MT. WILSON FIRE THREAT?

It's worth noting that the "CBS2" tower hasn't actually been broadcasting CBS2 since the DTV transition back in June. KCBS-DT took over the former KCAL-DT channel 43 facilities on one of the Mount Alta towers, so the 1000-footer has only 93.1 and 93.9 on it at the moment.

It's hard to tell from the towercam pictures 2500 miles away, but it looks like things were brought at least somewhat under control near Mount Wilson overnight?

During my sleeping in two hour increments, and checking the live video and cam each time, it doesn't appear like the fire has advanced up the mountain much at all overnight. It's reported to still be a mile and a half away.
 
Wondering if, since the digital transition, they still are.

No TV stations moved off Mount Wilson during the DTV transition; in fact, none even switched towers, with the exception of KCBS. A few stations - KSCI 18, KVEA 52 and KRCA 62 - are actually on adjacent Mount Harvard.
 
Scott, are you sure cbs didn't move back over the the tall tower after the cut. i took some pictures last week and i thought i could make out some uhf sections up near the top. it was hard to tell..

Probably the old KCBS-DT 60 from pre-transition.
 
First "Sky Crane" aircraft just got airborne.

This might come down to the last second to save Mt. Wilson.
 
ok... channel 2 is definitely not on old (super tall tower anymore)... and i don't believe 93.9 is anymore either. current license data in fcc fm query shows them back over in the main cluster.. wonder if cbs plans to move 93.1 off the super tall tower and abandon that site all together. if 93.9 and channel 2 are off of it, i think all that is left is 93.1fm. and that is a hell of a site to keep active for one 25 thousand watt fm
 
Breaking News: 6:15

KTLA 5 is reporting that the fire is "a quarter of a mile from Mt. Wilson" There are also firefighters at the transmitter site at Mt. Wilson at this time.

KTLA is also reporting that air drops are expected to begin on Mt. Wilson "sometime later this morning," but an anchor also reported that there was discussion of drops causing damage to transmitter sites & buildings due to weight issues. Excellent video from the CBS site, showing several firetrucks on the Chopper 2 feed.

Fire rigs are seen leaving the summit of Mt. Wilson, but despite what KTLA says, doesn't look like flames nearby at this time; at least no where near the summit. Very clear video, not much smoke, showing vehicles, microwave antennas, etc. and three firetrucks leaving.
 
CBS 2 now says flames are "getting closer" but still "a mile and a half" away from the summit. (KTLA says "a half mile.")

Someone at CBS 2 told Amelia Earhart that the elevation of Mt. Wilson was 7500 feet. Not quite. It's 5507, or close to it, I believe.

Boy, tough to do morning news when your transmitter sites are about to be consumed, I guess.

CBS 2 says that while flames are still a mile and a half away and there is some smoke, Mt. Wilson is "safe" for now but added, "As we heard this morning, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when flames get here to the summit of Mt. Wilson."

Correct. It's more of a ridgeline than a single peak.
