MTV is 40

As of yesterday, the iconic MTV turned 40 years old. However, I did not know of them doing anything to commemorate it. I know that for both their 30th and 35th anniversaries, they aired the original first hour of MTV. But I didn’t know of them doing anything this year. I remember on the 35th anniversary, that’s when Vh1 Classic became the ever-failing MTV Classic, which I literally haven’t checked in ages. Because it’s so stale, and last I heard, it was one of the least-watched cable channels, and I’m sure it still is. Did MTV do anything at all to commemorate the 40th anniversary? Maybe they will at least mention it at this year’s VMAs, the only music programming they currently have.

I'm not sure about MTV itself, but for SiriusXM subscribers, all 4 surviving original MTV VJs (including Martha Quinn, who is not a regular host on Big 80s on 8) did a special featuring the first 2 hours of MTV with stories and interviews. It is still available online and on the app.

That's the plan. Here's what they've posted at their website:

MTV will have several exciting new collaborations leading up to the VMAs on Monday, August 26. As the show approaches its 40th anniversary, MTV will celebrate throughout the month of August with music-focused activations featuring world-renowned partners.

The fact is that MTV is not the kind of channel it was 40 years ago. It's merely a platform for a bunch of reality shows and movies. No VJs. No MTV News. No real channel identity. So they really can't commemorate the 40th in anything other than the VMAs.

The first thing I did circa 1980 (when cable came to our house) was block MTV. I have never regretted it.

They have put together a groovy logo for their 40th anniversary, and a look back at all the shows that people once watched:

But like everything else, it's all online content.

Walmart and I'd guess other stores as well have MTV T-shirts with their old slogan Music Television on them for sale. For adults who remember it from the 80's that may make sense. But they also have those kinds of T-shirts for kids and teens as well, who never saw it when they actually had music, and probably think "Where's the music???"

I still watch MTV Classic as I like to see old music videos I haven't seen in years along with the main MTV. MTV doesn't really want to celebrate how old they are they didn't do anything for the 25 years other than when it was VH1 Classic along with 30 years which VH1 Classic aired 24 hours of 1ST day that MTV was on the air.

John Mayer recently made a music video that resembles it's broadcast MTV and VH1 in the early 1990's. Yes I remember John Mayer used to be one of the artists who had his songs on MTV and VH1 in the 2000's before the labels decided to go straight to YouTube, Internet Radio and Music on demand apps in 2006-2008 timeframe.

MTV, as others have mentioned, barely resembles the original product. MTV twenty years later barely resembled the original product. MTV 40 years later barely resembles the 2001 product. So actually they are doing it right! Change and adaptation is essential in today’s media world. However, I do miss Bow Wow Wow videos.

True but if one wants to talk about MTV today it's going to be about shows within the Paramount+ app or within discussions on how ViacomCBS would bring this brand to this decade. Also if one wants to look for music now it's going to be on the Iheart and Tunein apps, Spotify and YouTube.

Well, it turns out there's a first this year for the MTV Video Music Awards. I know it's common for these award shows to be broadcast on several channels, which it is and they've done this before, but for the first time ever, it's actually being shown on broadcast TV. It's gonna be on the CW.

Whether its the first or second year The CW is airing it, it will give exposure to the fifth network behind the Big Four (MyNetworkTV doesn't count and fifth as in the commercial networks, PBS is non-comm).
