MundoFox TX market possibilities

That being said, I'm surprised that MundoFox is not enlisting the help of its O&Os to carry or support the new network -- the only Fox O&O carry MundoFox is MyNet station WDCA in Washington, as a subchannel. In most other major markets served by a Fox O&O (including New York, Chicago, Philly and Houston), MundoFox is carried on a LPTV. And without the support of a Fox affiliate, it'll be difficult for MundoFox to get on cable unless its LPTV affiliates have the money to rent channel space.

It's already on cable in New York and Chicago.

In the RGV, MundoFox has ended up on XHRIO. This marks the second time in a decade that some people will lose Fox OTA to a Spanish language network. Fox is still available via low power KFXV but it seems that some areas around Brownsville have a hard time picking up the signal. There is supposed to be a translator (KXFX) in Brownsville but I'm not sure if it will help. It's authorized for .5 kW.

Though I believe it was already on cable in those cities when WPXO and WOCK, respectively, carried the America CV network, which has gone dark to make way for MundoFox.

Have you even looked at their program schedule? MundoFox also has prime time dramas, game shows and Fox News in Spanish.

BTW-- KNVO used to carry XHRIO on one of their digital subchannels. Has that changed? Or perhaps Fox is on a digital subchannel of XHRIO? Time to rescan to look for changes.

Fred....I understand Fox is now on KFXV, a low powered outlet on channel 67(!). I had heard that XHRIO wasn't pulling any numbers worth a darn, especially for local programming. Perhaps the fact that English programming is being shunted off to this "channel" confirms that. I believe there's also an LP in Brownsville. Cable and satellite carriage for Fox appears to be unaffected.

You're forgetting the kind of hardball News Corp. plays. Must-carry is almost irrelevant to a major content provider like News Corp. because they can simply tell the cable cos. to carry MundoFox if they want any of News Corp.'s other networks. Why do you think anybody carries Fox Business?

In fact, I bet that "all-or-nothing" provision is already in many contracts between News Corp. and cable cos.; if not it'll probably be imposed the next time the contract comes up for renewal.

IIRC-- KFXV is what KNVO was using to feed XHRIO and the RGV cable headend.
Its analog channel was 67. It now transmits HDTV on channel 20.

Spanish TV is where its at in the Valley. Even TBN flipped its digital channels and put Enlace on the .1 and TBN USA on .2 giving Enlace the plum single digit cable channel.

Yes I have and It's nothing new with the exception of Fox News in Spanish.

They dropped the Fox feed on 48.3 sometime last year. It was blank for months until earlier this year when they put LATV on it. XHRIO does not have any subchannels and IF Fox were to end up on a subchannel I would think they would have done it by now. There really isn't any indication that will happen. Their Facebook page says they hope to resolve the reception issues in Cameron County within the next 24 hours. I'm not exactly sure what they plan to do.

Except that if it's a LPTV station, which by law is not eligible for must-carry -- the only way they can appear on cable is if they rent space or, if a larger, regular station is running it, it's included as part of that station's carriage agreement. But the fact that most of its affiliates are on LPTV will hurt the network mainly because of non-eligibility for must-carry.

And only one Fox O&O is involved with MundoFox -- WDCA in Washington, which is carrying MundoFox on a subchannel and will very likely appear on cable. And with few exceptions, most of its affiliates are LPTVs that are either locally-owned or owned by LPTV broadcasters such as Mako Communications or KM Communications.

Actually it's between the non-elegible station and the cable or satellite provider.
Time Warner RGV carries a number of non-eligible signals including LPTVs and foreign signals. They're there because TWC thought it might lose subscribers if it didn't include them. I doubt that they're renting channel space. It might be a trade-out with the station giving Time Warner Cable a healthy number of free spots.

Fred, they just added an SD version of Fox on 2.2 a few hours ago. Not sure why they waited this long. You would think they had plenty of time to prepare...
