazing how many people listening to the show and high school games. The comments from fans, coaches and other media people telling us how superior the WIBX broadcasts are to the so called competition is mind boggling...not a big surprise.

I have no problem with the small minded click of people that wants to put WIBX down. The people that matter know what product is better.

Thanks for continuing to listen and monitor every move we make with our terrible sports.

It's a fact. Parents will tune in for high school sports...they just can't help it...they will listen to anything to hear their kid's name mentioned. The sad part is, their name gets mispronounced...mangled.. Ouch. But they did listen...and wince...'cuz that's what local sports is on ibx.....it's part of the charm..

Mr.Adman we have an idea!
How about you and Wee Willie join forces and take over Mindy's AM station. There would be no stopping you giants of Mohawk Valley Broadcasting.
Of course, you would have to pay her for that opportunity but that's where it's going for you two.

Don't thank me. I'm a parent. I have to listen. I would listen to Frank Sinatra played backwards if my kid was going to get mentioned. Coaches gushing over your coverage??? um, well they're coaching while you're mispronouncing...they're not listening.
Amateur...and so easily ruffled...

The Game's Afoot!

Gee, it seems that the Galaxians have decided to play the game in Utica.

It's too bad that most of the people in U/R (or Syracuse) will never see any numbers thanks to Ed & Co. I guess that's one way that your sales people can paint a picture that's about as accurate as the info you gave Route 81 when you thought you had them sold on your Utica properties a couple of years ago.

Ed, with your track record, I'm not sure that you should be throwing stones at anyone, let alone calling anyone washed up. Your track record in Albany didn't even get you to the spin cycle. Your moves in Utica so far are less than inspiring.

If Regent were more capable, you'd be on the road to repeating your Albany performance.

The goings on in Utica radio (re: WXUR and Imus) never cease to amaze me. Apparently, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm glad to see Ed "Chia head" is spending his CEO time on this board ripping an on-air personality. One would think this guy wouldn't stoop so low as to go after an announcer! Especially, one who is "washed up" and a "has been". Ed is obsessed with Bill Keeler... one would think he would be too busy to play message board games... but, Keeler is very personal to Ed. References to the lawsuit Bill has against Galaxy (which ONLY Ed would know about) - references to Bill's close friend Kid Chris (that only Ed would know). The fact is, Keeler came back to Utica because of divorce. His boys are in Junior High and he was man enough to give up any out of market aspirations so he could be with his kids. He wouldn't have custody of his children if he wasn't dedicated to them and Ed knows as much as anyone...being a father to his kids is more important to him than his career. (which by the way has been quite successful in a market that is very difficult financially). As for saying he's bankrupt...let's not forget the days at Dave's Diner when Ed couldn't even make payroll and the Nimo bill and Keeler single handedly pulled him out of financial disaster. Keeler draws...no matter where he is... he pulls numbers and he's done it over and over!) Maybe he is washed up and a "has been" - but the fact remains, he must be enough of a factor in Ed's mind to inspire him to attack this poor "on-air" soul. The only reason for Ed Levine to attack Keeler (and boy has he attacked) is because Keeler is STILL a factor in Ed Levine's life. When he wakes up in the morning, probably in his $1000 P-J's - we can all rest assured, he starts his day thinking about Bill Keeler. We call that - obsession. Move on Ed - you're a CEO - start acting like one!

LOL. Yeah...it's been a big secret otherwise..."And everyone shook my hand...except Ed. He won't even look at me. He won't even talk to me"...sound familiar? LOL

references to Bill's close friend Kid Chris (that only Ed would know)

LOL...another big secret...a secret so big it was one of the rolling headlines on this very page..LOL

The fact is, Keeler came back to Utica because of divorce.

LOL...nice spin. From what I've seen on Oprah when you don't marry your baby's momma's...all two or three or four of them...you can't get divorced.

His boys are in Junior High and he was man enough to give up any out of market aspirations so he could be with his kids.

Not that it has anything to do with Lil' Billy....but I seem to remember someone having quite different feelings for four or five years....that guy sure didn't think his offspring were very important...LOL

We call that - obsession.

LOL...like dragging out a pointless lawsuit for years while you're constantly outmanuevered..LOL

Sure hope that money comes through before the end of the year...I hear Mayor Roefaro is already taking a dim view of some of his predecessor's shady deals...sure hate to see an audit coming down the pike...LOL

Yippee-ki-yay...

Gee, Ed, sounds like you're riding pretty high at the moment. What are you going to say once your changes take the Utica stations into the tank, and you can't even afford to pay the electric bill?

It sure might be interesting if Regent gets its act together, or - more likely - decides to "do a Watertown" and sell Utica. There are people out there who just might be able to take some of that local talent that you axed and give your syndication a run for its (lack of) money.

The signal on 96.1 just might do a nice job against your version of WOUR if somebody programmed it decently. As we saw in Albany, you're not hard to beat.

It's Official...Keeler begins his 3-6-PM stint beginning this Monday on WXUR-92.7-FM, and Imus returns to mornings.

WXUR ownership has also invited hundreds of people, (I'm one of them) to a dinner gathering next Wednesday night. They have sent out cards with the headline of "There's A New Station In Town" 92.7-FM "The Drive"

They are saying it is a new locally owned radio station for Central and Northern NY and the Mohawk Valley. Plenty of other info on the mailer, but it would seem to me that they are going to program the station like CC did with 93.5, The River. Rumor has it that Jack Moran formerly with CC is going to program the station. They also said they want to introduce Keeler and his staff.

I will not take pot shots at the station or what they plan to do like some other owners do and probably will do.

Even though I have some reservations with some of the things they have done in the past, I wish them the best. I do hear a lot of people complaining since The River is gone. It would seem if WXUR runs that type of format, increases power, installs some new equipment to sound better, and has both Imus and Keeler, they might be able to put a dent into the market. I guess time will tell.

No doubt I'm in the minority here, but I will miss WXUR with their oldies format. The syndicated format that they ran that was once known as "The Oldies Channel" was once of the better syndicated oldies formats that I have heard over the years. The format had been discarded by a couple of different Albany stations years ago, but with my yagi rooftop antenna, I had no difficulty receiving WXUR, in the Albany area. They stuck with that format for nearly fourteen years too....When did the flip occur? I noticed it for the first time, late Saturday night. They were not running any IDs, liners or any kind of identifiers at all...
