Myspace and Jocks

I hear of jocks using a myspace account to keep in contact with listeners. How many in the D/FW area have one or use it with your listeners?

I have two pages and my kat has her own page. (Yeah, I said my KAT) :)

MySpace.com/TheMetalShop
MySpace.com/RockstarRadio

MySpace.com/RockstarTheKat

I used to use my to keep in touch with my listeners, but the company that I work for doesn't like the use of the net, and so all of us jocks had to remove all company/station reference from our myspace accounts. It was a great way for them to keep up with our remotes and appearances.

www.myspace.com/docbryce I still put all my pics and other things up there. It’s easier to keep up with than my full blown web site!

It was fun while it lasted!

HEY LOOK! Doc Bryce Everybody!! :) Glad to see all is well my friend!

Hey Doc! How's the folks in Arkansas treating you? I also read some articles in Time/Newsweek that you should be careful what you put on MY space. It has cost quite a few people their jobs regardless of occupation and prevented some from getting hired no matter how successful they are.

Hey all, Arkansas is been good. It's now been a year and I'm still alive! Ran in to some local varmits. I;ve had three rabbits, one racoon, and a snapping turtle try to size me up. It's like they know I'm from the city. Little bastards... The Rabbits I ran down with the truck. They'll eventually move out the way, the Racoon I scared off with a flash light, and the snapping turtle I mistaked for a rock. That was a close one, but thank God for Steel toe boots!

As for myspace, that really goes with anyhting you put on the net. There's been stories here as well of people that have lost their jobs cause they posted personal opinions about things that the company they worked for didn't like. That's a risk you'll have to take regardless of what site it is. look at how many people lost their jobs just cause of this site? Hey Mike! How's everything back at BAP? Like I was saying, when you have a public profile like radio or TV, you become their product and they want that product to be displayed a certain way. I on the other hand have limited my mypsace profile to only friends. I still run a risk, I just don't get political or bash anything on my myspace site. That's about the best I can do.

Hey Channing! How you doing over there? Good to see you're still in the game. Was a little worried about ya last time we talked. I'm still on the air 2pm to 7pm Monday through Friday. Getting lots of remotes, and also got to host the Miss Hawiian Tropics Model search this year. Not bad for first year out the gate in Hot Springs!

The internet can be a great tool for a station to promote itself and it can also be a killer. I noticed too that there are a lot more jocks these days going down for kiddie porn or indecency with a child these days, that's where a really bad career killer can be lurking!

Opinion here.

We know myspace is currently the "it" way to communicate & market ones self. As more lawsuits are filed against it, and as myspace further develops a reputation as THE premiere hangout for child molesters, station management & advertisers will quash further use of myspace by jocks.

Give it a year.

naaaah. Myspace won't go anywhere. What I can't fathom is WHY anyone would troll the 'net to pick up underage kids these days. Every day there is a new story about so and so gettin busted here or there. It's certainly not just myspace. Getting a person's myspace acct at the bar now is akin to getting their phone number sometimes. CC has begun a new thing with their jock pages on station websites to make them much more perosonal , interactive, and well...myspacey.

Myspace can be of use to jocks, and to stations, but the overiding problem is that it stations need to have a singular image/brand. And, while employed at a station, your image is their property. We dream of stations putting our name on billboards all over town. It's a symbiotic relationship.

Stations have caught on to the power of the web and are now building much better websites.

I created and owned DJ.NET back before stations had well built and maintained websites. And I developed a simple to use page-creator that thousands of DJ's used. This was before Myspace. There were millions of page views on those DJ pages.

Then stations began creating DJ pages and giving jocks their own station-branded email addresses. A very smart move.

The downward trend of stations sending page hits to third party sites began. That's when I sold out in 2002.

Now, I still think anyone in the public eye should have their own "dot com" with their name. But they should probably keep it fairly generic while employed.

Now why on earth would a radio station be against the internet?? Defies logic. Typical though. All about CONTROL.

Actually, hen you think about it. When you're with a station myspace is great cause of the traffic it generates, but if the jock is fired, the listeners still have contact with that jock and know where that jock is heading. There's where your control issues comes from. The jock can verbally trash the station, the listeners are still tuned in to their favorite jock, and the voice is only silenced in the conventional sense. There's your control.

A jock should always have some form of a website for the above stated reason. It is an excellent way to stay in touch with your listeners should you and your company suddenly "part ways".;)

Good point. Another point against using myspace is that while most radio stations are O&O by a large national conglomerate, myspace is owned by one as well (News Corp.). I wonder how stations owned by CC, CBS, etc feel about jocks using a tool that makes money for a media competitior?

I've heard of a number of DJs who were reprimanded for things on their myspace page. One was even fired.

As have I. Yet another reason why I feel use of myspace by jocks will decline...in a year.

Don't be surprised if CC launches a myspace-like site for jocks & listeners.

My space has also detered man college graduates from getting jobs according to some viable news sources. The myspace thing has created more misery than harmony from predators to loss of work for some. Its just another fad with a typical short life expectancy.
