My WFBQ Rant

After a hiatus from local radio, the last few days I've been scrolling through the FM stations while in the car, and I've quickly remembered why I dislike WFBQ:

A) Would it kill them to have a little more variety in terms of classic rock? I think I can count on two hands the number of artists that are played on that station on a regular basis. AC/DC, Van Halen, ZZ Top, Bob Seger, well, I think that's about half of them anyway. Local classic rock radio just hasn't been same since the old 101.9 WKLU was sold!

B) Does Van Halen's Runnin' with the Devil really need to be played every three or four hours?

C) Bob & Tom. Do that many people really enjoy their lowbrow, blue collar humor? And that constant snickering into the microphone is enough to drive one insane. How they've managed to score national syndication is beyond me.

D) Oops...before we proceed to E), let's stand by for another 6 minute commercial break.

E) The whole "Q95" branding thing has always bugged me, although I say the same for any FM stations that brand themselves without providing the complete FM frequency. Sure, locals know where to find it on the radio dial, but for a station that has a number of billboards around 465 advertising "Q95", you've gotta think that many people from out of town are left playing a guessing game on their FM dial trying to figure it out. Let's see, is it 94.9...nope...maybe 95.1...nope, not that either. I know the "Q95" name goes way back, but nonetheless, kudos to the marketing geniuses at Clear Channel who decided to blow money on billboard advertising without providing the details.

That is all :)

All good points but it must be remembered that radio is designed to appeal to a mass audience. That means the lowest common denominator. The Q-95 name began in the pre-digital world of course. From a monetary standpoint (and billboards are about boosting business) nobody really cares too much about getting non-locals to listen since they won't affect ratings.

don't forget skynyrd, zeppelin, petty and guns & roses - that completes your hour.

"Q-95" goes back to the mid-70s when it was TM-automation tapes promoted as "Rock n' Stereo"...more or less "Windy 1260" Top 40 without the jocks.

Bob and Tom are obnoxious, gross and disgusting....but hey, Indiana is a bubba state anyway. CC loves the underemployed/unemployed hilljacks let go from the GM plants to listen to Rush's rants and take it all as gospel....Hitler did the same thing....he needed recruits too!

(where have I seen this movie before???? hmm...let's see here ...conspiracy theories promoted on small town stations in the 70s because they were hurting for money.....and the Indy stations were intelligent enough back then not to allow a gospel of hate disguised as "legalize Laitrille" or "Dr. King was a commie" or.... "The Vatican secretly owns NBC,ABC and CBS" and the likes thereof polluting the Hoosier airwaves)

As far as Bob and Tom go, 150 station network, national comedy tour, deal for specials with Comedy Central and daily TV show with a nationwide potential audience. We should all suck so bad......Not saying they are my cup of tea but they do something right.

Not politicizing....But, I guess many major markets are Bubba....Since "Bob & Tom" score strong with 150 plus affiliates and Mr. Limbaugh scores high in his network... Remember, the world is much bigger than my yard or anyone's front or back yard... They wouldn't be around (just like John Stewart) if the nets and they were not drawing numbers by PPM, Diaries or Nielson TV ratings and rantings...

that's the tired, uneducated, kool-aid drinking, arrogant attitude of the left.

i'm sure you're proud your party has destroyed the private sector of our economy and is trying to take the country AWAY from the people - oh yeah, Hitler did the same thing!

Rush Limbaugh and talk radio (including the more liberal leaning NPR) listeners in general tend to be much more intelligent and aware than the average American. Listening to Lady Gaga, hip-hop or country music all day doesn't tend to expand the mind. Bob & Tom are talk radio as well, albeit a different form of it. They have a good number of upscale listeners.

Kirkiefan, Just wondering? Do you take your handle from Steve Kirk
of WING in Dayton? I remember WING. WING was a really great station. I loved them.

But, other than WING, I remember a lot of this right wing stuff
being on the air in Ohio. Much more so than Indiana.

The utopians in Greek culture thought of themselves, as such.. Above the average common Greek.. Poor fools, they thought.... They sat on their high seats and it all came down on them.... And the masses do have equal standing in the individual freedoms that many wish they did not.. Keep them from breeding? Well, it can go the other way, too..... That is the same mentality that spoke against the music clad business that saved common radio in the 50's and 60's... The Big Brother wanted to force their classics view of what should be played, spoken and such and the public would just have to take it... Heaven forbid.. TO the left or right or in the middle.. Everyone has their own spin and we will keep it as that.. That's real diversity...

I am for diversity...and Yes I am a fan of (and grew up listening to) Steve Kirk. WING can be heard in parts of eastern Indiana....now "ESPN 1410."

And they are usually WRONG! Just HAVING an opinion doesn't make it CORRECT.

This is true.. Did not say they were correct.... But, corporate looks at things from the high and low ball listeners and when you have the demo, they won't change it... As much success they have had, I got tired of the humor (penis jokes bore us).....
