My Take On True Internet Radio Dance Stations

bamatide said:
I don't think it has been a fight. I think the dance stations are all friends with each other and talk crap. i could be wrong though

I see it all as constructive criticism and not a fight at all because deep down, when it all comes down to it, we only want the very best for dance music as a whole :). Besides I do respect Manny, Mike O, JP, Brett, Kris and anyone else running a station (terrestrial or Internet). As long as it benefits the music, keep the criticisms going and why not have that town hall meeting during the DJ Expo :)

MikeO, you can do whatever you wish to as long as no one is hurt in the process. :)

Manny, the issues to speak about haven't been decided yet because we are tossing around a couple of different scenerios but rest assured that I'll be consulting with the FMQB internet reporters as to what they wish to speak about. It's also going to be a chance for the internet programmers to meet with some very influential people that could change the game when it comes to respect from the industry at large. But more on that later on...

Tony, yes that is where we are going to do it but it will most likely not be a part of the panels that go on during the actual expo there. More likely part of the program the we (Promo Only Promotions) put on during the same time frame. That insures us that we get the players involved and are less distracted by the newbie questions that tend to come up at the Expo. Not that I'm against that, it's just that sometimes you need a discussion that is a little more advanced that Internet Radio 101.

I'd say in most cases, on the surface when it comes to the illusion of each of the radio stations being like a bunch of big living beings trying to beat eat other, it seems like everyone on each team is fighting against the other team. However, see any radio people meet and interact with each other as humans in real life outside of business, and I bet no one really has any hard feelings amongst each other. As a matter of fact, once you stop viewing and perceiving things through the "business filter", it's back to interacting on a personal level. Fake fights usually tend to happen naturally amongst people because humans are competitive by nature, but normally don't reach to a personal or more extreme level.

Thanks Tony and it was nice talking to you at AC last year and yeah most of us communicate here and there. What we need is one of those ice-breaking sessions..where the people fall backwards and everyone else catches them.... :p

Ok, I actually just took time to read most of this entire topic. I really have nothing to contribute, but just felt like saying I read it.

John,

You definitely have a point. ;D

There has to be some sort of "sit down", outside of the panel discussions, with the major Internet streaming players as well as others that can help dance music benefit from their own respective angles. And it's as Manny said, it has to be one of those ice-breaking sessions to really get the ball rolling and think what has to be done to take things to the next level.

Totally agree :)

maybe one day my station will be worthy of mentioning here. ;D. Im an exclusive net only broadcaster now,, so its fully legal.. I am still working on a website and the paper work from Sound Exchange BMI ECT.. but I pay my royaltys now like everyone else,, so you cant say that im not helping dance now.. I had no problem paying my royaltys,, they finally got back with me,, so Its a no brainer now to flip the FM Off,, its not needed now that I have a sizable online audience . I did move to 87.9 for abouty a week but turned it off and am selling equipment for a school station or a LPFM... I am still on Ustream for now,, but i may go with Loud City if i can get some help with shoutcast.. Net streaming is not something just anyone can do,, thank goodness ustream is no work at all, and gives an HQ stream.. I still plan on not following charts,, I will continue to play what I feel is quality, but I will have to track my spins to be legal I think,, but Why Wouldnt I want to track my spins so I can help certain records chart. I know im never gonna have as many listeners as Energy 98 or Fusion or B-91, but for me its cool to have 10-15 listeners. If I get up to 30 its like heaven.. I am looking into how to stream on shoutcast and find an affordable server so if anyone can help me,, PM me OK.. My new link is www.ustream.tv/channel/the-hot-fm-87-9-dance-techno1 I still need to figure out how to drop station IDs but I am not going to talk.

I am a fanatic of dance music. I love all kinds. I am also a huge fan of trying to figure out who is treating this small niche format with the respect.

For internet Radio ONLY Stations..

#1 I am going to have to say iPartyRadio is my favorite (Perfect balance - gayness, trance, house, pop)
#2 Energy 98.1 (a little too gay circuit sounding but have the best presentation
#3 1Club.fm - amazing non dance hits stations but their dance hits is pretty awful (kind of weird) - their alter trance and dj santana sets make this one of favorites. their site really sucks though
#4 DI.fm - I love this station but their channels need updating bad. Their trace channel sounds like it has not been updated in 5 years.
#5 1.fm - these guys are cool but way too euro sounding
#6 Fusion Radio - I just do not like their site. It is too dark and their streams sound very circuit

ouch.. that was painful to read. We may not have the biggest/baddest/best dance hits channel but when you add up all of our dance stations together, i would say that we crush the competition. Our Altered State, House (Miami), Electro House channels are making noise.. Also, where else can you hear the stuff that we play on our WBMX channel?

