Most pirates sound the same

Maybe they only leave them alone in the big metro areas.

The problem is, is that pirates such as Streetz 96, are too strong of signals and travel up to 30 air miles and interfere with stations on that same frequency or adjacent to that frequency, such as Wired 96.5 and 96.3 QXR

And the stations that are being interfered with don't complain & the FCC doesn't shut them down--amazing!

you're telling me how about that pirate in Paterson that's still on Roadblock I think it's called

You'd think today with the sorry state that radio is in that the big guys would complain.

I don't live in the NY area, but it sure seems like there are tons of pirates there and nobody cares.

How many of them have had 16 straight losing seasons? :)

That's why I would think they'd complain more. Their already sorry investments are being further watered down.

Roadblock Radio has two frequencies broadcasting the same station, one in Paterson on 90.5 and 90.1 in Newark, East Orange, and Irvington. Their 90.1 transmitter has moved from the top of their promotions headquarters to the top of a telephone pole and then a top of an abandoned house. I'm not sure if they were antenna-hopping around in Paterson.

I guess pirate stations dont bother me as much as AM IBOC

AM IBOC is garbage.

Hi,
My name is Alan, I run a pirate dance station in Seattle and haven't had a problem with anyone. Then again I do not interfere on the dial and keep it clean and smooth. I have been on the air 24/7 for just over 9 months. I only have 1.5 watts at the transmitter going into a simple 5/4 wave dipole (I don't want my apt mgr to see it), around 6 watts ERP... on a good day, with a good breeze behind it's back. Good receivers with good antennas can pick me up at 6 miles distance very clearly in good line of sight areas. Consider too that here in Seattle we have tall buildings as well as lots of tall hills to get around. I do hope to get an LPFM license for the station. Soon it will be slightly revamped to 'market' it better- all I will say on that for now.

Best of luck to those that keep it 'clean' and FUN again on the radio dial!
-DJ Alan ;D

BTW: You can hear my station via peercast stream. Go to peercast.org, load the peercast client, click play link for 'The WHORE 101.9 FM Seattle' on the peercast 'Yellow Pages'. As I write this, the peercast tracker service is down- the 'Yellow Pages' are not visible. This happens occasionally and should be running smooth within a day or two.

Maybe the corporates should sell their properties and operate as pirates. Since very few pirates get busted anyway this could be the best way to make money in todays economy.

I wonder what C-89.5 has to say about your pirate dance station.

I don't listen to pirate stations in New York City. Over the years, pirate radio has been a staple of illegal broadcasting for example, take Hank Hayes and Jim Nazium, they were great jocks at a pirate station in Brooklyn, NY WHOT 91.5 where they are playing oldies, just like CBS-FM as well as fake jingles. WHOT was a clone of CBS-FM when it was an oldies station, they pulled the plug in 1989 for FCC reasons.

I've never listened to the "Hot One" WHOT when it was on 91.5 while WNYE-FM was running public affairs and NPR. That was the 80's when Hank & Jim was on that station doing the overnights for years.

Look what happened now, they are running caribbean, hardcore rap and others, please stop the madness or else Captain Jack Sparrow is waiting for you!

…Nick, and all,
C89 really has an audience that is spread far and wide due to the transmitter power they have, plus they seem to angle the suburban kids though that could be a fact of just being a high school station that they may keep everything a bit ‘homogenized and squeaky clean’.

My format is different than C89's. I play most of the hot dance and pop hits on the charts, but then take on a more techno approach. I also mix in more rock (alty stuff- Talking Heads, Beastie Boys, The Killers, Ting Tings) than C89 does. My format also mixes in a few top 70's disco, 80's new wave- electro and even an occasional older prog rock track- anything that fits well with a mainly techy mix. The audience I want to reach is the 'young (or forever young), urban majority' types and Seattle's gay community which happens to include a lot of the former. The shiny new condos of downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill are ripe with these technically savvy, trend setters and there is an opportunity to provide another option that is just not on the dial right now (well... besides my station).

C89 also has like 3000 watts of power off of Cougar Mountain (one of the main transmitter sites for the Puget Sound area), they cover the Sound nicely. I on the other hand, am just a very small blip in the pond and only cover Capitol Hill and the downtown area... and even that is spotty in areas due to our skyscrapers and hills.

I am a fan of C89 myself and I know and have worked with a few former Nathan Hale High School/KNHC students. I love the station and in particular, the fact that they are teaching future broadcasters the ropes... (hopefully they spend at least one quarter teaching students how to make Top Ramen '100 Different & Exciting Ways') ;)

I also actually plan on telling my listeners to call C89 during their pledge drives, and to donate online through their website… as part of my service to the community. C89 like many other organizations rely on donations to keep going, providing public service announcements is a main focus of my station. I know I’ll take a few listeners away from them locally and that is another reason why I want to make sure that the listeners I do take still support them. Plus I am not kidding myself- my listeners will always continue to listen to C89 when they are out of my stations small broadcast range. As for the online listeners I have--- everywhere--- they’ll get that same message too--- to support C89.

Diversity on the dial is good too and since our formats and audience targets are different enough, C89 and The WHORE both compliment each other in a way. In Seattle we also have KEXP ( kexp.org ) at 90.3 FM, probably one of the most STELLAR examples of what radio can be, not a ‘dance station’ per se, but FREAKIN’ STELLAR!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!
DJ Alan

My stream is up again... If you like a mix of Dance, Pop, and pop rock... check it out.

You can hear my station via peercast stream. Go to peercast.org, load the peercast client, click play link for 'The WHORE 101.9 FM Seattle' on the peercast 'Yellow Pages'. Some Windows Media Players seem to have problems playing the mp3 stream (WTF??) but WinAmp works GREAT and sounds awesome. Artist and titles appear on the player.

Peercast is CLEAN! No pop-ups, ads, spyware or any problems. It is kind of like 'green networking' in the sense that it does not require some huge server eating power and does not create a massive bandwidth overload for internet backbone connections. It does use some of your unused upload to pass along the stream to another listener but it is only the audio that is passed along. You are going to love Peercast.

I hope you like the station!
Have a GREAT DAY and HAPPY STREAMING!!! ;D

Good. How about coming to Newark, NJ or Brooklyn and start this station here

What--you're not happy with all the pirates you have there now?

Not really, it gets sickening that this caribbean pirate on 87.9 is killing Pulse 87. At least for "the whore" it would knock off one out of the 100 caribbean stations that are around here.

Then again.......97.7 in Binghamton is back on, but now they are "WOUT" a.k.a. Out 97 playing dance music. Since I cant pick up a signal in my home stereo I took the drive up the Greater Binghamton Health Campus and is super clear. It is still coming from Bingo's east side very strong. Tony, if u read this, Im sending u the video aircheck of this station.
