Music of your Life

What tends to be the bone of contention on these boards is the issue of which kinds of music...have aged out of commercial radio's ability to present.
Other things...are just too narrow.
Question: Is there a particular age group which is most responsive to pledge drives?
I have entered it, even though most of my listening is not to terrestrial radio.

Mike Sheridan made an interesting observation. The "elderly" are, indeed conditioned to listening to AM..especially at night. Do you have any idea how much available cash these folks have in reserve? They will spend it...and it's a boatload.

Do you remember Herb Jepko's Nite Caps show? For a long time it was on KSL, out of Salt Lake City, then went to Mutual for a time. That was a compelling little program. Herb raked in the money for a good long time...Something like that style of show..with light hearted conversation coupled with the MOYL musical fare would do well on so many of these night signals. And heck, the stations can have the programming..one could clear many many markets with millions of potential listeners. How could that not be viable? There was a great guy in Tampa Bay at WDAE when I was there..Don Beckman..he did just that..and of all the personalities on that station (including Gary Burbank, Johnaton Greene and others) at remotes, they all wanted to meet Don.

The "elderly" in pain could be in the market for pain relief products. Retirement homes, reliable banks, reasonable car insurance, personalized gifts, cruise packages, bus trips, even all night psychics would be able to buy time...

Hell I'd do it..who do I call at Dial Global or whoever it is? I'm up all night..I have an 800 number, and ISDN..I can round up a batch of Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, and Les Paul records..I have a phone hybrid..even a delay unit for those foul mouthed old bast*rds when they ge to gabbing about thier days in the service...I would love it.

Also..might be advantageous to provide the audio via a simple Direct TV or dish network system, and just let the affiliates pick up and use the programming anytime they want...just let the providers know when they ran it, and what market.

No..it's not sexy, and it wont get any groupies..nor will it net the jock a bar tab, or free tee shirts..but, C'mon there MUST be some money in this age bracket.

Jeff, I think you are on to something! You took my idea and expanded on it very nicely.

Be careful when mentioning my name, I don't mind but it does bring out the nay sayer's!

Jepko's show paved the way for Larry King to take over the overnights, possibly leading into the barrage of news/talk stations now. After all, after 1980, AM was not much good for music anymore, except if it *was* MOYL or similar.

Jepko was heard on KSL in the west & WHAS in the east (although I enjoyed Joe Donovan's WHAS oldies show better), at a time before Mutual linked the country. This was when many listeners were "DXers" to a point. :)

"This is That was Mutual, your news and sports radio network".
Rollye James has spoken lengthly about the Herb Jepko Nitecaps, but her website is so jam packed with archives, could not find what we wanted to post.
We found this link to her final show on XM, but after painstakingly going through it, could not find the segment in question.
Enter the URL directly into a streaming MP3 player such as Winamp if your browser will not load it properly.

I read an article about Herb Jepko somewhere but being in the east, I never had the pleasure of hearing him. It was a very interesting story and well worth a read by anyone interested in "people radio".

We carried MOYL and Larry King on WKWF in Key West in the 80's. At that time you would switch the feed manually. I forgot, being the new kid on the block (21 at the time) I was in fear, the announcer in the FM booth laughed, walked in the booth, opened the mic and said, "We interrupt the current program to bring you the following program". I guess you had to be there ;D

They did lose their satellite service and switched to internet delivery about a week ago...giving the stations about 48 hours notice. I don't know if the move was related to finances, but my guess would be yes.
