Muzak

My usual store may have had all holiday music on Saturday. I definitely heard a reference to Christmas in a song that was apparently by Elton John. Another song was about winter. Terrible lyrics. It sounded more suited for a AAA station that targets artistic types.

As far as Elton John goes, he's great with the pop-rock stuff, but that Christmas song you're referring too, is one of the worst for the holiday season. Glad I didn't hear it this season.

Wuzzit "Step Into Christmas"?

They must have run that one at least 150 times on KKCW since Thanksgiving. Enough already!

Yeah. Also enough with Band Aid, John Lennon, Wham's "Last Christmas" and Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas.."....There are hundreds of other beautiful Christmas songs to play besides these constant overplays.

I forgot to mention a fast food place I like. They had Christmas music mixed in. But whatever the format was, and whoever supplies it (whether Muzak or someone else) I have heard "Everybody Have Fun Tonight", "Love Shack", and most recently "Don't Bring Me Down". Whether it is AC or not I can't say, because pretty much everything from the 90s to the present sounds like the same junk.

Actually I don't mind hearing "Happy Christmas" from time to time. (Someone on another thread said something to the effect of it being too sad for them, although I've never really seen it as such, myself, so I guess it's just my own sick mind talking.) But I agree that everybody could probably afford to give the others a rest. Especially the "Band-Aid" and "Wham!" cuts.

Those, and "Christmas Shoes".

I found where I made a note of what I heard in my usual grocery store. "Wild Night" by someone who could be John Mellencamp, and "She's Gone". As for the lyrics of an unfamiliar song I was sure I'd remember, I need to learn to write these things down.

"Could be" John Cougar Mellencamp because it *is* John Cougar Mellencamp! He redid the cut in 1994 as a duet with some girl I've never heard of (and please don't ask me to try to pronounce her name.) Big hit.

That is, unless they ran the original by Van Morrison.

If they did he sure sounds like John Mellencamp.

I have a list of more songs I heard somewhere.

Wait, I just remembered. "Minute by Minute" and "Take a Bow", and one other song I recognized, in my grocery store.

My last visit to J.C. Penney was a miserable experience because "Bang a Gong" by Power Station was played.

"'Betcha By Golly Wow' (but I don't think it was The Stylistics.)"

Probably Aaron Neville. They run his version all the time.

"Been hearing a strange (and terrible) version of 'I Want You Back' lately. It is not the original by the Jackson 5."

I have no idea who this is. It's some teenybopper girl whose shrill, grating voice and insipid, overly-melismatic style I really hope change soon. Much as I hate the things, she really sounds like she could use a few cigarettes every now and again!

"I would definitely say a Caribbean-sounding version of 'I Got You, Babe' is appropriate even for today's AC radio."

I'm fairly sure that's Big Mountain with that lead-singer girl from the Pretenders (can't remember her nameright off the top of my head, but she was the one who once commented on how "Muzak filled the air from Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls".) Don't quote me on that, though.

"More classic adds on FM1 recently: 'Love Train' 1973, 'Midnight Train to Georgia' 1973, 'Nobody Does it Better' 1977 and 'Clocks' 2003."

Again, all of which have been in regular rotation on FM1 for years. Also, I would hardly consider anything from 2003 to be remotely "classic" yet. Might want to give it another 11 years! ;o)
Sheryl Crow I want you back

I keep thinking I'll remember songs or lyrics I hear.

Anyway, these are from the past two weeks.

Two weeks ago:

"Ain't Nobody" by Chaka Khan
"You Can't Hurry Love" Phil Collins
"Just the Way You Are" (not the Billy Joel song)
Lyrics: What I am repeated over and over with a lot of annoying noises, "that's my dog" or "says my dog"

This past weekend:
I think that's Colbie Caillat I Do, they love Colbie. have like 20 plus songs The Little Things is one of them

"You Make My Dreams" by Hall & Oates

Female vocalist--I do I do I do lyrics at the very end (no, it was not ABBA)

There was a really wild song which I think I posted lyrics from before bt didn't see them today. I'll try again.

