Nash FM

With Cumulus signing on Nash FM in NYC, do you think they will add this format to Columbia? With Cumulus already having the format in Charleston (Wolf), Florence (Wheelz), and Myrtle Beach (Coyote); is Columbia next?

If I were 'COS, I'd hope so. They've basically tanked the format in Myrtle and Florence, sinking fasts in Charleston, and have proven that, at least in small and medium markets, they have no clue how to run a country station - much less most other formats.

Well, listening to Nash fm, so far they sound great. Also, as it appears, this will start a national brand for Cumulus (The Nash FM name). If I were Cumulus, move B106 to 103.1 and 106.7 NashFM would be real competition for COS.

Interesting.
Probably wouldn't flip WTCB - 100k AC still generates solid revenue despite the numbers
Probably wouldn't flip WNKT - unless they lose the rights to Gamecock sports (not likely)
WOMG ? They seem to be getting better numbers since the music change
WLXC ? Maybe. They've always seemed lost in the urban shuffle. Joyner just doesn't draw like Steve Harvey does.

But, in the end, would it matter?
WCOS has beaten every one else who's tried.

So far - Nash sounds totally automated. In NYC no less! Shame.

Stations usually are right out of the gate.

You are right Gordon. But if anybody wants to seriously take on the powerhouse at 97.5, they as well should have a monster signal. No offense to 94.3, but they can't match 97.5 signal wise.

Gordon, WCOS hasn't "beaten" anyone else who has tried. They've OUTLASTED them. The last well-programmed competitor they had, Capstar bought (WHKZ/Kicks 96). Everyone else has been part of a gang that can't shoot straight, particularly the cursed 92.1 frequency.

A lot of people bag on Cumulus, but when they put their mind to it, they create very well-researched and programmed but perhaps unexciting stations. Clear Channel does the same. But let's give them some credit for keeping live bodies in most dayparts for most of their stations. Compare and contrast WNOK, which is a repeater from Charlotte. Even their local afternoon guy is not live. He's voicetracked. They are forbidden to go live on the air.

Wow, Kicks 96 brought back memories Steve, lol. That station was great. I remember tuning in one evening hearing a Monica song followed by a Lite 96.7 id.

Only a beating if they had a chance to succeed in the first place. 94.3 BTW is the winner in the Park Street cluster., which ain't saying much.

92.1 should have STAYED country IMHO. But nevertheless, 94.3 Carolina Country started out as traditional country, and has moved in a more mainstream direction.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with Dudefans earlier post about WCOS outlasting their direct competitors.
But I also think there's money to be made in the country format in Columbia - if you have the money to wait.

I'll always believe that Kicks could've been a strong player in this market had they just hung in there a little longer

Looks like Nash FM is going national, so I guess 96.9 in Charleston and 106.5 in Myrtle will get the branding. Cumulus/Citadel have been trying for so long with country in Charleston.

Kicks and WCOS were sister stations when the format change to Lite 96 was made.

Correct. IIRC, The Kicks/WCOS combo was the first duopoly in the Columbia market after the rules were altered in 1994 where one company (Benchmark in this case) could own 2 AMs and 2 FMs in a single market. The only reason Kicks survived was that it was used to protect WCOS from someone else going Country. Country was still hot at that point and a format flip of Kicks would had possibly led someone else to take on WCOS. When Benchmark sold their stations to Capstar in 1998, Kicks had, by that point, experienced enough audience erosion to warrant a format change.
