Nashville's Glory Days

Many of you on here probably don't remember John R. when WLAC was old time R & B at night. I barely do, but I do rememeber when he retired in 1973. Bill "Hossman" Allen, Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Spider Harrison were a few anothers. Spider Harrison and I stay in touch with each other and he's living out in L.A.

I knew the minute this subject was brought up and posted all I was goning to see was Scott Shannnon, Coyote McCloud, etc. Old MAK/KDA/KDF jocks that I'm so sick of hearing about.

Real radio was on WLAC with John R., Hossman, etc. Back then WMAK only had 5 KW, Directional Southwest at night. Thier night signal was (and today as WNQM) was terrible! WLAC had (and still does today) 50 KW, Directional at night, but can be heard in nearly 30 states.

Cy Young, Bill Berlin, Alan Dennis, Dennis John Cahill, Billy Dee, Big Wally, Steve McCoy and Bumper Morgan...shows my age...I guess
these guys were around as the glory days began to change...most of these were around in the late 70's to mid-80's
(spelling and name recognition subject to the effects of old age and over consumtion through the years.)

Oh, and of course Chris Romer :D

"Glory Days", huh? Okay, let me throw some names in with you. Bill Berlin is a must, Cy Young, Carl P (in his prime), "Mr. Smooth" Jim Kent...how did we miss Ralph Emery? What about Stu Evans, Scooter Davis, or the best overall this city may have ever seen, Bruce Sherman? News-wise, I miss Dave Miller and Buddy Sadler and I really miss Jay Franklin (or whatever his real name might be 8))

And for dry wit, NO ONE competes with Chris Romer, even when "Sammy" screwed things up!

You can hear Jay Franklin now I think. He is Jim Escue and is doing traffic reports.

You have to include Super Shan and the Coyote for favorites in this city. They are a part of the history. There are so many who don't even get mentioned...or remembered.
Many of you don't remember Steve Lundy. Did PM on KDA and went on to WLS.
Add Hugh Jarrett to the group and WLAC. He worked at WHIN in Gallatin as did the Hoss Man, and also sang with the Jordainaires and Elvis. He finished his career in Atlanta and still lives there.
I would add Jay Thomas, and what about David ----- Tower and Alan Dennis. And while many of the group are gone, the late Grant Turner, T-Tommy Curtrer, Ernie Keller who boomed out on WSM bring back memories. And Gaylord can't seem to run off Hairl Hensley -- who by the way was one of the early voices in Nashville radio with WKDA/WMAK and WLAC. He and Romer would run a close race in wit and humor.
You're right on with Romer and dry wit. My desk is next to his and he keeps the days fun, (and that's when he's in a bad mood) and I 'm still not sure when he's joking.

By the way, Jim Escue has been doing news on wsm am recently in the afternoon. Now those are pipes.

Gotta agree with Allen Dennis, Jay Thomas, Bill Berlin, and John R. Also, Audie Ashworth, Russ Spooner, Dick Buckley, and even Captain Midnight (albeit only from Midnight -6 I thought he was horrible on any other shift).

Has anyone mentioned Bob Cole? Cole's time on radio free 103.3 was only a blip in time, but his classic radio free Nashvile is indeed classic.

Speaking of Cole, I think he cut out from 103.3 after the station learned that they could sell more radio time to advertisers by playing more Neil Diamind records and less Quicksilver Messenger Service records.

Anyway another classic name in radio was Noel Ball. I was just a kid at that time of Noel Ball's stint at WMAK, but I always thought he sounded like Arthur Godfrey. Bill Berlin the "Wild Child" was another radio favorite.

Jim Eskew is with Metro Networks and yes, it is a pleasure to hear his golden tones once again grace our local airwaves.

Jim Kent and Hossman were legends. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kent when I first came to town and had the privilege of working with Hoss.

In my time here, I'd have to say the best news voice I've heard is that of Paul Randall Dickerson, now with the Associated Press. He has been a friend and mentor and I'm fortunate to have worked with him.

I'm kind of partial to the power jocks that came through town, from Cleveland Wheeler to Jim Zippo to Marc Chase, and many others. They weren't the guys that I'd consider "Nashville," but I really miss their style from local radio.

I was pretty young THEN, but am I correct that it was Dick Kent at 15LAC in the mid-70's++? Jetfli --- on your line of powerjocks what about Chuck Britton?

There was also a weird, but hilarious, short termer at KDF that used to always pretend to make huge mistakes like skipping through albums,
breaking the mic, falling and hurting himself and screwing up traffic and callers, etc. Anyone remember who that was?

There was an afternoon drive time DJ at 103 KDF back around 1989 and 1990 named "Slats" that was kind of a crazy character. Is that the guy? He was not around long . If I remember correctly, I seem to remember his leaving for 96 Rock Atlanta.

The Glory Days? Has to be the mid to late 70's when WMAK ruled!
6-9a Russ Spooner and his "Spoonerisms"
9a-12 John Young aka John St. John went on to KILT and now a great vo person
12-3 Jim Cooper, aka Cooper Sly who started Tapscan
3-6p Scott Shannon as PD
6p-9p Coyote McCloud-still kicking after all these years.
9p-12a Dick Downes

I think I got the schedule right, but Dick Kent was in there before he went to WLAC as well.
The station had personality, excitment and every high school kid had it on their radio.

Nancy Solinski was the receptionist in the building on Church street across from Printer's Alley, where every morning after his shift, you could find Spooner there thru the afternoon.
