I think most of us on here, try to conduct our comments professionally, even though some of our thoughts are direct and to the point. If what I was told is true, and comes about next week, then I would say, the move is stupid, and someone got a raw deal.
As many of us know, Bill Keeler left KISS-FM, and began doing mornings on WXUR-92.7-FM out of Herkimer. This station has never been a factor in the market. Whether everyone agrees with what Keeler does, in my opinion, he is a very talented person, and has always attracted a loyal following, along with strong ratings.
There seemed to be some light at the end of the tunnel for WXUR, when Keeler arrived. Keeler could put WXUR on the map. WXUR with help from the city of Utica and Keeler, would move their facilities to Keelers downtown Utica offices. WXUR would hopefully install new equipment. Maybe increase their power to 25,000 watts, which was rumored to have been approved, maybe change formats and become "The River", like the former Clear Channel River at 93.5-FM. All of these factors might have enabled WXUR to get on the map and become more of a Utica station to listeners who had never heard of them.
Now, the word is....ownership, out of the clear blue sky, tells Keeler that beginning December 3rd, they are moving him to afternoons, because WXUR owes it to their listeners to put Don Imus back on mornings.
If this is true all I can say is...Are You Kidding Me!! Lead Keeler on, then spring this on him. What a dirty trick. And when ownership says they owe it to their listeners....Give me a break. What drugs are they on. Imus never did anything for that station. He had no listeners in men or women under 45 years of age, and he had no women over 45. The only audience Imus had were some men 45-Plus, and those were in the the low single digits.
I am not saying I like everything Keeler does, but he has always gotten higher numbers than Imus by double to three times, and gets men and women in a wider age demo, so this move makes no sense, and isn't fair to anyone. I understand you never know in this business, but this move makes CC look like angels.
There is one station/group that should come a callin on Keeler if they were smart. It would be the best thing they ever did, if, they can get together and come to an agreement. Then Keeler can let WXUR drift back into the darkness.
