My Second Omnia ONE Question

What in the world is Clipper Silk? These Omnias sure do have a lot of tricks up their sleeves...

From the Omnia one manual:

This control adjusts the texture of the main clipper when the clipper is handling significant mid and upper midrange program material such as solo electric guitar, etc. We've brought out a hidden control from the distortion-canceling algorithm to allow you to make subtle tradeoffs in how the final clipper texture sounds. Higher numbered settings (clockwise) soften (or silken) the sound of the clipping at higher frequencies, with only a slight reduction in brightness on some material. The sound of clipping low frequency material (<2Khz) is largely unaffected.

Well I think in the ONE this setting is on a scale of 0-10...I have mostly been using it at settings of around 7-9

Hey thanks again Stephanie! I have not had much time to play recently with our ONE, other than to try the Country preset, adjusted the Hi band Mixer control from -0.5 to 0.0, and I dialed out all the Phat Bass. Clipper Silk is set to 9. Still messing with it though...this thing is capable of a lot more than I can put into it right now. Nice thing is the standard presets are nice. Probably in a few months we'll have some of the folks on this board coming out with lots of their own custom presets for just about any kind of sound you'd ever want.

Whit, have you checked out the 'Processing Clips' thread? Tons of really great info there (as well as all the clips), if you have time to read through the 1000+ posts there.

Best of luck with your OmniaOne! It's a great box :)

What's not to like about Phat Bass?

Hey thanks for that advice as well. I have only scanned the Processing Clips thread before, but the last I saw there started to be a number of posts with Omnia ONE stuff. Thanks.

Still trying to figure out the whole deal with the Phat Bass. I've been an Optimod guy for so long that it's hard for me NOT to think in terms of EQ being so important in every preset. You're the second person who suggested dialing the Clipper Silk down to around 6...hopefully it will open things up a little bit on the high end as it is not very bright right now (although the super-high end, in the SSS range, is much more well-defined than with our previous processor).

Thanks as always folks and happy processing!

The Phat Bass plays games with low frequency harmonic content - which gives a fuller sound on smaller speakers when dialed in just right. it doesn't take much to get the effect.

As others have stated, dial down the Clipper Silk a bit. Lower numbers will open the highs up for you -- which is what you seem to be searching for.

Dialing down the Clipper Silk a little bit helped. There just seemed to be a little bit lacking in the upper presence region, maybe above 4 kHz, but it's slowly coming together.

Do you Omnia folks (any processor) use the Xover mix control or the Mixer controls much?

I would try a faster release time on the presence limiter, and if thats not enough, drive the high band a little harder in the mixer. But be carefull to listen to the result on a lot of material here, especially cold voice. Too much and you'll hear it start to break up in the 'sssss' region as you're simply driving more highs into the clipper, but you can add some brilliance without squashing.

Hey stace, I am probably going to go back to Cosmic instead of sticking with the Country preset. Maybe a reduction in the final clip drive on Cosmic as well. It is freakin' sweet on music...but live voice is harsh. Gotta play with the mic processors a little.

Off-topic: stace, did you ever decide what to do with your new 8500's and moving everything around?

The 8500s are up and running on More FM (Hot AC) and The Breeze (Easy). They're not being pushed hard, infact I haven't even touched them, both are running factory presets at the moment, and they sound fantastic. Voice is super smooth! I love the way Orban puts that lovely tail on the high end stuff, and seems to glide over transients as opposed to clipping them. We have no mic processing and it doesn't need it. The talent using the Unity did initally squeel about the latency, but they'll get over it, no objections from the talent that we're using the 8200.

I haven't heard the cosmic preset on the Omnia One, is it quite aggressive? When you say vocals are harsh, are the 'ssss' distorting? Or does it sound like midrange grunge?

I'll bet those stations' listeners will greatly enjoy the upgrade!

The trouble with Cosmic on the One is midrange grunge on live voice. Although I wouldn't necessarily characterize the Cosmic preset as "aggressive", it just sounds like it's got a different AGC ratio than the other 6 presets in the box.

Thanks Frank, Mark is a super guy. He's been a lot of help to us so far. I'll hit him up!

Just wanted to make another quick comment: Is it just me, or is Omnia's "Cosmic" preset a lot like Orban's "Gregg" preset?

Not to me on the Omnia 6. The cosmic is much more open compared to the majority of the Orban presets. Just watch the mod monitor needle.
