Myrtle Beach ratings

ref: 98.7 WNMI. The City of North Myrtle Beach Station does not have its tower in the Ocean Drive Section of North Myrtle Beach, so it does not have a 3 mile radius around Ocean Drive. Instead, the tower is located in Little River, thus giving required clearance to 98.5. Authorized power is 100 watts.

WNMI has its studios in the WNMB Building in North Myrtle Beach, and the station is operated by WNMB for the City of North Myrtle Beach. WNMI broadcasts mostly City announcements and information. A primary purpose for the station is when and if we have a hurricane or other emergency. In addition to generator power at WNMB, there is a studio for it located in the NMB City Hall in the "hurricane proof" area. An STL system links everything together.

Now, as to ratings. Arbitron defines the "Myrtle Beach" market as all of Horry and Georgetown Counties. Anyone who lives here knows these two counties are about as different as night and day. They may belong together as an ADI, but in reality there is little in common.

At our station in North Myrtle Beach, WNMB, we have a whopping 500 watts. We are directional with 60% of the signal heading north. Towers are located behind the new Barefoot Resort and MB Mall. Sitting on the very northern tip of Horry County, there is no way we could play the ratings games even if we wanted to, so we don't play. We don't fill out Arbitron info sheets or any other survey information. As far as I know, Arbitron may still think WNMB is the old WGSN. So, for both reasons, our location and our failure to participate, we don't show up in the ratings. YET, people listen. We get played at businesses. The phone rings. Requests are made. E-mails arrive every day, etc. Most of all, sales are good and clients are happy. So instead of ratings, we work on results for customers and service to our listeners and our city of license. It's an old formula, but it works. The moral of the story is you don't have to have Arbitron ratings to make money and be successful for your clients.

Finally, just FYI, and related to other posts on the board; we lease studio space to 94.9, WVCO, known as The Surf. There's no programming or business connection, other than they are our client for studio and office space, and they are a great client. Their tower is located close to the town of Loris, just off highway 9.

Enough rambling. May you all find success and continued great interest in this fascinating medium called radio.
