Morning Man/PD Shane Out at 92 Zew

http://news.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/headline_id=c37373

Tim Camp lets another of radio's true good guys get away. Here's hoping Hurricane Shane finds a new gig soon.

my thought immediately was that his family was still in bham and with bham mtn radio getting an Fm signal, they probably offered him a seat at the table. Budget cuts are news to me.

The way I picked up on it was he left to move back to bham so the zew shifted things around and bought Gene Murrell back in - - Gene must really love the zew to come back whenever they want/need him.....

What I heard was he was blindsided for "budgetary" reasons, then Murrell was brought back for the third time while the night guy was given a raise. Shady individuals down there, beware if a Camp ever comes a callin'

I wonder if either Clear Channel or Cumulus will buy 92 Zew. Or will they bring a similar station (Modern Alt) to the Gulf Coast area? This station has history. This could be something to talk about in the near future.

I wonder if either Clear Channel or Cumulus will buy 92 Zew.

No. Both have the maximum station caps for the market now.

Don't expect any other purchases in medium/small markets (from the big 2) anytime soon.

My math says Cumulus has one more FM in Mobile-Pensacola than CC. CC has 5: 94.9, 96.1, 99.9, 101.5 & 107.3. Cumulus has 6: 92.9, 94.1, 97.5, 100.7, 102.7 & 104.1. So what's stopping CC from picking up another station?

So what's stopping CC from picking up another station?

WNTM 710 AM. Signal overlap and other factors are part of it too. Too much to explain.

Would you clarify to me what a station cap is?

The FCC has market caps. Both CC amd Cumulus are maxed out at this time.

For example WBUV 104.0 was once part of that cap. When they purchased 107.3 (from the aloha trust), they needed to move the COL back to Pascagolua (antenna location & COL changed).

The COL for 104.1 was changed to allow for the purchase of 97.5. The sale of 94.1 & 102.7 (and I think 97.5) was contested by another company, but in the end the FCC allowed it.

So, you won't be seeing any changes. BTW translators don't count with the market cap. You can have as many as you like, as long as you follow the rules for them.

Yeah, CC has WNTM but Cumulus also has WGOK and that WGOK simulcast on 660 plus 1370 and 106.1 in Pensacola. The numbers still don't add up. Cumulus has more stations with bigger signals than CC. CC has some Biloxi stations overlapping into Mobile but Cumulus also has 3 Fort Walton stations overlapping into Pensacola.
I just don't see the exact reason CC couldn't buy another FM.

Once again, it would take three pages to explain. Everyone is maxed out. Ain't gonna happen. The big prize would of been WOSM.That would of been the big catch.

With billions in debt and smaller & medium markets commanding fewer multiples. You won't see any purchases from the big two.

Unless there is revenue potential or better signal, you might see a purchase in a top 50 market. In fact with the exception of NASH & WOR in New York, there have been 0 purchases.

Most of the purchases seen are by smaller groups. Radio management tired of the corporate rat race (see Birmingham), or those who have returned to radio after a hiatus (like me)

In fact Cumulus just did a LMA in Dallas. KESN.

Cumulus Mobile: 92.9, 97.5, 104.1, 660, 900
Cumulus Pens: 94.1, 100.7, 102.7, 106.1, 1370

CC Mobile: 94.9, 96.1, 99.9, 710
CC Pens: 101.5, 107.3, no AMs

Cumulus FWB: 93.3, 96.5, 99.5, 105.5, 1260

CC Biloxi: 92.5, 93.7, 99.1, 104.9, no AMs

I definitely don't think it should happen as the Mobile & Pensacola markets are really one in the same on the FM dial. But Cumulus just changed the COL for 104.1 to Semmes(?) in Mobile County in order to stay under the theoretical 5 station cap in Pensacola. It would seem that Cumulus could unload 660 and add yet another Mobile FM or CC could change a COL of one of their Mobile FMs to NW Florida and add another Mobile signal. Clear Channel Pensacola should be able to add two FMs and an AM.

All the Mobile-Pensacola, Cumulus and Clear Channel, FMs, with the exception of 106.1, are essentually the same in terms of power and coverage areas. I know you say it's tough to explain but since I thought I understood ownership caps and how Cumulus was exploiting loopholes and lax enforcement of FCC rules to completely dominate my radio dial I'm extremely curious why CC or Cumulus absolutely can not add another FM. Could someone at least point me in a direction of what factor I'm missing in my equation?

On the other hand, the only FM that either CC or Cumulus would want to add to their Mobile-Pensacola portfolio is 98.7.... the last locally owned Mobile-Pensacola 100kw FM signal.

The AM's No Pensacola/Mobile market overlap

106.1 Class A No market overlap. That is just a start.

Radio has changed. the K Love/WABD swap was a special situation. (They wanted Nashville & they have 95.7 in Pensacola.)

Nashville is a very important market for the KLOVE folks. The swap of 97.5 & 98.3 solved their problem.

DLT got a bigger signal (#1 25-54 mobile) and it just so happened cumulus saw a opportunity for WABD. The timing was right.

A rare play of the cards.

Let's be honest-the airchecks are pretty stale. A typical problem in this area is the tendency to try and relive the "glory days" rather than evolving with the market. Hopefully in the end it's a positive step toward a better opportunity.

It's locally owned and independent radio at its finest, my friend.

The Xmiter on KLove on 95.7 seems to be acting up, the stereo signal goes in and out. (on all receivers)

Shows how little I listen to local radio any more, I had no idea Shane was even on down here. I might've tuned in just to listen to him, as I remember him from his days at The X in Birmingham. Met him once or twice - he's a nice guy. I hope he finds himself in gainful employment again soon.
