Nassau Radiothon with NH Stations

I have met Lou Mercatanti, once, shortly after he bought the stations I worked for but never saw him again for the two and half years I worked for Nassau. He seemed like a nice enough guy but I know I'm not the only one who thought he was content to run Nassau through intermediaries.

OTOH Bruce Danziger was a semi-regular visitor and I had several chances to speak with him directly.

It's great that Nassau has chosen to do this radiothon but that doesn't change my opinion that they are not vitally connected to the communities they are supposed to serve.

Congratulations to Nassau for their works in helping raise money for Haiti. Well Done!

Weekend Warrior: I'll give proper credit to groups that operate in the interest of thier listeners, community, staff and brand. Nassau has done nothing but destroy their brands, ties to their community, and destroyed their staffs to the point of cutting it to the bone all in an attempt to satisfy their debt and stock holders. I also sing the paises of groups like Saga, Northeast, Greater Media, Jeff Shapiro's group and others that IMHO do it right. WW stop the cheerleading, take off your rose colored glasses and join us in the real world.

Just being a listener, this isn't the situation in Portland.Saga seems to be the one that has cut staff the most in this market.Cody Allen,Billy Bush & Tom Kent on evenings on their three music stations.Rick Dees,Joe Cortez etc-.WCLZ don't know.
To the average listener Nassau stations are local almost around the clock, even part-timers on weekends.Except for John Tesh Citadel also sounds local. As for brands I think Frank & Wolf are known by most anyone on the street. The three big owners in Portland all have strong ties to the community.Nassau & Citadel both sound remarkably well considering the economy.Saga just has too much satelite for me.
What market are you talking about splicer38?

I must say the Nassau group in Maine must be run much differently than Nassau in other markets... It seems a few times a year they are active with major multi-day fundraisers for the Maine Med Childrens Hospital, Make a Wish, and other LOCAL causes as needed. (Remember the Bill and Heidi home heat-a-thon?) And not that Frank FM is perfect (or any station in this market), but how could Nassau destroy a brand that they created? One that's been one of the most talked about and successful in the Portland market for the last half-decade?

Of course, this is still the company that put Bud Sawyer out to pasture... but then again nobody's perfect!

Cheers,
OldPort Wino

ADBuyer1: Hey! Who you callin' OLD?

Seriously, please elaborate on your comment about my knowledge base. Wondering what drew you to that conclusion. I'm not even close to that area but have a strong affinity for New England and especially NH Radio.

I think NH has some good local operators... as do other areas of the country. I also think the consolidators nationally have gone a long way in destroying an industry I love. One that I am no longer in but hate seeing what happens from the outside. A lot of my friends have been hurt by what has happened and I hate that.

The Saga's, Bonneville's, Hall Radio, Jeff Shapiro's, Jeff Fisher's, Greater Media's, Entercom's and CBS' of the world are few and far between in today's radio world. Too many Cummuulus', Citadel's, Nassau's and Clear Channel's to make up the difference. I hope things change for the better and Radio makes a huge comback. If it does the ones that helped destroy it have to go. Just my opinion.

So speaking of Jeff Shapiro...we need to start a not so new topic, again.

The sale arrangement with Nassau.

They went to court about 102.3, and that's done. Folks I know with both companies are perparing for the "move" to Hooksett (and from Hooksett).

What are they waiting for NOW?

Probably Square One..starting over, with whatever arrangements they need to work out to make the deal happen.

Does seem to be a llllooooonnng haul here.

Splicer38...

I have worked for the small operators like the Jeff Shapiro's of the world and got screwed for many years by barely making minimum wage. Remember, it was those small local operators who sold their stations for enormous amounts of money to the Clear Channel's of the world.

Thoughts on freshing up the loops?

That's funny, I thought that's what they already said. ;D

I think its all about the move. FNQ is still in Hooksett. Until its out Mr. Shapiro can't move in and thus no transfer. Wait... maybe they are waiting to do all three at once and save on the paperwork. There still has been no official notification of sale of 102.3 right? Anyway, from what I have heard the deal is solid and it's just a matter of time.