We are just 4 guys trying to do our thing man.. I can respect the fact that you don't care for our channels but we try our hardest to support the dance scene (just like mikeo, will, manny, ari, tony, perry, john parker and others - which is probably a lot more than you have done in your entire life for this scene.

You might want to check out our new site. We made a few changes.

Russ haney is back from the abyss....... Russ you have a great mainstream web site but how much of that is really dance music listeners? I mean my website has more U.S. visitors than yours. Your U.S. traffic is like #12 and mine is #1. I have more U.S listeners than you do. Does that make me better? -- no. All im saying is you shouldn't come in swinging because there are a million things I can nitpick out of your stations and vice versa.
You should come out to AC this year.

Why do you have to be so bitter all of the time? I don't know where you are getting your stats from (Alexa?) but the industry standard is ComScore and Quantcast which seems that you do not have enough traffic to be part of either one

Whatever fantasy island that you are living on.. Let me know where I can purchase a plane ticket.

"We may not have the biggest/baddest/best dance hits channel but when you add up all of our dance stations together, i would say that we crush the competition."

yeah -- I'm the one who's bitter? I wasn't attacking you, neither was mikeo or will or anyone else. It seems you're always out there to bust somebody's balls.

Quantcast!!! you've got to be kidding me. You're pitting a start-up against a company owned by Amazon. Even by quantcast standards the U.S. still isnt your #1. and you and I both know you're nowhere damn near Di.fm.
Cyprus and Peru and your main markets
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/1club.fm#trafficstats

Fusion is 113k and youre 68k... 2 channels vs....30? ever since we reformed windows media...it seems you've taken a big hit. I think YOU need a chill pill not me.

Actually, Russ wasn't speaking of them in a negative way...this is what he said:

"we try our hardest to support the dance scene (just like mikeo, will, manny, ari, tony, perry, john parker and others"

so he was giving them props...your name was included. the person he was directing the post to was bamatide. how did you miss that?

Yeah I got that part and I appreciate that and I give him props too -- it was this

"We may not have the biggest/baddest/best dance hits channel but when you add up all of our dance stations together, i would say that we crush the competition."

that was uncalled for and I'm sure others felt offended too -- intimately I am glad he is supporting dance on his web site and we've all been posting here since 2003..isn't it time we put the "im bigger than you" b.s. aside?

Ok I get it Manny.. You have the bestest radio station in the whole wide world.. Pat yourself on the back. Your Dance Hits Channel is way better than ours.. Pat yourself on the back. Your station has been nominated for Best Global Radio Station by Winter Music Conference - IDMA - Pat yourself .. umm can't quite do that yet.. maybe someday.... anyways, you have tons more listeners and traffic.. Pat yourself on the back. Your community is much bigger than ours Pat yourself on the back.. Your Amazon Stats are better than ours.. Pat yourself on the back.

Just pat yourself on the back.. You rock manny! Congrats on a job well done.... FYI - our my.1club.fm is not calculated in Amazon because those stats goto the hosting company for our social network script... so again, pat yourself on the back. Ever heard of a CNAME? The CNAME is what gets Alexa stats... which is why Alexa is irrelevant in this day and age and ComScore and Quantcast are the industry standard. ::) So basically that 47.8% (half our traffic stats) goto the hosting service we use. So double what you see on there.

It didn't offend me, as I believe I said something similar in this thread. They offer alot of formats (including dance and many sub genres)....so i would agree. Plus they keep old Chicago traditions alive. They have former Hot Mix 5 members involved. You speak of them like they are new or don't have bragging rights. Quite the contrary.

Look man.. Im not trying to say we are bigger and badder than anyone.. I personally don't care. The dude came on here and said our site sucked so I had to stick up for it. We may not have the best website in the world but for 4 average dudes.. I would say it is something that I am proud of. It may not be the best but it sure as hell is not the worst. That's all I was trying to get out of this convo.. and then you (manny) came in and wanted to start comparing apples to oranges.. In the end we are all doing a good thing.. We are sticking to what we love supporting.. and that is a declining Dance Music Genre. - Declining meaning - In Miami.. Open Format now rules the clubs (instead of EDM).. In Nightclubs across America.. Hip-Hop rules the clubs... Even Satellite radio has removed dance channels.. It is a known fact that Dance Music is on its last leg here in America and the only people who will be able to save the format are people like us who have a passion for it. In the end I am proud of all of us!
