Myrtle Beach, SC (Radio for Vacation People)

Myrtle Beach, SC is a great place to come on vacation and to live in. Thats if you like the traffic and all, but thats mostly during the summer months. But I think Myrtle Beach radio stations can sound way better then they sound. Not much local morning shows. The two Top 40 stations Mix and Hot don't have local morning shows as does Kiss FM. I know Star 92.1 has a local morning show. Not sure who else is local. Wait WRNN the FM news station has a local morning show. But in other ways can't the music on these stations sound good and all. I know Myrtle Beach isn't a market like Charleston, SC which is only like 2 hours away. But Myrtle Beach radio can sound better. For one Myrtle Beach has three stations that sound much alike. Wave 104.1 Classic Rock, Sunny 106.5 Oldies, and The Sound 107.1 Classic Hits. All three play a lot of the same songs. We really don't need all three. Sunny can change their format and most listeners im sure will go to The Sound. And another one, 98.5 Kiss FM sounds Urban and Urban AC. Would they make up their mind already. Next Media just flip Wave 104.1 to 104.1 The Beat - CHR/Rhythmic as 98.5 Kiss FM needs some competion. But at the same time Myrtle Beach doesn't need to lose its classic rock station but The Sound can pick up on that.

Here is my idea of Myrtle Beach, SC radio:

Star 92.1 - Hot AC (as they already sound much like a Hot AC)

The Team 93.7 and 100.3 - ESPN Radio (93.9 singal no more as its to weak)

Easy 94.5 - Easy Listening

Mix 97.7 - Top 40

98.5 KISS-FM - Urban Contemporary

WRNN 99.5 - News/Talk

The Team 100.3 and 93.7 - ESPN Radio (as Hot 100 will never be better then Mix 97.7)

101.7 KZQ - Rock

K Country 103.1 - Country

Wave 104.1 - Classic Rock

104.9 The Beat - CHR/Rhythmic (sell to Next Media)

Easy 105.9 - Easy Listening

Sunny 106.5 - Adult Contemporary (would sound much like Sunny 96.9 in Charleston)

The Sound 107.1 - Classic Hits (picks up some of the oldies listeners)

Gator 107.9 - Country

Cumulus just seems to cheap. They do very little with their stations. Sunny 106.5 sounds like crap as a oldies station as does their Urban/Urban AC 98.5 KISS-FM. To bad someone wouldn't buy them like Citidel Broadcast. I doubt CBS Radio or anyone else wouldn't want to come into the market as Myrtle Beach is a small market unlike Charleston which has Clear Channel. We don't need Clear Channel in Myrtle Beach now. But what the Beach needs is some fixing up and better choices which Cumulus isn't giving the Beach. Next Media is fine with their stations as is Qantum. Your opinions...

Well, Ken, after reading your critique of the Myrtle Beach market, I am not sure whether to feel flattered or disappointed by your comments. You wrote about "radio" in the market, but you totally ignored those of us on the AM band. It does exist and there are a few broadcasters who are doing quite well there; you know, doing things we are supposed to be doing like serving a community at the same time we make some money.

I have nothing agaist the AM stations in the Myrtle Beach, SC market. I know their are a couple. All my post is going after is the FM stations.

And thanks for agreeing on Cumulus stations being cheap in Myrtle Beach. They really need to do something.

Cumulus is working on rebuilding the five stations in the market. Eventually, once some big changes are made, the stations will sound better, don't worry!

I don't know about how 106.5 "sounds", but I do know that they have consistently been beating out 97.7, Wave 104, WKZQ and WYAK for the last three survey periods in a row, persons 12+.
That's a long way from what we had when we signed it on in 1988 and the signal (with a new transmitter and new tower) wouldn't even reach Ocean Boulevard from Socastee, no matter how much we complained nothing was done about the poor signal the first two years it was on. Good to see they finally "made it".

Easy 105.9/94.5 is okay. Sometimes they have really good instrumentals. I don't like AC. I can't stand Kelli Dixon.

I wish WIQB had been able to keep their satellite standards format. I have it again back home for the first time in over 10 years. It's not as good as when WIQB dropped it, but better than what was on WOLS and WWTB, which still sounded good when both those stations still did it. Actually, I've never heard WWTB, thanks to WYAV.

Even better would be what WIOZ does. I can't pick it up beyond Bennettsville.

98.5 KISS-FM - Urban Contemporary

Cumulus too cheap?!? Nahhh

Hmm Here is my idea...

Star 92.1 - AC - Stay out of the Hot AC Format with this one..

The Team 93.9 - ESPN Radio

Easy 94.5 - Easy Listening

Surf 94.9 - Beach/ Rhythmic Oldies

Mix 97.7 - Hot AC

98.5 KISS-FM - Urban

WRNN 99.5 - News/Talk

100.3 The Edge - Rather see a New Rock Alternative than a Sports station, and see if they can try this as a rock station again. There is a bigger market for Rock that is left untapped by KZQ

101.7 KZQ - Rock but I have seen this one slip, even if its a Heritage Rocker..

K-Country 103.1 and 93.7 - Country (93.7 will fill the gap in Georgetown that the 103.1 signal doesn't hit.)

Wave 104.1 - Classic Rock

104.9 The River - CHR/Rhythmic

Easy 105.9 - Easy Listening

Sunny 106.5 -Use this op. to do more for Beach and Boogie music. There is a market for it, its just not tapped right.

107.1 The Beat - Urban and Compete with 98.5

Gator 107.9 - Country

Just some of the ideas I had.. Not sure what else would think...

There are a few in the AM Band that doesn't even need changing.
WNMB-AM has a strong following in the NMB area. The rest you really don't ever hear out of that much. Because they are either News/Talk or Gospel.

WNMB is just too much of a good thing! :)

wheres the top 40? Myrtle Beach is a big CHR town. Leaving Mix as Hot AC and killing Hot doesn't cut it.

Good Point, but the issue with Hot 100 is that its dying a slow and painful death, and Mix is doing the killing. Mix registered a 4.9 on the ratings book verses a 2.4. Whats missing!?? When I was there (2002/2003) as a producer, we were slowly but painfully gaining ground.

Reason behind why I would kill it: Weak 12,000 Watt Signal VS Strong 100,000 Watt, Can't get above a 2.6 share vs a 3.5 or better share.

Reasons why to save it: Now don't get me wrong Hot has great people behind the wheel, and I know Wally B and Jill Vonni are great people that can turn that around. Not sure about the night guy as I don't know him.. haha

So its a double edged sword there. :-\

~Stitch~

Jill Vonni is no longer at Hot 100. I understand Wally B. is pretty much going it alone.

She hasn't been there for months. I think I heard Jamie Lee doing middays.

Yeah.. They have her listed on the website..

What happend to the night guy? Brody?

I already know that Shakes (Fmr night guy) moved back to Wisconsin.
