Most pirates sound the same

I've heard Streetz 96 in Yonkers and as far east as Jamaica. It has to be running 1000 watts, remember it's right next to WQXR.
 
thats funny...the farthest west i picked up Streetz was exit 6 on I-280 but the farthest south I picked up streetz was in Marlboro, completely knocking out Wired.

Really? Are you sure this wasn't a different pirate on the same frequency? I can't even get Streetz as far as Route 3 in Clifton, Rutherford, or Secaucus. But maybe its signal strength is variable. The other night, its signal was poor here in northern Newark and in Belleville. Today it seems stronger.

Lately, the strongest pirate seems to be 99.9 Blaze FM, "New Jersey's Hottest Caribbean" or something like that, which reaches Secaucus with no problem. IIRC, I also heard the 104.7 pirate in Secaucus, but most of pirates heard in Newark don't reach Secaucus at all, or just faint traces.

After Newark, Paterson must be the runner-up for pirates in NJ. Today I was angered by an 89.7 Latino pirate in Clifton/Paterson which interfered with WKCR (89.9). The 89.7 pirate reaches to Route 3 at the Passaic River but does not reach to Belleville. I also heard pirates in Clifton/southern Paterson at 94.3, 95.1 and some other frequencies, and of course, there's the powerful 90.5 pirate that hurts WFUV (90.7). None of these reach down to Belleville/Newark except maybe 95.1. (I often hear various pirates at 95.1 but I'm not sure which is which.)

and the legal stations don't complain. Amazing!

Yes they do (at least the non-comms do), but the FCC is apparently understaffed, or doesn't have enough teeth, or something. Plus the stronger commercial stations don't seem bothered much. There's a strong 102.5 Latino pirate originating in/around East Orange but it doesn't seem to hurt Fresh 102.7, at least not anywhere on I-280. And Streetz 96.5 doesn't hurt WQXR in my neighborhood -- not sure about downtown Newark though.
 
Maybe Streetz 96 moved its transmitter to a different building or changed its power. It was much stronger last summer when I could get it in Yonkers and Jamaica. It's overmodulated, and bleeds on to WQXR in Newark.

I'm curious as to why the pirate stations are only in Newark, and there aren't any in Camden, which is much more dangerous than Newark.

The legal stations do care, the FCC doesn't.

Isnt there a tall building in Camden? It will be perfect to put a transmitter up there. But if they do a dance pirate, then we will be lucky if it lasts a week.
 
There may be a better chance for a dance station to last longer in Asbury Park than Camden since some parts of Asbury is still abandoned ;D
 
Apparently dance pirate stations have been getting raided like flies, and from a previous post, "corporates dont like dance pirate stations."

OK so at least they do go after those. Some posts on this board lead me to believe that they don't raid any pirates.
 
Can you find a NAL about the last pirate station raided which had a dance format? Mid West Clubber's pirate has been on for a while. Energy 98 was "fined" but the fine was never paid, Mikeo could have kept it on the air and still be on today. Not too many dance fans want to set up a pirate station.

Well, for example the recent "Hot 97" here in Binghamton is no longer on 97.7, and it was only on for 2 days. I'm still trying to find an FCC raid on this station, it's just weird that only 2 days, and then no longer?
 
What about the 96.7 Party pirate? Was that a real pirate station, or did someone just override the input of the WQXR translator on 96.7?

The problem is, is that pirates such as Streetz 96, are too strong of signals and travel up to 30 air miles and interfere with stations on that same frequency or adjacent to that frequency, such as Wired 96.5 and 96.3 QXR
