MY 1073 WYCL

I am sorry to be such a butt

BUT

Rob, you not only don't know about FCC rules and regs, you wrote:

"There 100KW now and reducing to 50K. Doesn't make sense at all."

It is they're not there

cw off the rant mode now

OK Time for my two cents worth.

I have an example where a station dropped from 100kw to 48kw on a SHORTER stick.

WGNE 99.9 formerly, 100kw, licensed to Palataka changed COL to Middleburg and moved from a 1,200’ stick to a 1,000’ stick at 48kw, in Jacksonville and shares the same antenna with sister station 100kw, WEJZ 96.1.

Take a good look at these two maps. Carefully compare the coverage of the 100kw station with the coverage of the 48kw station using the SAME antenna.

WGNE coverage at 48kw:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM1061939.html

WEJZ coverage at 100kw:

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM120105.html

Guess which WGNE facility covers the greatest population.

Guess which WGNE facility is worth more.

Guess which WGNE facility will make more money.

Tell me that wasn’t a smart move to drop power.

Ok, I thought mobile was a mostly black community. BLX is (i think) the #1 station there. I don't know about the suburbs though.

FWB is starting to turn mostly mexican (sigh) seeing more and more of them every day.

Don't know how true is this.

Heres an idea.. put 107.3 on in mobile and have 104.7 move to Hollywood BLVD and let that cover Oaklossia county. (yea.. right)

That station still gets some ratings, believe it or not. (out of Crestview with the stereo carrier but he's freakin mono)

I know.. smart ass idea.

do you mean Okaloosa County? (isn't Fort Walton in Okaloosa county, and dont you live there?!)

It's just 3 dB. Not a huge difference. It's interesting how people think power is more important than it is.

Note that WYCL is only dropping to a C0; this really ain't that big a change. In fact, they are going up higher.

This ain't no thing. And, it saves on the power bill, for sure.

Do they WANT to cover FWB? Their ID's USED to say FWB. Now it just says Pensacola, Pace, Milton.
You will have to excuse the mistakes I make. No one is perfect. Thanks for bringing that out.
Firefox has a spell checker now and that helps prevent the really stupid mistakes. Now, they need a grammar checker, too.

WABB used to ID Mobile, Pensacola, Fort Walton and Biloxi... I think they finally dropped those fringe markets.
Back in the early 80's Fort Walton didn't have many FM's, so the Mobile, Pensacola, Dothan, and Panama City stations targeted and had listeners there. Now FWB has a dominant Cumulus cluster and a dozen other FM stations... they have become their own market.
The Pensacola and Mobile markets share a tower farm so they share stations... it's kinda weird. All formats except rock are duplicated and target one city, but they also provide competition (alternatives) to the other city. WYCL was the only class C to keep their transmitter in Florida, now they are going to conform with the other stations and move to Robertsdale... no big deal for their hometown, Pensacola. Good deal for their secondary market of Mobile.
As for Pensacola/Fort Walton or Fort Walton/Pensacola stations WTKE and WKSM still claim that...

My main question is what will become of WYCL's old tower? It's too tall to become a cell phone tower, isn't it? Could WRRX or some of the Pensacola LPTV's move there?

It's a 1500-footer, though I suppose the cell guys could mount down the stick somewhere if they needed to fill a coverage hole in the Molino Metroplex. Might be too far out for LPTV--20 to 25 miles from civilization. FM possibilities would depend on co-channel & adjacency spacing. The best prospect might be WUWF--get 'em off that little stick at Tiger Point where they've always been Hurricane Bait & bring decent public radio to Mobile. CC probably owns the YCL tower, so I wouldn't look for them to allow a commercial competitor to upgrade by moving there.

As for station ID's--cities listed after the C-O-L can-and-do change at the whim of the PD, GM or corporate suit. Nothing stopping a station from something like "WABB-FM, Mobile... Pensacola, New Orleans, Montgomery, Tallahassee, Birmingham, Jacksonville, Houston, Tampa-St. Petersburg... and on a good day--New York & Los Angeles!"

Yeah, it's been done.

What happened to Kit Carson who was the PD at 107.3? Where is he now?

I think WUWF is on the WPAN tower because they are the only Pensacola station that actually targets Fort Walton and Destin. Those folks in Destin are rich and the people in Mobile are poor so it fits their demographics better.
Also, wouldn't Mobile's Christian station on 88.5 keep WUWF from moving west?

> wouldn't Mobile's Christian station on 88.5 keep WUWF from moving west?

Yup. They would also have some market exclusivity issues with WHIL.

And, as to Kit Carson... I can answer that, but, I'll leave it up to him to chime in.

Are those stations in FWB going to go HD? I think i heard that all stations must be digital by 2009 in relationship to television or is that an option?

[me=robfwb]brings this thread back to life[/me]

According to radio-locater, they have ceased their construction permit.
Good thing because I enjoy that station when the FWB market goes commercials

So, what did happen to "Kit Karson" on 1073? Is he going to say hello, or is he afraid that Sharon Walker from Tallahassee will return from the grave to get him.........?

I am also looking for Kit, so I do hope he'll say hello.
Remember the Greek girl with the REALLY BAD ATTITUDE after the death of New Rock?

It's interesting. I listen for the music.
Don't really pay attention to personalities or ads <skip>
