Most pirates sound the same

I agree not all pirates are bad. Shortwave station WBCQ on 7.415 / 5.110 and 9.330 owned by former pirate Alan Weiner programs what he calls "the last free speech radio station" programs a wide variety of music, religion, tech talk, and commentary programs. Alan is legitimate but refers to WBCQ as a legal pirate station. Sells programming blocks to anyone who wants to pay to get on the air worldwide with a message, a regular show or whatever floots your boat. Much like all of us here who have a diversity of opinions. Except this on'es on the air. He air's Amos & Andy, This week in Amateur radio , The QSO Show, Alan Weiner Worldwide , Marion's attic ( a show with music played from 78RPM records & cylinders. A rock n roll show buy a guy who calls hiimself Fred Flintstone plus a few religious programs and Opinion shows. It's always interesting & you cannot get that type of variety on commercial FM radio owned by Corporate entities.

So before you classify all pirates check out the website wbcq.com and check out the stations. It's certainly not mundane radio and the FCC lends him a friendly ear and support.
The FCC has also allowed him to use an FM frequency up in Maine.

About Hank & Jim

No they are not playing carribean music. They are alive and well on the internet. The guys promote the TOP 40 sound of the 60's. The All New Hank & Jim Show is on every friday night from 8PM till 3AM and plays a variety of top 40 songs from the 60's to the 80's. People all over call in , email, & live chat and make song requests as far away as australia. They also have a show during the week on the offshore radio website. And it's pretty clean. I can name many on air jocks that are not as professional sounding , not as entertaining.

You have to stop and think, Commercial FM radio has become mundane , too formatted and well,,pretty boring over the years. Due to the FCC license structure, it's hard & sometimes impossible to get a station going....soooooooo there are what you call " pirates". Sometimes CBS/ Infinity? Entercom/Bonneville etc cannot or will not program anything creative or interesting. Some us are just enjoy something different to listen to. I was a program director and announcer for a lot of years. Commercial radio since being gobbled up by the suits in this country is boring and lacks creativity which is why people like Rush & Hannity and the talk formats can just capture the ratings . In Washington DC. WTOP the news station is numero uno consistantly..... that's because of the dull programming on the music fm's, not to mention the jocks who sound like pre programmed bots.

If commercial creativity was sex in this country, the birthrate would be non existant.

I know a lot of you guys on here dump on the so called pirates, you need to stop and think that only when people dare to think " outside the box" are new innovations, products and ideas cultivated and consequently sometimes that makes your life better.

I think most of the "dumping" that takes place is with the specific pirates found in the NYC area. Having 47 varieties of Caribbean programming plus several more spanish-language religious pirates equates to even less "format diversity" than the bland commercial FM dial. Not to mention that most of these pirates are operated as commercial operations, first and foremost, instead of for the love of the medium or the music.

The pirate stations just keep on cropping up, and more and more of them are going onto first-adjacent channels to major NYC stations! 106.9 recently boosted its power significantly or perhaps moved its transmitter, as I've been getting a killer signal from them in the past few days, with no interference from 106.7 or 107.1. Today I also caught a new Caribbean pirate on 102.5, also with a strong signal....coming in over the HD hash of 102.7. 96.1 is another pirate that's been coming in recently with a huge signal. On my HD radio in Queens, I'm getting these stations with almost 100% signal strength!

I've also caught a pirate on 107.1 fighting it out with both The Peak and The Breeze here in Queens, and of course, the pirate on 101.5 which I receive as a mishmash with NJ 101.5 and Party 105!

Additionally, in the past week, I've been getting a pirate with a really strong signal on 91.9, playing Russian pop/techno music. Musically it actually sounds very similar to the Russian station that was on 87.7 before Pulse signed on
