NANCY ALEXANDER AND SHRINER given pink slip

I find it interesting that photos of Nancy are still in the photo gallery for the Mix Chicks slumber party and I heard her in a commercial for Ideal Image on the station today while I was getting my hair cut. It even ended with "Tell em Nancy sent ya"

Normally when a DJ is cut, it seems that all references to them get removed from the station and site. Nancy's presence is still at Mix even if she's not on air.

I always liked her sense of humor. Strong female radio personalities are rare. I hope somebody hires her. On a similiar note, are BTLS and Marin Boone the only big names fired by a major owner in this area who made it back to FM music radio in this area?

@iimutt: Maybe Ideal Image's buy specifically requested using Nancy's likeness and chances are, it expires very soon. Hey, if you hear a Geico spot on the radio, you'll still hear DC Douglas doing the tag - or at least somebody who sounds remarkably like him, anyway (he was let go after razzing the Tea Party on Dick Armey's voice mail)...

@beachbumstar et al: Sometimes, when there's a talent that popular, a few "haters" usually comes with the territory. Heck, I'd bet there's somebody somewhere that can't stand The Beatles. But I digress...

This week, I attempted to friend Nancy on Facebook and was greeted with the message, "Only request if you know her." [sarcasm]Must be that ego![/sarcasm]

I guess I don't understand why, if anything less than complimentary is said, you are labeled as being harsh or a hater. I said some very complimentary things about Nancy. I wished her well. I acknowledged her quick wit, bubbly personality and ability to entertain. I also said that, in the last few years, it appears that all of that was being over-shadowed by constant pursuit of praise and assurance. That is not entertaining. And saying that doesn't make me harsh or a hater ... it just explains why I turned the dial ... and why others probably also turned the dial ... and why ratings may have dropped and why the show may have been canned.

Yes, they are both talented. Which brings me to another point. "Nancy's contract" didn't get renewed so Shriner got fired too? How exactly does that work? I didn't see their show incorporated as its own business entity ... so, they would each have individual contracts, right? Or ... the show got canned.

Maybe Shriner was making too much and they can just VT in somebody out of town or use Premier. CC got rid of Adam Stubbs from WTVR Lite 98 in Richmond. He was there for at least a decade. Now they VT in somebody and there was nothing controversial at all about Adam on the air.

Some of the comments have been harsh, but the fact is that just about anyone who gains a top spot in a big market has some enemies. It's the nature of the business. Nancy is a big time talent and I hope she'll find a way to reinvent herself and put that talent to good use. Unfortunately what happened to her is nothing more than a reflection of the business model: CC decided they could get a better return on investment by getting rid of her and Kirt. It's not personal, just cold, calculating business. The old caution that we can all be replaced has never been more true.

By the way... Nothing about Nancy's exit in today's TRI. The ouster of 32-year veteran JD Cannon in Indianapolis got a blurb, meanwhile.
Nancy Alexander's contract not being renewed is in fact in today's Tom Taylor's TRI column, toward the end of the column (The NAB convention in Las Vegas was the big story). There is a link in today's TRI, but the link gives an error message.

At any rate, it's an unfortunate situation on many different levels; for Nancy (obviously), her family and her listeners. She had been a media fixture for many years in the Tampa/St. Petersburg metro.

Here is what should be the link (I hope it works!) for those who haven't read it:

That's the bottom line to all of this. When CC unloaded over 1800 employees back in early 2009, it became clear that anyone employed by CC could be cut, except for maybe Ryan Seacrest. It's absolutely terrible. But I can't believe someone as intelligent as Nancy would be "shocked" about this. The reality is that most people in all walks of media today are not safe in their jobs no matter how many years they've been in one place. I also wish her the best.

By the way, I wonder if this move will trigger a format flip? Just a thought.

It says that "Mike Klein" is on-air now. When I click on the info button, no add'l info pops up.

The website now lists him as the 3p-7p DJ. Man, I must say, he is the least enthusiastic DJ I've heard in a long time. Looks like they've jettisoned any semblance of personality from the station at this point.

I'm sorry to hear 2 very nice people have lost jobs that I truly believe they loved. First, I don't understand the nasty comments on this post regarding Nancy. I worked with her in the past ( I was in sales ) and she was very professional and easy to work with in my opinion. I have worked in radio for almost 20 years and have come across alot of on-air "egos" like passing a dj in the hallway and they do not even speak to you or make eye contact but not Nancy, she always had a kind smile and always would ask me how I was doing. Very nice gal and regarding her show that it was all about HER, yeah thats usually how a show goes its around the personality, its how radio shows work, they are selling themselves (til the past 10 yrs plugging in no personality, generic shows )....

As for Shriner, nice guy as well. Good luck to you both and hope you both land on your feet.

We all know who you are. Eventhough you "worked" with her, you really didn't deal that much with her.

Now they almost sound like 98.7. If the idea was to jettison personality and be music intensive, they did it. I guess it's cheaper.

Id like to see her on the Point...give that station some personality !

Replace Corey Dylan with Nancy. That is a good idea given I can't stand Dylan. Ever talk on her show. She can be very rude and obnoxious. Joe Elliot and Reins from 97X aren't bad though.

Can't decide what's worse: the fact that 1800 folks' jobs were gone, or one of Ryan's 1800 jobs is secure!

Nancy's nobody's fool, but I think that denial is something that can creep into everyone's mindset, again that's not a rip, just an observation. I remember Cleveland Wheeler admitting he never thought it would happen to him and Skip Mahaffey making the same kind of admission. That loss of perspective is something that can happen to anyone, but then again it's like combat: everyone knows intellectually what can happen, but you always hear soldiers saying they convinced themselves that bad things would never happen to them. Jeez, if we were all realistic about this business, especially given today's state of the industry would any of us ever get behind a microphone or control board?

Mike, as usual, makes valid points. We've all lost great gigs and/or jobs we loved and thought would never end. After losing my best gig a wise mentor said there is only one way to look at the situation. "You had a great run".

Nancy in the Morning was the only radio show worth listening to, ever, in Tampa Bay (with the possible exception of Chris Thomas). Her dismissal has NOTHING to do with ratings- if you think that's why she, and thousands of other CC employees were axed, you aren't aware of the BILLIONS of dollars in ultra-expensive debt that Bain Capital got stuck with when they unenthusiastically (even tried to sue their way out of it) bought into one of the fastest dying industries on the planet. The medium is unsustainable in its present form, and attempts to reinvent it have been idiotic. Corporate owners have progressively eliminated most of the things that actually made radio WORK as a medium.

I always found Nancy hilarious, witty, and worth listening to. Long live Danger Blonde, and the Wall of Teeth!