Probably not, since like always, neither of these are "recent" additions to the regular FM1 codebase.
Yes he is correct they are recent add's to fm1. I have been hearing it for over a decade now, and have a list of over 3,000 songs that I have heard and recognized. I go to the fm1 playlist and write down every song I don't know and Search them and listen. then when I recognize them put them on the list. Waiting for new ones to be added. I know all the ones playing now. Janet Jackson Escapade is a new addition, at least since 2008 when I first got on-line and the playlist.

In my grocery store:

"Hungry Heart", "You Belong to Me" by Carly Simon, a song with the words "You and I" repeated many times, and "I'll Take You There", but probably not the original.
10CC- You and I was added to FM1 in 2012, so that may be it.

Are you sure? If it is her, she sounds horrible! I always tune out that version of "I Want You Back" whenever I hear it on FM-1

Yes that is a recent add, also been hearing "All 4 Love" by Color Me Badd lately.

But the ones (since I like 70's music) that are recents, seem to be Al Stewart music and a few hits from 1973, like "My Maria", "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Will It Go Around in Circles".

"Beginnings" (near album version) and other Chicago music has been heard lately too on FM-1.

Also "Nobody Does It Better" from 1977 (Carly Simon) has been added recently.

And at least they don't play Pat Benatar and Prince. How did those two end up becoming standard on "soft" rock radio?
I was told by someone at Muzak that I could always ask them to turn the Muzak down. I used to have to do that and it got on my nerves and their nerves. But in those days, they ran advertising that they expected to be heard. They don't any more, and I think they've found a good compromise, if that loud new stuff could go.
Add John Mellencamp to that list. Our local AC claims to be "family friendly," yet plays these folks? ::)

OK, Prince might be a bit of a stretch for Muzak (or AC for that matter), but what's "family unfriendly" about John Mellencamp or Pat Benatar? They're both pretty safe acts. It's not like AC music is the Carpenters or Neil Diamond anymore.
On Muzak in some stores I go to, yes it is.

My newspaper described the differences between various adult contemporary radio stations back when "Jack and Diane" was popular. The most conservative AC at the time probably didn't play it, and I don't recall the station being mentioned in the article. but another station wouldn't play it because of the lyrics. I thought the conservative stations wouldn't have played it because it was too loud, and in fact that's part of what defines what is appropriate in offices. Some of this music, regardless of how family-friendly, is too loud.

Getting back to John Mellencamp, "Hurts So Good" showed up on the so-called "Lite" station a few years back. That sounds like it's about S & M. Definitely not family-friendly.

And Pat Benatar is just loud.

Actually Christian Rock/pop goes back to the 60's . The Joy Strings (a salvation Army Band) in 1964 had Now you Know and other songs. Plus Elvis did some Gospel

I'm not going to do it if they miss the whole point.
Background music should enhance the experience
, not interfere with it.

My grocery store has the volume at a reasonable level, and, while the music can be annoying, it's not as bad as what AC radio is doing.

I guess you have the same problem watching movies and TV since music is something that is a big part

It doesn't just enhance, but helps block out sounds. The system in my store is not working right so they turned it way down until the system gets fixed. It has been a real unpleasant experience. When the store is open you hear many people talkin KID SCREAMING registers and cart noise, with nothing to distract you from that. One of the managers was saying how boring it was working without it.

since I saw a youtube link I figure you can post links
http://www.facebook.com/jeff.cooper.5815255/notes

In my notes section I have posted the over 3,000 songs I have heard on FM1 I have to update it with songs from a few months ago.

"10CC- You and I was added to FM1 in 2012, so that may be it."

It's called "For You and I", and I have it on a tape recorded off the Echostar feed in 2005.

Yeah, you can post links here, but linking to Fcbk doesn't do everybody good, since not everybody can access Fcbk. Try posting it to a real (non-Fcbk/non-Ggl) site; if necessary, I can host it for you. (Fire me a private message if you're interested.)
