MUSIC ON 106.9

Perhaps it was an error of some kind, but I heard OH WHAT A NIGHT (DECEMBER 1963)
by FRANKIE VALLI on 106.9 early Sunday morning. That does not seem to fit the 106.9 format. STRRRRRRANGE.

sumulcast-not

that would make absolutely zero sense- why waste a perfectly listenable 100kw
signal?

A remix of that song, featuring more of a dance-ish feel, was pretty popular in late 1994 and early 1995. Maybe that's what you heard.

Let me see if I have this straight...

The Point gets slammed on this board for being repetitive and playing the same songs for 5 years.

Then, when they start to play some songs that they've never played before, they get slammed again because they're doing something different.

I think the Point could hire John Lander and this board would find something wrong with it. But that's just my take on what I read here. Your mileage may vary.
______________

Personally, I don't have that big of a beef with the point. My only complaint is that they seem to play Journey/OMD/Simple Minds all the time. I can think of hundred's of 80s songs that would fit the bill. I remember calling up there on an all request weekend and asking if they could play Dramarama's "Anything,Anything", the DJ said no, but I'll play this great "other" song for ya. sheeeh...

Well said! I have tons of 80's music here at home that would blow the Points Library or playlist to shame. They are leaving out alot of good 80s music that we dont hear anymore.

Drama who???
the BIG problem is lack of variety. the Point has gotten long in the tooth and needs to be shot.

Very typical of request shows. We will play it if we want to play it. Therefore defeating the purpose of an all request show. It's what WE want to hear, not the programming or on air staff. Hence the all-request moniker. This problem is not isolated to the "Point". What ever happened to the audience. The few stations I worked for did not deny the listeners of what they wanted to hear. Unless it didn't fit the format, or the song was played recently.
If they don't have that deep of a library they need to invest more money in building it. From all repetition we've all heard that wouldn't be a bad idea.

Re: MUSIC ON 106.9/Point slamming

I don't know. When I read "Old Chicago"'s post, I didn't read it as a "slam" on the Point. I read it to be more like "wow...they are playing something new...maybe something is up!" and kind of optimistic (I don't want to speak for O.C. though-that was just my impression of the post). You know how this board gets when there is even the slightest change in Houston radio! That's what it is here for.

Personally, I have to admit, I still have 106.9 as a preset and still fall back on it quite a bit. It does play some good music, but it does feel like I could buy a few "best of the 80s" compilation CDs and get the same effect.

I just think that if they are going to focus on music "from the late 70s to early 90s", then they could dig a little deeper. As an example, I heard "Not Enough Time" by INXS on BOB-FM in Austin this past week when I visited there. I'm not saying the Point should necessarily flip to BOB or JACK (although from reading "Dr. Doom's" posts, it sounds like the Point may very well already be BOB-FM, literally-- lol) I'm just using that song as an example. Mix 96.5 has played some good late 80s/early 90s tunes during its "8:00 Rewind" as well that I have not heard on KHPT.

Anyway, it would be nice to hear a few surprise songs every once in a while. It sounds like Old Chicago was surprised on Sunday morning. Maybe we will hear more things like that. They did add a few 90s songs to the mix (pardon the expression) but nothing really profound...and now these are becoming a little repetitive.

I'd like to see the Point do well. I may be letting myself get swayed by the overall attitude of the board (all I know about radio I've learned off of here), but it feels like they are doing the bare minimum to survive as a radio station...no morning show, limited personality (the DJs usually just mention that you can check the website to find the titles/artists played and that's it), and seemingly limited music library.

I really enjoyed the "all-request lunch" in the past. Are they still doing this? I just haven't had a chance to listen at lunch lately. I hope they are still doing it. I've also heard some good music on the Friday/Saturday night dance mix, but I don't like the beat/mix effect. It would be nice to hear some of those songs (the non-dance version) during the day.

I guess my feeling is that, if they are going to promote themselves as a station that focuses on music ("more music morning show", etc.) then they definitely need to strengthen musically.

Sorry that The Point gets bashed so much. I guess that's the natural tendency for boards like these, and I think it may just be the easiest target out there, unfortunately.

Thanks,
John

Sorry, this is Texas and that's not allowed. All we have is lethal injection.

If ever there were a station that's ripe for the JACK format it's the Point. Trouble is, at this point Cox is not the one to do it. So we're back to square one. It's interesting that the song played on the Point ("Oh What A Night") that was mentioned at the beginning of this thread has been played on KJKK in Dallas since they switched to the JACK format. They're owned by Infinity, and that's not an insignificant point, er, observation.

Re: MUSIC ON 106.9/Point slamming

JohnB I agree Old Chicago's post did not come across as a slam of The Point, but more of a question. Is The Point adding a wider range of music or did the wrong song get programmed into the computor? A slam, no.

John D if The Point was eliminated I don't think you would hear any complaining. It is a station that past it's prime at least two years ago, probably longer than that. Aren't you as a listener tired of terrible radio? Houston has gone from one of the best markets in the country when it came to radio to one of the worst markets in the country over the last twenty years. Many small and medium markets have much more better programmed stations and overall better presentation than Houston. The "good" stations are maybe 10, the "great" stations are, well there are any "great" stations any longer in Houston.

When a station like The Point just keeps on playing the same worn out music it has since October 2000 when the 80's format was hot, it really doesn't matter who is the DJ on KHPT, it is still a tired worn out station. Did you miss dr_doom and his post that the 80's format is finished everywhere in the country except at Cox Radio?

Houston could use a lot of other formats and 80's Hits in a small playlist is not the answer to one of the formats.

Not that I'm trying to endorse XM Radio or anything, but if they would listen to XM Channel 8 (The 80's channel), The Point would hear THOUSANDS of songs that you never hear on their station.

What I found confusing is that in the most recent ratings listings at Radio & Records online, KHPT 106.9 is listed as "Classic Rock." I'm wondering if all-80's stations have always been designated "classic rock" or if the station has recently changed its designation to reflect its excursions into the 70's and 90's...? If you ask most Classic Rock listeners, they will tell you there is a big difference between a format that plays Talk Talk, Kajagoogoo and Depeche Mode and a format that plays Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Bad Company. Are both formats considered classic rock because of the era, regardless of the genre of music?

Curious,
J

Oh What A Night is a oldies song. Since when does the point play oldies?
______________

106.9 is probably closer to Classic Hits than anything. I've seen songs on their MB monitor like BTO and 70's Four Seasons- looks goofy.

It's a hit from 1976. The Point plays hits from 70's - 90's.
______________
