Muzak

Well, that McDonald's must have come to their senses, because as of this morning, they were playing easy listening instrumentals -- the original Muzak we all know and love!

.....Which, as you know, you really can't actually hear anywhere these days unless you have a bunch of the old "Stimulus Progression" LPs! Even Muzak don't run the "old-skool" Muzak any more.

Sorry, popular culture might refer to any old easy-listening instrumental cut as "Muzak", but in reality the name only refers to a certain type of easy-listening instrumental specifically produced by, or in later years for, them. Mantovani, Bert Kaempfert or the 101 Strings are most certainly *not* Muzak. Not even Seeburg 1000, even though the premise was somewhat similar. There is/are still the "Environmental" stream/discs, but for the most part it/they sound/s more like a smooth jazz service (which it currently is) than the beautiful music service it was ~30+ years ago. It changed with the times.

Heck, Walmart is playing Christmas music in their stores (Colorado Springs anyways...) and it's only 11/11.

Heard "December 1963 (Oh What A Night)" on FM1 a few days ago for the first time......Love that song!

Was it the original version from 1975 or the remix that became a hit in 1994?

Lately even some Oldies stations are playing the remix, instead of the original.

The original. In fact I heard "Escapade" (1990) today for the first time on FM1 by Janet Jackson.

So someone at muzak is really mixing things up for FM1...maybe someone new in charge over there?

Probably not, since like always, neither of these are "recent" additions to the regular FM1 codebase.

In my grocery store:

"Hungry Heart", "You Belong to Me" by Carly Simon, a song with the words "You and I" repeated many times, and "I'll Take You There", but probably not the original.

I heard "I'll Take You There" a few weeks ago and it was the Staple Singers from 1972.

Btw...have you heard the "Holiday Pop" channel? Terrible!! Hardly any classics and some crazy remixes. That's the only channel our store has on thru Christmas. There used to be another channel that had more classics. Walmart is playing it this year....sounds much better for sure.

I have lists of songs I heard in my usual grocery store somewhere, but I don't know where right now.

But in another store which gets its music from "corporate", the classical music was not playing. I couldn't quite make out the lyrics when I was checking out but I recognized the style as being either "Raise Your Glass" or "Teenage Dream". Earlier I heard the words "Somebody that I used to know".

At my usual grocery store, "Uptown Girl" and "Our House" (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), and a good classic version of a Christmas song, though I can't remember which one right now.

At the one where classical music is sometimes played, I heard a song with "Breathe" in the lyrics. It could be the title. No, I am not referring to the Faith Hill song.

It's "Breathe" by Telepopmuzik (that breathy-sounding techno-ish "another day, just breathe" cut that came out about 10 years back.)

Was that what you heard?

The mall where I went had good Christmas music. Normally it's some kind of classic hits mess, mostly 80s music. I was tempted to walk inside but it was plenty warm outside and I do like walking outside.

The fast-food place where I went also tends to have junk from the 80s but not quite as loud. And one song I heard was a Christmas song, though it was 50s style rock and roll which to me is just as bad when it's Christmas music. I don't know their supplier but yesterday I heard ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down". On normal days I have heard "Love Shack" and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight".

"Holiday Pop" channel on Muzak is horrible, some R&B junk from the 90's and very few classics...ie Burl Ives, Johnny Mathis, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra..etc..

Wish there was a classics channel for Christmas music instead of the junk our store has this year.

Occasionally the Peanuts music, Jose's Feliz Navidad, and Elvis song or two come on to relieve the day of this other crap that Holiday Pop puts out!

Yesterday in this store: U2 with the lyrics "She moves in mysterious ways" and Lady Gaga with lyrics "Rah, rah, ah-ah-ah-a." At least the volume was at a respectable level. I don't know whether they've adjusted it or I'm just getting more comfortable with it.

My usual store may have had all holiday music on Saturday. I definitely heard a reference to Christmas in a song that was apparently by Elton John. Another song was about winter. Terrible lyrics. It sounded more suited for a AAA station that targets artistic types.
