NBC airing Macy's Parade Twice

I just checked the schedule for NBC on Thanksgiving Day, and it would appear that they are airing a repeat of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in the afternoon on Thanksgiving Day from 2-5pm. What is the point of this? I thought they usually aired Miracle on 34th Street.

KTLA in Los Angeles airs the Rose Parade four times in a row on New Year's Day. The first run is typically live and no commercials.

Officially I suspect that the reason is 'So those who missed it ...' but more likely to double the commercial load for the same program. If the basic cable channels can do it ... :)

Does NBC still insist that all stations air it (the first run) from 9 AM-12 PM?

So if you're not on the east coast, it's not live.

I haven't checked recently, but I recall it rUnning 8-11 in Central Time - only 1 hour of Today (or a today starting at 6am CT in some smaller markets on that one day).

That airing of Miracle on 34th Street has been around since dirt. It's sad that tradition is over...

Are you sure about that? Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me, but I thought they only started airing it sometime after they got the rights to It's a Wonderful Life, in the late '90s or even the early 2000s.

When I was a kid, Miracle on 34th Street was syndicated to local stations, though only the colorized version.

In Macy's latest commercials, they have taken Edmund Gwenn out of the film and are having him interact with Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, et al.

This looks like it is asking local stations to pre-empt the second airing, which honestly wouldn't bother me this time around. The second airing really doesn't make much sense to me.

some places pre-empt it with a local Thanksgiving Parade

The more I've thought about this if the second airing is pre-empted for a local parade or special that's OK. But if they pre-empt it and do nothing but show infomercials I'd rather see them air the Macy's parade again. ::)

looks like KSHB is showing their regular daytime afternoon programming after the taped dog show(probably reruns of The Doctors and Jeff Probst)

Same story in Seattle. "Live" parade at 9, then O'Hurley and the Dogs for lunch, then the usual afternoon talkers. No parade replay here - at present. Checking the affiliate sites for Portland and Tri-Cities (Pasco), the Parade replay is set to air.

However, if the Detroit folks (WDIV) are smart they'll take up the network on this one. Macy*s isn't even scheduled to be seen there thanks to "America's Thanksgiving (Day) Parade" that, internet notwithstanding, the rest of civilization only gets to see one hour of - if that.

Re Macy*s preemptions, in 1985 WMAR-2 Baltimore (then NBC, now ABC) nixed Macy*s to a HS FB game from Memorial Stadium (prob. City College of Baltimore vs. Baltimore Polytechnic). I watched Macy*s that year on WRC.

BTW City/Poly followed by Loyola/Calvert Hall (yes, a HS FB DH) was a Memorial Stadium Thanksgiving tradition for many years.

Guesses:
1) Won't their be a Lions or Cowboys NFL game that will be on at this time? Cheap counter-programming on a day that won't have much purposeful TV watching.
2) West Coasters might not have seen one of (if not THE) most well-known Turkey Day celebrations
3) Because of number #2, NBC profits twice

Watch CBS replay their own Thanksgiving parade next.

CBS has the NFL game from Detroit on Thanksgiving afternoons, and as long as they have it a repeat of the parade probably won't happen. Also, in recent years they have been running the Macy's parade in New York as well, but from Times Square and just call it the Thanksgiving day parade. I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that NBC has the exclusive rights to use the Macy's name.

That made me think I wonder if there are any Macy's ads on the CBS parade.  :D
