Natalie Grant's "Held"

S

Curb first released "Held" by Natalie Grant in January of this year. In fact, they kind of cut short their promotion of "Live For Today," which I thought deserved a little more time, in the process. "Held" didn't catch fire right away, though. My station added it back in January, played it for a good long time, then put it out to pasture. But the onset of Katrina et. al. brought the song a lot more airplay nationwide. Now here on the verge of November, many stations still have "Held" in a current rotation. I'm pretty sure the song is no longer charting (at least on R&R) because it had been on the chart too long, not because of a lack of airplay. It would be an interesting thing to see how the song would be charting now. I don't think it ever achieved number one status, but with its incredible longevity, might this really be the #1 song of 2005?

Thoughts?

I haven't done any reserach mind you...

But for us, it was definitley the stand out song of the year.

Most requested of any song this year.

With the rules of various charts designed to benefit the labels' desire to be continuously pushing new product, it's better to think of the charts as "for entertainment purposes only" and look at actual monitored airplay.

Here are the twenty most-played songs year-to-date:

JEREMY CAMP Take You Back
CHRIS TOMLIN Holy Is The Lord
CASTING CROWNS Voice Of Truth
BEBO NORMAN Nothing Without You
SALVADOR Heaven
CHRIS TOMLIN Indescribable
NATALIE GRANT Held
JOY WILLIAMS Hide
MERCYME Homesick
TREE63 Blessed Be Your Name
NICHOLE NORDEMAN Brave
MERCYME In The Blink Of An Eye
BIG DADDY WEAVE/BARLOW GIRL You're Worthy Of My Praise
MATTHEW WEST More
MARK SCHULTZ He Will Carry Me
JADON LAVIK What If
CASTING CROWNS Who Am I
PHILLIPS, CRAIG & DEAN You Are God Alone
BY THE TREE Beautiful One
STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN Much Of You

Now, of course, there's going to be a bias toward the songs that have been out the longest and have had ongoing recurrent play following their presumably successful "chart runs."

Our most talked about song this year included Natalie Grant...BUT it was, "When God Made You" from Newsong and Natalie.
Edited by toddohio on 10/28/05 02:25 PM.

UGH... I got SO sick of that song.

It's a good song (I even sang it at a vow renewal ceremony this year), but I heard it so much early this year that I started twisting the lyrics every time I heard it... Think about it... "I wonder what God was thinking when He created you." Put the emphasis in the right place and it completely changes the meaning! :)

Well, one of the big two, of course!

(I didn't know what issues would be involved if I cited it or included any data.)

We didn't add that. But it IS a great tune.

held seems to be the butterfly kisses of 2005..to sappy for me..but most people ..especially women..love it..it will probably never go away..

The song never even blipped on my radar until after the Katrina disaster. Suddenly, the words in it grabbed me by the ears and spoke to my heart.

Then someone created a beautiful, touching "remix" using some of the audio clips from the news... like the one with the man saying he couldn't hold on to his wife, and she said "Take care of the kids!" as she floated away... I remember seeing that on TV, and feeling his anguish as he told the story to the weeping reporter. That's gut-wrenching, and it's real. This song touches that.

The line in the song about Providence taking a child from it's mothers arms is appaling... and "who told us we'd be rescued?"

The song just suddenly found a place because now, all of a sudden, those obscure lyrics actually NAILED the feelings/experiences of a Nation that was dealing with it's worst natural diaster...

Just my 2c worth. :)

Willie...
