MTVU?

I see that in May on this year Cheddar acquired MTV Networks on Campus channel MTVU and have converted it to CheddarU. So MTVU is now CheddarU in colleges/universities. However MTVU was for some reason also available on cable TV in the US even though it had college-centric programming. What does MTVU show now as its not available in colleges anymore? The website is still very college-centric.

Another reason why Viacom is in so much trouble. They create a channel for colleges, sell the main distribution platform, but continue to run the channel as a digital network. My cable company doesn't carry it, even though they carry all of the other MTV networks. Other than Nickelodeon, there is no real creative vision taking place at Viacom. They seem to be going through the motions. TTBOMK they're doing what they've always done, just with a lot fewer viewers. But that's also the situation with most of their other channels. Let's put it this way: If they're doing something new or different, no one knows about it, so it doesn't matter.

Nick 2 is just the opposite coast feed of Nickelodeon, depending on where you live. If you're on the West Coast (like myself), "Nick 2" is the east coast feed, and for the east coast, "Nick 2" is the west coast feed.

does this affect Dish and DirecTV or will they retain their satellite west coast feeds.

What is MTVU on cable used to be VH Uno (Spanish VH1) As VH Uno it was mostly available in Hispanic packages on digital cable. MTVS (Now Tr3s) was the other.

Viacom bought the campus network, CTN in 2002 and rebranded it MTVU in ‘04. Initially, MTVU was only available on the campus system (The old CTN). It also streamed online a decade ago so people could watch off campus.

They wanted to expand it off campus, thus VH Uno was switched to a simulcast of MTVU.

So it’s basically it’s the same thing as before, without the campus network distributing it to colleges. Doing MTV’s job playing new Music Videos. Some are pulled from the NickMusic (MTV Hits) library.

They probably should rebrand it to MTV Music (Which is used on digital network in the UK in specific) MTV has not had a fulltime music video network for current music since MTV Hits became NickMusic.

They use MTV Live and MTV Classic to show VMA Nominees, PUSH performances and TRL replays. They also run a block of Urban videos on MTV Live to keep the “MTV Jams” brand alive (That network was repackaged into BET) A general music brand could maybe make it more marketable to cable systems, as very few carry it.

Does MTVU play mostly current hit music videos or is it mostly indie type artist videos with a few current hits thrown in? They should rebrand it to MTV Music like they have CMT and CMT Music. I see MTV Music doing more as a brand than Nick Music/MTVU.

It’s a mix of Pop, Hip Hop, R&B and Indie. Some videos have a popup box with facts about the song and the video, occasional network bumpers.

In it’s prime, MTVU was very heavy on the Indie and Alternative and Alternative Hip-Hop. Even some 80s and 90s videos would show up on occasions. Had news updates from CBS and later ABC. It had it’s own awards show, it’s own video premieres, etc. It slowly evolved to what it is now in recent years.

They often pull videos from NickMusic (Cleaner edits) identifying them with a (NickMusic Version) next to the title.

All of these networks were created for a new thing called digital cable back in 1999-2000. Almost of them rebranded since.

VH1 Soul (BET Soul), VH1 Country (CMT Music), VH1 Classic (MTV Classic), VH1 Mega Hits (Logo), MTVX (BET Jams), MTVS (Tr3S), VH Uno (MTVU), MTV Hits (NickMusic), NickToons TV (Nicktoons), Noggin (Nick Jr), Nick GAS (TeenNick), BET on Jazz (BET Her), BET Gospel

Would they not be better replacing it with something, surely even Nick Jr 2 like they have in the UK with repeats of Peppa Pig and other preschool shows would do quite well?

Nick 2 is basically the opposite feed of what you "normally" would get. So for me in Minnesota Nick 2 would be the "west coast" version. Its redundant and cable systems can use it for other services.

I dont understand why "Nick Jr Too" would be something to put on there when its the same concept as what is being discontinued. With video on demand if you want to wacth peppa Pig ad nauseum thats what VOD is for.

If you remember the old Box (Video Jukebox Network), its assets were purchased by Viacom in the early 2000s, and merged into it the already-existing MTV 2. Basically with the merger of the two channels, newly-formed MTV 2 finally became available on cable systems, taking over The Box's old channel slots.

For a period of time, the channels that carried The Box had their own vote to air system locally for MTV-2. I believe this was same system The Box used for PPV ordering.

Basically you would go to the MTV-2 website, select the local channel by zip and would be given a list of videos to vote up to play next.

MTV-2 appropriately called it “Box Block” and only ran on the cable and OTA channels that ran The Box prior.

The national feed of MTV-2 still had it’s own programming during those hours.

WOCK-CA in Chicago and WMKE Milwaukee ran Box Block locally and the DirecTV feed of the national MTV-2 when Box Block was not on.

The national MTV-2 had a similar online voting show called Control Freak, but it was slightly different in regards to videos and graphics. It had quite the following. In Canada, CHUM (MuchMusic) had a similar program, later a fulltime network called PunchMuch. People would send a text message with a code to vote from a list of videos scrolling on the screen.
