My AM Band (530-1700) - night & daytime...

Ok, first of all, I know there are topics dealing with specific parts of the band, but I couldn't find all the topics for the entire band (there were some parts missing in the topics, unless I searched for the wrong string - "what does your am band look like") covering the entire band, so I'm just posting my typical nighttime AM log here in one post...

My location: within 1/2 mile of the school campus that includes 32°45'40"N 116°56'50"W

Just because I may list only one station on a frequency doesn't mean others aren't audible under it - that's usually the dominant one though. Also, some, for example the 530 TIS's, require an external loop antenna.

Nighttime:

530: TIS from LAX, unID other TIS under it
540: XESURF Tijuana, BCN - local
550: KUZZ Bakersfield, CA, have occasionally heard the Phoenix station as well but haven't logged it recently
560: KSFO San Francisco, CA
570: KLAC Los Angeles, CA
580: KMJ Fresno, CA, KOGO IBOC
590: KOGO IBOC
600: KOGO San Diego, CA (local)
610: KOGO IBOC, sometimes KEAR San Francisco or KAVL Lancaster when KOGO's TX (5kW 8 miles west of me) is nulled
620: XESS Tijuana(?), BCN, under it is sometimes KTAR Phoeix, also some KOGO IBOC residue
630: KHOW Denver, sometimes KIDD (?) Monterrey, CA
640: KFI Los Angeles, CA
650: KMTI Manti, UT
660: KTNN Window Rock, AZ
670: KIRN Simi Valley, CA (several years ago KBOI Boise used to blast in here with a good signal, no trace of them now though)
680: KNBR San Francisco, CA
690: XEWW Rosarito, BCN - local
700: probably KALL Salt Lake City, UT
710: KSPN Los Angeles, CA, often a mexican underneath it
720: KDWN Las Vegas, NV. Have heard WGN once or twice in the last 10 years
730: either XEEBC Ensenada or XEX Mexico City
740: KCBS San Francisco, CA
750: mostly KFMB splatter, sometimes an unID with a talk format (but not WSB)
760: KFMB San Diego - local
770: KKOB Albuquerque, NM with KFMB splatter
780: KKOH Reno, NV, have heard WBBM once or twice in the last several years
790: KABC Los Angeles, CA, often a mexican underneath it
800: XESPN Tijuana, BCN, null XESPN and get XEROK Ciudad Juarez
810: KGO San Francisco, CA
820: XEVMS Mexicali, BCN, sometimes WBAP Ft Worth, TX
830: KLAA Orange, CA, have occasionally heard WCCO
840: KXNT North Las Vegas, NV
850: KOA Denver, CO
860: XEMO Tijuana, BCN
870: KRLA Glendale, CA, occasionally WWL New Orleans, LA
880: varies - sometimes KRVN Lexington, NE, sometimes an unID music station northwest/southeast (i've thought it was one on 880 in Mexicali but there seems to not be a record of one in operation there on that frequency), have also sometimes, IIRC, heard what sounds like IBOC hash, without an adjacent to ID it with - it's not the normal IBOC sound - it sounds like what a station may sound like if it was broadcasting only digital and no analog
890: KDXU St George, UT - this one is notable for being my first ever DX catch on a radio I got as a freebie with a bicycle - its sensitivity and selectivity were horrid - for example 1130 and 1170 bled on top of each other, 1070 and 640 were barely readable, etc, but I heard it between 860 and 910)
900: probably XEW Mexico City, but mostly splatter from KECR
910: KECR El Cajon, CA, null them (TX is north of me) and either get XEAO Mexicali or KGME Phoenix
920: mostly splatter from KECR, maybe an uniID
930: KHJ Los Angeles, CA

950: XEKAM (?) Rosarito - local
960: KKNT Phoenix, AZ
970: either KHTY Bakersfield, CA, KNWZ Coachella, CA, or something that sounds like IBOC hash without an adjacent-channel station to identify it with
980: KFWB Los Angeles, CA
990: either KTMS Santa Barbara, CA, or XECL Mexicali, BCN
1000: mix of KCEO Vista, CA, and KOMO Seattle, WA
1010: haven't ID'd much on this one, but it's not quiet
1020: KTNQ Los Angeles, CA, occasionally KCKN Roswell, NM
1030: XESDD Tijuana(?), BCN, sometimes KTWO Casper, WY

1080: unID spanish, sometimes KRLD Dallas, TX
1090: XEPRS Rosarito, BCN
1100: sometimes KFAX San Francisco, CA, probably another unID
1110: usually KDIS Pasadena, CA, sometimes mixes with a mex and/or another - not sure if I've ever positively ID'd KFAB Omaha, NE
1120: mostly splatter from KSDO
1130: KSDO San Diego, CA - local
1140: mostly splatter from KSDO
1150: usually KTLK Los Angeles, CA
1160: KSL Salt Lake City, UT
1170: KCBQ San Diego, CA - local, occasionally KLOK San Jose, CA, or KFAQ Tulsa, OK under it
1180: KERN Wasco-Greenacres, CA

1210: KPRZ San Marcos-Poway, CA
1220: not much ID'd here
1230: graveyard jungle
1240: KSON San Diego, CA - strong enough to overcome graveyard jumble, but have heard KALY Los Ranchos de Albuq, NM, under it when KSON was broadcasting an unmodulated carrier

