NASCAR off WSOC-FM?

Hmmm - latest book shows a BIG drop for WSOC on Sunday afternoons.

Just sayin'...

This is not surprising to me at all, and I bet there is also a drop in revenue there.

However, I would not look for either of these revelations to make any changes based on the statements made earlier in this thread that certain members of management wanted NASCAR off the station and didn't care what the effects might be.

Sure hate to see no NASCAR affiliate in Charlotte. It's getting harder to find NASCAR on anywhere with a good signal. Same is true around WNC with racing, the Tarheels, the Panthers, and no chance of hearing the Bobcats. I wonder if many smaller stations are unwilling or unable to staff a board op for the occasional 3 or 4 hours.

I'm hoping the Daytona 500 works for WBT. Maybe they will put the rest of the Sprint Cup schedule on 99.3. Better than nothing!

And just a thought. 99.7. Why not the flagship of John Boy and Billy being a good fit for the Charlotte flagship of NASCAR?

NASCAR and the Bobcats are automated. I'd assume most major college programs and the Panthers can be automated as well.

I have a friend who owns a small station and he tells me the automation is, in his opinion, not dependable enough for his comfort. I have no way of knowing whether the problem is with the source or his own equipment and fears.

Maybe I am wrong (I have been many times) but it seems with all the competition for listeners these days from other stations, satellite, ipods, etc., a local station serving up a special program, like sports, that will rope in some specific listeners for a period of time is better than just being another juke box on a radio dial full of them.

I am not sure about now, but MRN was one of the last sport networks that wanted a live operator to run the board so if there was any issue IE Rain delays and such that would throw things off base... The only station up here where I live that still carries MRN races still uses good old fashioned carts and they are live with the broadcast, but the way this little station here in Rockford runs I am sure automation would be a bad thing... The Panthers English and Spanish offer Netques via Citadel Media. MRN and PRN also offer contact closures including closures for Rain Delays.

I talked to an affiliate for one of the Networks I look after a number of years ago who did not like that we used sub-audible tones for automation. He was in East St Louis I remember. He told me that he was sure that most of our stations were in smaller markets and the tones worked okay for them but his station was big time and required contact closures. I told him that most of our stations were big market stations that deemed our programming important enough to have an operator on duty...I never heard from him again...

In my opinion it appears you have an "anger problem". For your sake I hope the upcoming Obama Health Plan will contain the proper coverage to enable you to function in polite society.

Was announced this morning that the PRN Sprint Cup races will air on 99.7 WRFX.

PRN Nationwide races and MRN Nationwide and Sprint Cup races will air on WZGV 730AM.

So The Fox won't be carrying the All-Star race right in their own back yard?

The Raleigh board is grousing about NASCAR moving from WQDR to WPTF.

Here's why: AM station = crappy signal, especially at night... Also, with the switch, nobody covered the Gatorade Duels, a problem we didn't have when QDR aired the races. PTF aired their regular programming while the Duels were on, and the next closest station that did air the Duels was a rimshot FM signal out of Roxboro.

MRN apparently hasn't yet updated their affiliate listings, if they're still showing WQDR as the Raleigh affiliate. WQDR-AM (Country Legends 570) currently airs the NASCAR Nationwide Series races, while the Cup races, previously aired on WQDR-FM, now air on WPTF. The Roxboro rimshot airs the races from all three national series (Cup, Nationwide, and Trucks).
