NBC SNF Costas controversy

The Voice of Reason said:
In his remarks Bob Costas claimed the murder would not have taken place had there been no gun involved. Perhaps Mr. Costas forgot that the football player could have stabbed or beaten his girlfriend to death and could have easily taken his own life by shoving knife into his heart or by other methods.

No, Costas did NOT say that. What he said, exactly, was that "had there not been a gun involved <the two parties> might still be alive".

What he meant by that was that the use of a firearm is virtually deadly. The act of killing someone by other, manual, means gives pause to the would-be killer to think about what he/she is doing.

As always with this kind of issue, we've quickly split the discussion between Costas' comments, and the issue of gun control.

As for the comments, I thought it was an odd place for a political editorial, but I don't think it's worth organizing a boycott. A guy on TV gave his opinion. Eh. We seem to be losing the ability to just ignore people we disagree with without calling for some kind of sanction against them.

An action results in a discussion about consequences. That's the template here.

Football players crash into each other, causing permanent bodily damage. Brain damage. Paralysis. That results in discussion about changing regulations having to do with the kinds of hitting that takes place on the field.

The only thing different here is a football player killed someone with a gun. Other than that, it's the same kind of discussion in the same forum.

I agree.

Today, with 20 kids dead, it makes what Costas said two weeks ago even more poignant.

I was thinking the same thing earlier today. Call it politicizing an issue if you want, but there are probably 40 parents in Connecticut today that wish we had "politicized" this issue earlier.
