my two cents

A while back, someone on the board brought up a question that I thought was quite interesting of which radio stations we'd love to see change their format content. Here's my two cents.
104.7 WZZK becomes 104.7 the storm, playing the biggest mix of alternative rock, without all the rap and pop music.
97.3 WNCB new country 97.3 returns to the Oldies format and becomes 97.3 the Biggy, playing all the hits that made it big from the 50's 60's and the 70's, including the disco and on up into the pop charts even through 1979.
101.7, WBEI other known as B 101.7 becomes WCTA, the Crimson Tide archive station, playing nothing but Bama football games passed and present 24 hours a day 7 days a week, wins only.
1160 WJRD becomes Lifetalk 1160, a Christian talk radio station covering issues from peer pressure, temptation and so on, as well as carries Tuscaloosa church services.
95.3 the Bear becomes Timeless Classics 95.3, playing all the old favorites like they use to play on that frequency.
94.1 wzbk becomes 94.1 the Pacaderm, playing Bama's best classic country.
wrtr 105.9 remains classic rock, but picks up Bama football broadcasts.
102.5 the bull remains country, but becomes Dixieland 102.5, Birmingham's real country variety.
106.9 the point becomes Kics 106.0, your connection to the eighties.
WYSF, Y 94.5 continues the soft rock, but drops the Christian music they are playing and picks back up on the songs they've quit playing such as Sexual Healing and Into the night. Drops John Tesh and picks up Delila.
wbhm, the classical music station becomes 90.1 the Messenger, playing southern gospel 24 hours a day, competing with wxjc.
WRAX, the x at 100.5 moves back to 107.7 and HOt 107.7 moves to 100.5 and changes its format to WJOX fm.

I am thinking this was sarcastic, but either way it is down right funny!

What do you have against the WZZK studios? Do you want to see them torched by rabid country fans? Actually, that might be amusing. . .

No such station for the Tigers? I nominate WGSY 100.1, because one less cookie-cutter Clear Channel AC station is a good thing. . .

Ooooh, can WGIB become a Pacifica O&O, too? :)

I brought up the question because I was so mad that ever since the WRAX switchover, there wasn't any good stations to listen to 24/7. WRAX, however, was started to get weaker about three or four years ago but I suppose it was all that damn Creed and Nickelback crap that they kept playing over and over. I can't pick up the other (sort of alternative) rock station Rocket 95.1 either in my home or in my car without Fun 92.7 (oldies, stuff that no one cares about) out of Arab and this local station 95.9 WTWX (more damn country)always interfers with Rocket's signal in various parts of Guntersville. That's why I stuck with The X because no other stations was interfering with their 107.7 signal. Now of course two more country stations (I serious hate country stations more than ever) 100.3 WLAY and 100.7 "US 101" out of Chattanooga interfers with The X's 100.5 signal.

Sorry for the rant, but it angers the blood when thinking about how pathetic the only rock station I can pick up clearly is that cookie-cutter, Nascar loving, way too much Aerosmith playing, 106.1 WTAK.

Have you tried 1170 WXRP in Hanceville? Real rock on a signal-free AM daytimer. Maybe you could get it in Arab/Guntersville, although I wouldn't take bets on it.

105.3 in Atlanta would be utterly impossible there, though, thanks to WQSB.

Why is WAFN 92.7 overrunning 95.1? Are you right under their tower or something? I've never even been able to DX it here.

And yes, there are way too many country stations in North and Central Alabama. That makes little sense, because you have the big heritage-laden stations (WZZK, WQSB, WLAY) that will NEVER flip and probably get more listeners in their fringe counties than those hometown stations could. You'd think more of the class A's would go rock, or CHR, or CCM, or satellite talk, or Cambodian accordion-based hip-hop . . . basically anything else.

I have tried picking up AM stations but the only ones I can pick up is 1270 WGSV and some Spanish station (I am not sure of the range)at daytime last time I check. At night I can pick up more but they are talk and more country formats.

As for the tower, that could be the major part of the problem. I do see a red skinny tower with a small box-like shed and blinking red lights on the left side of HWY 431 going south but I don't know if it's 95.9WTWX/1270WGSV's (they share the same radio studio)tower or something else. If that is their tower, then I live northwest of it and that is the reason I have problems with the 95-96 FM range. Plus on a very cheap radio Fun 92.7 and 95.9 WTWX bleeds all over the place. The 95-96 FM range is a very crappy place to have The Rocket 95.1 on it. I wish The Rocket would move to 107.7FM since WUHT's signal is so weak up here anyway. That would be awesome.

Perhaps, I should go to satellite radio or buy more alternative rock cds.

Sadly, my first job in radio was at WXRP back when it was Classic Country/Southern Gospel. With only 850 watts, and what I would bet is a very poorly maintaned ground system it doesn't get much range, but my parents could hear it on their radio at home near Arab on a good day.

I can't believe I drove 30 miles each way to work there.

Last time I was thru Cullman, it was playing Rock, but the processing was terrible. The audio was low, much below other things on the dial. They could invest in a good audio processor and make themselves much more listenable. Nothing wrong with music on AM, but you have to be prepared to put out a good clean signal.

Is it WQRX-870 in Valley Head? They have a pretty big signal.

That's the one.

Get a FM-capable tuner card for the PC. I have the cheapest, crappiest model available and it DXs way better than any stereo I've ever had using the same (outdoor) antenna.

Since Citadel owns both of the closest 107.7's (WUHT, WIVK in Knoxville), they'd probably have something to say about a strong signal being placed there in Huntsville. Looks like there would be room for one, though.

If you like alternative, XM is the way to go. XMU, Fred, Cafe, Ethel, Squizz, and Unsigned would more than satisfy your needs. I thank Citadel-Birmingham daily for leading me to make that purchasing decision. :)

WQRX-870 is a gospel station so that isn't it. I don't know what the call letters are for that Spanish station. It comes and goes during the day.

I don't think using a outdoor antenna and FM-capable tuner card for the pc will help me in sorting out 95.1 in the mist of 92.7/95.9 interfence. Huntsville stations besides WTAK and WZYP are harder to pick up than their Birmingham counterparts due to the hills and mountains surrounding the Guntersville area.

As far as I am concern, Citadel can go to hell for what they did to The X and not making that 100.5 WANZ station they acquire into "Hot 100.5". The only time I will forgive them is if they return The X to 107.7 with the old tower and old stronger signal intact (not that crappy weak WUHT signal) and takes Creed and Nickelback off their playlist.

Thanks for the tip on XM. Now, if I can save up enough money and not have my car or anything else act up then I will be set.

If they hadn't acquired WTUG in the same deal, the Lukewarm brand of Urban AC probably would have came to 100.5. But they did. Since Z-100 was also an alternative station and did well in T-Town, they moved the X there. Hey, they're on top of the mountain in market 234...until they screw up what Apex put together, too. I think they've just given up on Birmingham completely, I really do, it's the only explanation for 6 such mediocre stations. . .

Why were you so mad about the WRAX switchover. You didn't seem to mind when WENN was kicked off their 100kw signal and moved to that crappy 1.4kw 105.9. What goes around comes around!
