MOViN Bites the Dust

Another MOViN is going away... WMVN/St. Louis is flipping to Sports/Talk on January 1. How much time do you think KMVK has?

I have never heard of this station before, care to elaborate any? Besides where does all this info come from anyways, any websites you guys can suggest reading (well besides this one, lol)

Movin is a relatively new station, and has a 1.7 25-54.

Contrast that with heritage stations like KRLD at a 1.9, KZPS at a 1.8 and the Edge at a 2.0. Why no wondering on when those failing stations are goingto flip?

And let's remember, that while they're creeping up 25-54, their target is young women.

And with adults 18-34, while yes they get their butts beat by KISS, KISS is also down a couple of tenths in the last book...Since every ratings point is potentially worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, they're probably making some money...Or at least costing KISS money...

And when you break out the 18-34 numbers, they have a 2.1. Just to compare that with some other (adult) female skewing stations, Wolf has a 3.1. Mix a 2.8, KVIL a 2.6, KLTY a 2.3. Now think about how long those stations have been around and how long Movin's been around.

How much time? PLENTY.

These two MOViN's share only the moniker. To suggest that KMVK's fate is predicted by the demise of the St. Louis station is uninformed folly. They are vastly different radio stations. In Dallas, MOViN is considered a "Rhythmic AC", and the St. Louis MOViN is "Hot AC". Here is a sample hour from both - yesterday at 11AM

WMVN-ST. LOUIS 11 AM 9-21-08

GNARLS BARKLEY Crazy
MRAZ, JASON I'm Yours
CHERISH Do It To It
MADONNA 4 Minutes
STONE TEMPLE PILOTS Interstate Love Song
PINK Just Like A Pill
O.A.R. Shattered (Turn The Car...)
EVE Let Me Blow Ya Mind
ONEREPUBLIC Stop And Stare
KID ROCK All Summer Long
LAVIGNE, AVRIL My Happy Ending
NICKELBACK Rockstar

KMVK-DALLAS 11 AM 9-21-08

RUN DMC It's Tricky
PUSSYCAT DOLLS Buttons
C & C MUSIC FACTORY Gonna Make You Sweat
TIMBALAND The Way I Are f/Keri Hilson
DJ JAZZY JEFF/FRESH PRINCE Summertime
FURTADO, NELLY Promiscuous
TIMMY T One More Try
BEYONCE Baby Boy f/Sean Paul
PRETTY POISON Catch Me (I'm Falling)
OUTKAST Roses
CAREY, MARIAH Dreamlover
NEW EDITION Cool It Now
RIHANNA Disturbia

I would prefer the St. Louis station to the one here in Tx. I am sick of the types of playlist you listed. MORE ROCK! LESS RAP!!!!

I, personally, can't stand 00's rhythmic CHR mixed with 70s-90s CHR. It's like mixing Fall Out Boy with Lynyrd Skynyrd - ie a really bad rock station. Hopefully Dallas will get an FM sports or talk.

hey whats up!? i live here in st louis... and all i got to say is finally the movin' station here in st louis is goin away.... b/c it sounds just like a top 40 station.. their moniker is MORE THEN 'Y' & MORE THEN 'Z' (kyky 98.1 (a/c) & z107.7 (top 40)) here in st louis... the 3 stations sound the same.... the station where our movin' is leaving (101.1) is finally getting a ESPN affiliate on the FM side.. b/c right now its on the AM side of the dial & just before sunset the signal goes really down where i'm at here in st louis

I think the point, more than anything, is that Movin' gets similar numbers in St. Louis and Dallas. Even though the two stations don't sound exactly the same, which is by design as Movin' is catered to its individual markets, the concept hasn't worked much of anywhere.

In just over a year, they've gotten a 1.7 25-54. Within striking distance of long established stations like KRLD, KZPS and KDGE.

Hasn't worked much? It's working fine. Just look at the cost differential. How much do you think it costs to run KRLD with anchors, reporters, sports guys, etc, verus what it costs to run KMVK with a comparitevly minimal air staff.

If the concept isn't working, then the concept of an all news station isn't working and KRLD needs to be blown up...But yet I don't see people clamoring for that...

I think people are letting their personal taste color their opinions...

If a 1.7 25-54 is your definition of success, what do you call a failure? KZPS, by the way, has adjusted its format three times in as many years. That's not exactly a station I'd want above me, even if I'm within striking distance. KDGE, on the other hand, is doing better than Movin' in 25-54 by going after 18-34. Again, not a station I'd want above me in that demo.

Remember that all news is the only format that has a power ratio of greater than 2:1 nationally. While I don't consider KRLD to be all news, it will have a higher power ratio than the music stations. So, it should bill substantially more than Movin', even with similar 25-54 numbers. Also, you're correct that no one has been clamoring for KRLD to be blown up. However, it's been stated more-than-once on this board that KRLD is likely to have to move to FM before too long if it's to survive. In fact, I seem to remember you even implied this yourself at least once!

I think people are letting their personal taste color their opinions...

I'd say you definitely are! Seriously, I'll be the first to admit that I don't get "Movin'." However, I'm not necessarily supposed to. I'm male, which means I'm automatically not in the station's target demo!

Someone should try a "Movin Country" format. Just happy upbeat country songs without all the slow stuff. :)

Sad part is that I'd probably sample it occasionally throughout the day! :D

Was done in Washington DC back in the early 90s. No sucess

I think someone should try it again, cause country aint like it used to be. The upbeat songs sound more country than the slower ones.
