Morning Mess Done

Doubtful about Nudge. Like Ryan Seacrest (when he was here) and Steve & Vikki...once Star decides you're worthless and shows you the door, he's gone on to bigger and better things and isn't looking back. Hopefully the same will be true of Tripp.

And Macro, Shannon, and Super Phat Mikey? Are they under a no compete? Maybe they can land on 955 The Beat. I can hear it now, "Booty Calls on the twenties".

Even if the Morning Mess gets a gig here in town, they have already proven they can't compete.

Once again proving the theory, never be the one who follows a legend be the one after that.

There are exceptions to that. In Washington, when Howard Stern left DC101, the Greaseman came in, and the station and its ratings didn't miss a beat.

Rare....RARE exception.

Howard was yet to be the legend he became at that point.

If management wises up they will. They are the only show Star could put forward that would have a chance of competing with The Bert Show, since they already have a local following. I don't know how C & R would fare overall in morning drive, but this will be the station's 3rd morning show in less than 3 years, and if they hire more newbies (or even a show that's new to the market) only to send them packing before their contract is up again, the station may not recover. Then again, I didn't think they'd make it this far...

But will C&R make a difference? Johnny O has higher ratings than they do right now, if they can't beat him is competing with Bert even feasible?

I also got a chance to see the midday breakdown on Star. Tripp's ratings were a tad higher...ouch.

Seems to me the answer isn't moving Cindy and Ray to mornings, but to stop trying to compete with The Bert Show. They basically admitted that going younger was a bad idea. With Dave still trying to figure out what the heck they are doing, it makes sense to me that you would try to go a little older rather than go head to head with Bert. The older set made them a lot of money with S&V for a long time.

I have to agree with sidechick1. I realize Cindy & Ray would probably not beat The Bert Show. But neither would anything else.

C&R already have a following and would give Star the slightly older show they need. A new show, even one successful in another market, would take time to establish itself and would really be taking a chance. One reason Q100 started beating C&R in afternoons might have been that The Morning Mess drove away listeners to the station as a whole.

The other part of the equation is I believe Star needs to go back to being a music CHR in afternoon drive if they ever want to beat Q.

Now we're not talking about bringing back Crash Clark :D

Star needs to bring Cindy and Ray to the morning show, I think they would do a GREAT job!!

But like Slider said Star doesn't need to compete with The Bert Show they need to OWN Star and quit doing the prank phone calls and making 'appearances' to just make appearances but actually love the listener.

Absolutely right. Radio is about expectations. For umpteen years, Atlanta has come to expect an adult hit music sound from Star 94. If those expectations aren't met, then you cannot win with listeners. What the programming folks at Star seem to have forgotten is that they helped define what the Adult CHR/Hot AC format is today. Best thing to do is for Star to return to their roots and stop trying to imitate someone else's sound. Build those expectations back up.

I've waited over 2 days for a Mark Kanov apologizer or the real Mark himself to say something. When S&V were "not renewed" the pot kept being stirred of how "over" they were and the necessity to move the station into a fresh new direction. Well maybe some posters learned something. That while the opinion of a dozen or so that write, the vote the audience gives is the only one that matters. Management's rush to be right amazingly gets a free pass. A PD took the fall, but he was rather powerless it seems. A GM took an "earlier retirement", a consultant who found them still consults, and honestly the Mess will probably survive in a medium market but they can't be oversold.
It's amazing how long it took for this to crumble yet the numbers starting looking like stock market numbers after Obama took over shortly after their arrival.
Sales people have left. Revenue is way down, yet they blame the economy. And a great station seemed to hit a flat tire almost overnight.
Cindy & Ray. Good show. Career suicide to move to mornings even if they do have an inside track with middle management.
Star just lost it's way. It's not for anybody to build a career on now. The hypocricy is management always blames talent and with so many genuises over there so cocky, looks like none knew what to do then or now.
Should of sold the station 2 years ago when they had a station to sell.

Dream Team---

for those of you who read AllAccess "On The Beach" interviews (maybe within the past year), are there any personalities/interviews that strike you as a a possible good match for the Atlanta market?

Wait, this thread isn't about porn??

I wasn't aware Star 94 had a morning show. Interesting.

What is Star doing temporarily in morning drive?

Tripp West was playing the hits in between spot breaks, news and traffic.

If Rob Stadler stays on, he'll work with his fifth morning show at 94.1 (Gary McKee, Murphy & McKeever, Steve & Vikki and The Morning Mess).

I have an idea. bring Randy Cook from 640 WGST and Spiff Carner from True Oldies 106.7 to bring Randy and Spiff back together. I think they might bring an older audience to Star 94. A lot of people like them when they were on together over at Fox 97, Cool 105.7, and Lite 94.9

What is this fantasy football? None of this makes sense. Both our under contract to two separate entities. Their demo which about now is primarily in senior citizen housing does not mix with Star whatsoever?

With all due respect to Fox97Fan (you're not really "goodtimesandgreatoldies" under a new handle, are you?), this makes less than zero sense. If Steve & Vikki were "too old", R&S are right out.

We can debate whether or not 86ing S&V was a good idea (we did it before). But R&S are a horrid fit for a hot AC, let alone a CHR.

I could see R&S doing MOYL before I could see them doing hot AC or younger.

The only potential fit for R&S is True Oldies, or maybe a little drivetime talk on AM. Furthermore, WSB is covered, thankyouverymuch, and WGKA is too "serious" for R&S (although it would be interesting to contemplate getting rid of Bill Bennett for something livelier to spark interest in potential new listeners--not that I would recommend this). That leaves WGST...

R&S could do well on a syndicated oldies format, but the problem is is that they aren't "period" (Drake-y) enough for a canned format. Furthermore, canned formats are light on chatter.

Aw cumon. How much stuff that actually happens in Atlanta radio makes sense?
