Actually,
Not only did Tony BRistol get back to me about the night job, I spoke with him a few times and I got an on air try out on a Saturday 2-7 shift in May. I found him to be very nice and so was Davey Morris. Tanya Cruise actually trained me on the equipment and before all this happened, I knew no one in the building. Just for the record, Citadel Providence has a great
soda/snack machine.

And that makes 1 of 32,017 packages. Any others? Maybe it's just my imagination.

Re: MOVED UP & OUT

Don't post here much anymore, but I keep an eye on things. Providence was a great sring board to move up the ladder. #34 market, close to Boston & NYC and some really good veterans to listen to and learn from. Although NE wasn't my cup of tea, the time I got to spend there was invaluable and led to my current job. Thanks RI.

I second an earlier post--I received a lot of tapes for openings at my station and _very few_ stood out. In fact, 99.9% of them were .... well, just THERE. Bland, basic, or just plain bad. I recognize some names of people posting here and I've heard their tapes and they fall into the 99.9% group.

The bottom line: if you didn't get a callback then in the recipient's eyes your tape needs work.

I'll be honest, connections do play a part in hiring--especially when it comes to references. Forget references you supply us. If the hiring person knows someone else at a station you've worked at, chances are we're calling our friend. But, boys club being the only reason to hire....no way. If you suck, you suck. A boys network couldn't help you even in that case.

I wonder, if this good ole boy network does exist, please give examples on how Kerry Collins got into Pro. How did the other poster who claimed to have had a shift last May?

Kerry Collins was basically a supernova of things working together. A) as you can hear onair, he destroys (thats a good thing)... and B) he has great connections. A+B=Job...

Kerry had the connections, which was the "breakaway"...and his onair persona was the "slam dunk". He drove it to the hole. Hahaha

But I mean, cmon, we've all heard people onair that make you angry that they got a gig. I'm not the jealous type, but when the talent intros Gavin Degraw and says he is Jesse McCartney...that person should not have a full-time slot.

Point taken but although I'm not in the job market now, one thing that always bugged me is that a lot of those tapes are coming from people with potential that are working at stations where they're not allowed to be anything but basic. I think your answer will be to find a station where their talents can be better displayed, but in many cases you're probably judging not only the person but also the station he's working at.

Bet it took you 10 minutes to figure out how to get the soda out first time around... ;) And the cupcakes run out all too often...

That's why he didn't get the job.It was the dreaded soda machine acid test.If you can't get a Coke out in 6 seconds or less you're not hired.

Re: MOVED UP & OUT

Ditto. Providence was a great market even for us career weekenders. I also owe New England, and B101 in particular, a great debt. It helped me as well... I just signed on to do weekends in a major market and I couldn't be happier!

By the way, Courtney Young was undoubtedly the nicest person of anyone I ever worked with at 75 Oxford St. I'm sure they miss you!
