NASCAR now on the FM dial in Pittsburgh

They are micromanaging the on track product to death.

Forgive my ingnorance, but aren't we kinda micromanaging the move with this thread? Krock is going talk and needs weekend programming for their regular weekday programming, so why not NASCAR.

I mean, we're talking about a Sunday afternoon (sometimes Saturday night) program which is basically just filler for the weekend. I find it hard to believe that any advertiser is breaking down the doors to buy time for that timeshot (with the exception of the Steelers here in Pittsburgh), so any extra money that CBS brings in with NASCAR is just gravy.

...or am I missing the point...

You're missing it a little bit. Something like NASCAR is programming that will make people who are NASCAR fans go out of their way to deliberately tune in your station. People who might never otherwise turn their radio to your frequency might even dedicate a pre-set button on their car radio to you. In between the paid commercials, you have a golden opportunity to promote what you broadcast the rest of the week to those listeners who'd never sample your station otherwise.

That's a great potential opportunity to recruit new weekday listeners.

Well put, Realist. It's a shame how many stations don't promote their other offerings during special programming. Unless everyone suddenly sold their inventories out, which is highly doubtful.

That's a great point; one that I obviously didn't think of.

Thanks for setting me straight!

cars going around in a circle on radio...just as exciting as the steelers on radio...its what you listen to if your running to giant eagle for the wife...when you get back home, you watch it on tv...IF YOU CARE ABOUT NASCAR!...or the steelers...

when you get back home, you watch it on tv.

I can't address NASCAR on this issue, but the truth is that I often do turn down the sound on the television and watch Steeler games on television accompanied by the words of Hillgrove and Ilkin. I don't think I'm the only one in Pittsburgh who does that.

I tend to doubt that NASCAR lends itself to such treatment.

Well, as I said earlier, the breaks are different.

Any feedback on how many Pens fans are turning down the TV sound to listen to Mike Lange?

You're not, Realist. In fact, that's how most stations I've worked for have marketed the Steelers. But you're right...that doesn't happen with NASCAR.

The NASCAR talk shows ("Fast Talk", "NASCAR Live", "NASCAR Performance Live", and the "Alltel Pit Reporters") have actually proven to be bigger moneymakers than the races themselves.

Yep, have been doing it all season with Pens games. The radio broadcast is in sinc with the cable feed (nobody in the arena is listening, trust me). If you have a dish that is in sinc with the Sirius/NHL feed. Nothing against Steigy, but Mike has found his groove again.
