My Philly Predictions

P

1. 100.3 The Beat should become Praise 100.3, leaving Radio One Philly with no hiphop stations. Power & Wired will be the only hiphop stations, BTW.
2. Praise 103.9 should become a hurban station, although Radio One has flipped one of its stations to Spanish, although it's regional Mexican instead. The station is in Houston. A Radio One hurban would help, since Radio One is big on black stuff.
3. Q102 should shift to adult CHR, filling the void left by Mix.
4. Sunny 104.5 should go tropical or regional Mexican.
5. WDAS-AM should go to Air America.
Edited by PassDutch on 07/15/05 03:24 PM.

1. 100.3 will become Y-100/alternative

all other stations suck

First...you must understand by the very nature of your post...you are not making "predictions", but SUGGESTIONS. In other words...what you'd like to see happen. "WILL" indicates a prediction. "SHOULD" indicates a suggestion.
That having been said...the flaw in your suggestions can be summed up in five words. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.
Therefore...to take on each suggestion seperately:

> 1. 100.3 The Beat should become Praise 100.3, leaving Radio
> One Philly with no hiphop stations. Power & Wired will be
> the only hiphop stations, BTW.

Won't happen. Radio One took Y off the air and replaced it with The Beat to use the stronger signal to get what it believes is a more commercially viable format to more people. Pure dollars and cents. If any on these three stations will shift, given past history, it's Wired. Although with the Beasleys, you can never really tell.

> 2. Praise 103.9 should become a hurban station, although
> Radio One has flipped one of its stations to Spanish,

> Houston. A Radio One hurban would help, since Radio One is

Ditto. Radio One is seeking to target African-American listeners, for the most part, the Houston situation not withstanding, although Houston has a far larger Hispanic population than Philadelphia. Besides, 103.9 is being operated for virtually no cost, and early results are promising. There's no reason for Radio One to switch at this point. Maybe down the line. As to whether Philadelphia really "needs" a hurban, that's a matter of opinion.

> 3. Q102 should shift to adult CHR, filling the void left by
> Mix.

Clear Channel has rarely moved irrartionally. Q has been a long term success for them. Whether they should switch to a format that, at least as executed by Greater Media, did not perform well is a real risk I doubt Clear Channel is ready to take.

> 4. Sunny 104.5 should go tropical or regional Mexican.

Again, no reason for Clear Channel to panic here. They're waiting to see what WOGL does. Their numbers are respectable, and their costs are low. No change here.

> 5. WDAS-AM should go to Air America.

A heritage station that serves the African-American community...and whose signal doesn't get far out of Philadelphia...Clear Channel is not likely to do this. Look at what WHAT is doing with Al Franken and Randi Rhodes. If you're just talking "clearance" for the sake of bottom line bucks...perhaps. But I'd file this under "if it's not broke, don't fix it". It would probably take someone willing to get a frequency on the additional high end AM bandwidth to get a full time Air America affiliate. Unless the network actually catches fire. Should that happen...then suburban stations would likely be first to act before an outlet like, perhaps, WPEN might look at it. But that's pure speculation...and way in the future, if ever.

I saved the above two parts of your post for a reason.
On the one hand, it's all about the money. On the other, you say Clear Channel won't change a heritage station that serves the African American community. What if, because of the competition from Priase 103.9, WDAS-AM becomes less profitable? What wins out: Heritage service of a community or the cash?

Then, there's your phrase, referring to Air America "unless the network actually catches fire." Hmm. There are two hot formats in radio, 2004-2005: on FM it's Jack, Bob, Ben, etc. On AM it's liberal/progressive talk. As another viable, low-cost choice for secondary AM stations in a market, progressive talk has already caught on. (And liberal talk isn't just Air America. There are now several other syndicated liberal talk shows that aren't part of the Air America network.)
Just as Philadelphia was one of the last two top-ten markets in the nation to carry Rush, it will be one of the last in the top 50 to have a 24/7 liberal talker. As has been discussed on this board several times before, Philly is a very conservative market when it comes to change ... unless you're the owner of 95.7, 96.5 or 104.5.

Agreed, for the most part. However....sooner rather than later, Praise 103.9 will have to claim some victims along the way. Dinky AM's versus a clear FM? Something is gonna hafta give. But, for the most part, I find it hard to argue any of your other points.
______________

I think there is a difference - 103.9 is a contemporary gospel 'jukebox', I believe WDAS and WNAP play more or could now move to) gospel "classics" for an older demo that would still listen to AM. They also have paid preacher shows, and local long time personalities the long time listeners are loyal to. These stations can co-exist with Praise by doing gospel differently.

Nope. They took off Y100, 'cuz Radio One Philly had to get outta the white-oriented s***.

Hey, if WPEN airs the National fast pitch softball league games on the air, I think they'll beat all the Philly stations in the ratings. Let me get to the other posts...

I just wanted to give PassDutch props for being correct with his #4 prediction. While Dave Madden's post was well thought out and logical he ended up being wrong about #4. That makes me all the more impresesed with PassDutch, it's EASY to say "things will stay the same" because most of the time they do. It takes more guts to predict change and it takes talent and knowledge (and perhaps a bit of psychic ability) to correctly predict a change the way PassDutch did.

I am sick and tired of you always bashing or knocking anyone that has a positive Anglo Rock/Alternative post. [EDIT]