1020: KTNQ Los Angeles, CA - very faint
1030: XESDD Puerto Nuevo, BCN - fairly strong
1040: KURS San Diego, CA - fairly strong. interesting that two stations are on adjacent channels in close proximity, but my radios seem to have little trouble separating the two, however, one of them (which separates 1030 and 1040 quite well) practically can't pull out 1110 KDIS out from under 1130 KSDO's splatter - what gives?)
1050: XED Mexicali, BCN - fringe, almost requires loop
1070: KNX Los Angeles, CA - fairly good signal
1090: XEPRS Rosarito, BCN

I was just out in your neck of the woods. The thing that struck me was just how weak KDIS actually is in the Los Angeles area. Very inadequate signal for such a vast metro area. Your nemesis - KSDO - is a blowtorch way up the coast, long after KDIS fades out. I don't know what the solution is - short of a Disney outlet in San Diego, which should be a priority for the network given the large population there. San Francisco's Disney outlet is also underpowered, not adequate for the Bay area. Perhaps if AM's woes continue, some bigger legacy signals will be ripe for takeover.

Did you ever get any opportunities to try your loops? I would think you could have gotten much better DX than I could ever hope for with my pocket radio + Select-A-Tenna combo.... a few of the best I've done so far include (all from my home QTH except where noted):
680 KNBR San Francisco, CA - late winter morning. had to null 690 XEWW Rosarito (back when they were XETRA).
700 KALL Salt Lake City, CA - early afternoon (forget time of year). DX'd from Borrego Springs, CA (about 50-60 miles northeast of San Diego), XETRA's signal was weak enough to be a relative non-contender.
810 KGO San Francisco, CA - late winter morning. had to null 800 XESPN Tijuana (this was a while ago and may have been while 800 was still XEMMM).
1530 KFBK Sacramento, CA - winter midday
1580 KMIK Tempe, AZ - winter midday, overpowering co-channel KBLA Santa Monica
Considering how congested the band is here, especially in Los Angeles, you probably wouldn't get the same daytime DX here that you get in TX, though. For example, KOA and WBAP would probably be impossible due to stations in Mexicali, KTWO would get wiped out by one near Rosarito, KKOB might be possible if you're not too close to KFMB's transmitter, but maybe the ground conductivity isn't quite as good (except on the coast, where some of the Santa Barbara graveyard signals come in like a local in beach areas of San Diego, and even sometimes overpower the rumble at night), etc...
Should I even bother trying to build one of the loops? ;) Or is so cal too congested on AM to make it worth it, especially if I'm using a radio with poor selectivity?

No - we had to fly - short notice from my daughter's agent: be on set in one day or lose the part. No room on the plane for loops and such ---

KNBR was a monster signal just north of Santa Clarita, probably one of the clearest 300+ mile daytimers I have ever heard except maybe for WBAP.

I gave familiar signals from the East a try, the band is so congested with closer signals that things like the big Chicago stations don't even have a chance. I did get KOA and KSL by nulling other things, but no WBAP, KKOB, KTWO, KRLD, or even WOAI. Interestingly, I did get hets on 531, but no trace of Turks and Caicos or Cuba, just TIS stuff. No het on 1521 either. This was on a car radio in San Francisco, about the only chance I had to DX during a three day filming break when the main star of the show had her birthday party.

The band seemed pretty packed, I don't know if a loop would help all that much. I would think nulling with a ferrite bar would do more for you. A properly functioning GE Superadio 3 (or RCA now) would be quite a help in wading through the trash, it is pretty darn selective in narrow mode and will seek out signals. I didn't have a chance to pack one - they are pretty bulky. Maybe next trip when I can drive. As long as one parent is on the set, the other parent is free to leave ---- if you can stand LA traffic!

I also noticed the original poster listed KBLU as the daytime signal on 560.  A couple of years ago, something in Spanish on 560 was doing quite a number on KLAC (570) daytime not long after I crossed into North county.  Never could figure out what it was. KBLU, on the other hand was the standard ration of basically right-wing talk (in English).

Surprised you get WIND during the day with 550 Cincy & WIND sending most of their signal north.

On a winter mid day I heard KGO, & KNBR near Laguna Beach.

1110 did have a good signal into San Diego when it was KRLA.

I also receive 560 WIND here in Cincinnati daytimes with WKRC nulled , although I do have to use a ferrite loop antenna to receive them. I can hear WIND at night also. As I recall, WIND has a fairly strong signal in central Indiana during the day.

Here in Cincinnati, the strongest Chicago day signal is 780 KHZ, the strongest of the weak day signals that is. Days I can also receive 670, 720, 890 but very weak, and 1000 on a good day. 720 is sandwiched between our locals 700WLW and 740WNOP, so you need a good radio/antenna to receive it, but it puts in a good night signal. I love listening to that Milt Rosenburg guy on WGN evenings.

Sunset skip 820, 850, 1030. 1690 booms in here for sss when on their 10KW power.

Nights, 560, 670, 720, 780, 890, 1000, we have a local on 1160, & 1690 weak but regular.

I'm using a pretty good receiver / antenna combination in order to receive the day sigs, although in winter I have received them on some small portable radios.

You get Chicago better than I thought you would. One of 850's lobes heads that way.

WLW's IBOC is clearly heard under WGN in the St. Marys, Ohio area. I don't see how you could get it daytime in Cincinnati! I hate hearing the crap hamper WLW's otherwise crisp signal.
